A Free-Range Christmas

October 23rd 2009 02:25
The Song Company
A Free-Range Christmas
Sunday 29 November at 3pm

More and more, music lovers are discovering the delights of the Song Company. And if they’re not, they should be…The musicality of the songs and their arrangements, as well as the choice of repertoire itself, is exceptional – something the Song Company is renowned for. But also significant in this concert is a focus on simple, old-fashioned storytelling…The performers themselves have good, sometimes beautiful voices and deliver the repertoire with charisma and humour. Never boring, this concert is a celebration of Christmas, of story-telling and of faultless music.

State of the Arts, December 2005

In celebration of the festive season, Big Notes presents The Song Company’s A Free-Range Christmas. This Christmas celebration for all creatures great and small is playing at Riverside Theatres on Sunday 29 November 2009 for one performance only.

This reprise of the very popular Christmas show, A Free-Range Christmas, by the ‘un-embarrassable’ Song Company stars Clive Birch, Mark Donnelly and Richard Black.

A Free-Range Christmasutilises old fashioned story telling with a modern twist. It is a humourous family friendly performance featuring serious and beautiful music. In A Free-Range Christmas, The Song Company is let loose in a menagerie of animals from around the world, domestic or wild, alive or extinct, big and furry or small and slimy. Wolves, oxen, cats and dogs, tigers and lambs, donkeys, ducks, dogs and doves all join in for this extravaganza of songs, carols, stories and poems delivered by The Song Company in its inimitable way.

Formed by Charles Colman in 1984, The Song Company is a group of six full-time professional singers led by internationally acclaimed Artistic Director, Roland Peelman. The Song Company aims to create a distinctive and dynamic new voice, relevant to the audiences of today and tomorrow. A Free-Range Christmas reflects this with their broad repertoire of songs, carols, stories and poems, from early music, through to modern classical vocal arrangements, which include Nuns of Chester Carol, Animal Songs, Carols from France and Winnie the Pooh.

Adults will enjoy this as something for the kids, while children will detect that undisguishable thread of coy adult humour throughout… the Song Company again showed themselves not only unembarrassable, but brilliant… as one of Australia's most outstanding music ensembles, they scrimp and save, helping young composers and spreading delight with an always-generous spirit

For the first time ever, Wrestling Legend Hulk Hogan will tour Australia. His new event HULKAMANIA - Let the Battle Begin, will be playing arenas in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney, November 2009.

Ric Flair has been coaxed out of retirement to battle Hulk Hogan in what may be the ultimate grudge match. HULKAMANIA will also feature some of the top stars of wrestling that compete all over the world including Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, Aumaga, Kishi, Black Pearl, Mr Ken Anderson, Shannon Moore, Heidenreich, Godfathar, Brian Knobs, The Nasty Boys, Orlando Jordan, Vampire Warrior, Val Venis, Stephanie Pietz, Koa Marie Gablic, Jimmy Hart and more in the ultimate spectacular HULKAMANIA.

For over two decades the name Hulk Hogan has been synonymous with sports entertainment and professional wrestling. Having set live attendance records all over the world including a live gate of more that 96,000 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome, Hulk Hogan has set his sites on Australia as his next frontier.

Hulk made a quick visit to Australia last week and caught a few footy games while he was here.

“Australia is such a beautiful country with beautiful people,” said Hogan. “My fans in Australia are so loyal, I am so glad that we can finally bring Hulkamania to them”

HULKAMANIA will also include state of the art production; the arenas will be plastered with large screens to show the audience what is happening back stage in between wrestling matches. The night will also contain audience participation, a huge pyro techniques display and more.

From his early beginnings as a young wrestler training under the Tutoledge of the famed Hiro Matsuda who intentionally broke Hulk Hogan’s leg on his first day of training just to test his desire, Hulk Hogan’s larger that life persona and matching arms have turned the industry into the phenomenon it is today.

Also known as The Nature Boy, Ric Flair is among the most well known wrestlers in the world, and is one of wrestling's biggest stars. Flair was often popular with the crowd due to his in-ring antics, his cocky interview style, strutting and his shouting of "Woooooo!" The "Woooooo!" yell has since become a tribute to Flair, and is often shouted by the crowd whenever they see Ric.

Unlike most professional wrestling tag teams, Jerry Sags and Brian Knobbs are childhood friends known as the Nasty Boys; The Nasty Boys defeated The Hart Foundation for the World Tag Team Championship and held the titles until 1991. BLACK PEARL His grace was born to wrestle. The aristocratic “Count Of California” is a gifted athlete who mixes impressive size and strength with astonishing agility for a man of his size.

Kishi is one of the most popular and charismatic stars in the history of professional wrestling. He is a 3-time Tag Team Champion and a former Intercontinental Champion who has feuded with the likes of “Stone Cold Steve Austin,” “The Rock” and “Kurt Angle.” The “Samoan Bulldozer” Aumaga is prepared to run over the competition in Australia. This seemingly uncontrollable savage loves to inflict pain on his opponents, and has left a large wake of destruction behind him thanks to his devastating and debilitating Samoan Spike. Darkness will spread in the arenas of Australia when Vampire Warrior’s sinister presence is made. Vampire Warrior formed a faction known as “The Brood” along with “Edge” and “Christian.” The trio eventually became part of “The Ministry Of Darkness” under the rule of “The Undertaker.”

82nd Annual Academy Awards

September 30th 2009 01:14
Samson & Delilah announced as Australia's official entry for nomination consideration for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards

Tuesday 29 September 2009: Screen Australia today announced that the feature film Samson & Delilah is Australia’s official entry for nomination consideration for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards®.

To be eligible for consideration for the Best Foreign Language Film Award, a film must have been released in its country of origin for at least seven days and is defined by predominantly non-English dialogue. Each country can submit one film for nomination consideration. In 2009 there were two eligible Australian films: Van Diemen’s Land (w: Jonathan auf der Heide, Oscar Redding; d: Jonathan auf der Heide; p: Maggie Miles), which is largely in Gaelic, and Samson & Delilah. A committee of active industry professionals selected Samson & Delilah as the Australian film to be entered.

Written and directed by Warwick Thornton and produced by Kath Shelper, Samson & Delilah is shot predominantly in the Aboriginal language Warlpiri. It stars Marissa Gibson as Delilah and Rowan McNamara as Samson.

Samson & Delilah won the Caméra d’Or for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and screened at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It will have its UK premiere at the London Film Festival in October and begins its theatrical release in France on 25 November. The film is still screening in Australian cinemas after 20 weeks and to date has taken $3.17 million, making it the highest-grossing Australian film of the year. The film releases theatrically in New Zealand this week.

Samson & Delilah was financed by Screen Australia, Screen NSW (NSW Film and Television Office), Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the Adelaide Film Festival. The film is being distributed in Australia by Footprint Films in association with Transmission and Paramount Films. Internationally it is represented by French sales agent Elle Driver.

The 82nd Academy Award® nominations will be announced on 2 February 2010, with the awards presented on 7 March.
