Losing My Religion - REM
REM - Losing My Religion

Breaking with their rules of never having the band lipsync along to a video REM decided to let director Tarsem Singh loose with his ideas about art and religion and the connection between to make this beautiful video. Although the band had been around for a while and well known in the indie scene this was their breakout song/video that saw them become mainstream (and giving the world the most famous Mandolin break ever). A wonderful music video inspired by the films of Tarkovsky and the paintings of Caravaggio.

Enjoy

239. Respectable - Mel and Kim

Respectable Mel and Kim
Mel and Kim - Respectable

This clip is a throw back to 1987 and it is the product of the Stock,Aitken and Waterman production house that gave us Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue. This Jamaican born sister duo of Mel and Kim Appleby was one of the better things that they did. They burst onto the scene with this memorable song that went number one around the world but just when they looked set for international stardom the dream ended with the tragic death of Mel to cancer. At least we will have this clip to remember them by

Sexx Laws Beck
Beck Sexx Laws

The music video, directed by Beck himself, is partly a tribute to the film Mr. Freedom.[1] Jack Black appears in the music video as a member of the Vision Warrior Men's Circle, along with Neil Strauss and Justin Meldal-Johnsen[2] Surreal elements of the video include a refrigerator dry humping an oven, Kenny G (played by Meldal-Johnsen) in a room of football players, and a spinning mannequin of a zebra with a banjo.

There are several versions of the video. The original (once posted on Beck's website) was over 18 minutes long and extended the intro of the Men's Circle. The subsequent versions edited out the intro and ending, the latter truncating a pep rally speech by Jack Black's character.

The Universal - Blur
Blur - The Universal

A great clip for a great song by a great band - The Universal was from Blur's fourth studio album The Great Escape. Their previous album Parklife featured two big ballads (To the End and This Is A Low). The Universal fits the same bill here. The clip is by British wunderkid director Jonathon Glazer (who thrilled us with the Jamiroquoi Virtual Insanity clip and then went on the direct feature films Sexy Beast and Birth). The clip is notable for it's homage to Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. The band are dressed up like the Droogs from the film and many of the shots are references to the film (Glazer has elements of Kubrick films in most of his clips). From the pinnacle of brit pop here is Blur's Universal - enjoy

234. Gold - Spandau Ballet

Gold - Spandau Ballet
Spandau Ballet

No band is quintessentially more 80's than UK pop new romantic sensation Spandau Ballet - led by the brothers Kemp they ruled the eighties with their power ballads and heart felt lyrics. This is one of my favourites and I am sure will bring alot of memories back for those who were around in 1983 - it went all the way to number #2 on the UK charts (during that time when Michael Jackson's thriller seemed to hold most of the number one spots). Hope you enjoy

I heard that someone was planning a live action version of Akira!

Great post

you've given me both motivation and inspiration to write that book next year (though it is more of a how to manual for new dads than a novel)

Thanks for the lovely post you left on my

Great review.

I never really got into the band and I thouht use your illusion was completely overblown BUT Appetite For Destruction is one of the great rock albums of the 1980's

Still for me it isn't really Guns N Roses without Slash

That's a great cartoon - Tragically I followed Cib's line of thinking for the first minute going "what's so funny about a crocodile" then it twigged!! Glad I finally got it

I don't think that Haydos is in the same league as Steve Waugh as a batsman or as a figure of adoration for the Australian public. He's a big bully who turns into a sook. Time to get Sean Marsh into to the team - he's another 10 year player (and much better than his old man)

I love that first photo of the woman in Central Park - It's so perfect and the symmetry is amazing.

To be honest she always looks airbrushed to within an inch of her life (probably by the sam people who work overtime to put a little emotion in Nicole Kidman's face!)

Love the site
