Shame

The attacks on the World Trade Center will be seared in our national memory alongside the attack on Pearl Harbor. Beyond the horrors of the attack itself, we should remember our own failures – the hundreds of firefighters who died because the police radio system didn’t match the fire department system and so the firefighters never got the message that the buildings were collapsing. Thousands of others have suffered long term respiratory damage because they were assured there was no need for safety equipment. On September 13th, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a press release stating “monitoring and sampling conducted” had been “very reassuring about potential exposure of rescue crews and the public to environmental contaminants.” Tests showed asbestos and other contaminants in the air, but the people exposed were never warned. Rather, they were assured that the air was safe.
Some of these people are still alive, but seriously ill with conditions caused by their work at the World Trade Center.
On July 29, 2010, a bill which would have funded continued medical care for these people, heroes then but victims now, was defeated in the House of Representatives. It was too expensive.
