Acting, Design and Technical Production students from TAFE SA's Adelaide College of the Arts present one of William Shakespeare's most beloved plays, Richard III.

A genuine favourite of theatre-goers the world over, many critics argue Richard III is without doubt in the top tier of all the Shakespearean works, both poetically and structurally. Shakespeare struck gold with this early play by creating the appalling and wonderful Richard of Gloucester, who hacks through his whole family tree to get to the throne, and does it with caustic wit and bitter gall. Richard III is enormous fun and audiences love it.

"The central character of Richard is often played as a melodramatic villain, a supreme actor, winking at the audience as he murders his brother, nephews, wife and anyone else that crosses him. That's a legitimate reading, but in this production we're going for something else," says Terence Crawford, Head of Acting at the Adelaide College of the Arts. "We're exploring the story of a child who is born different (deformed, unfinished, sent before my time into this breathing world scarce half-made up) and who is mocked and derided for his difference - a subject of scorn and an object of repulsion from the day he is born. What happens to a child that is told that it is evil? Where do sociopaths come from? Nature or nurture? These are the darker questions our production pursues and we'd love to have you with us for the experiment."
