Sex always sells? Is everything related to sex?

I was in class the other day, and the lecturer asked us : “ Sex sells in every country isn’t it?”. Well , no I thought. So I objected, arguing that in some conservative countries it is not the case. I am thinking of the Arabic countries, the African ones and some Asian ones.
In these countries sexual images, naked people ...etc raise protests and even add for condoms have to be very careful to do not offend the population. In that case how can we really say that sex sells in these countries?
I was told that they take nice ladies for ads like washing liquid or beauty products for women. Yes sure I replied but the target audience is women.

But even that didn’t seem to convince them. The guys told me “well that’s good for me”. And the lecturer concluded that indeed sex sells everywhere.
I am a bit shocked by that unanimous verdict. Have we really lost our minds so that we associate everything with sex?
Well seen a pretty women or man on the screen is it necessary linked to sex?
For sure the advertisers will take a pretty women to advertise for beauty product, does that make it sexually tinted?
So when the chose a cute little kid for an add, does that make us all pedophiles? And when they show us a nice house, nice bike or pet does that make us sexually attracted to them?
Is the fact that we like beauty, and god knows that the definition of beauty is various and different, necessarily have a connection to sex?
As a person who is interested in art, painting…etc, I like to look at people who have interesting faces, shapes or expression and different type of beauties. And I often find myself watching if not staring at people and thinking of drawing them, or that they are really lovely... and that whatever their sex is.... does that make me bisexual?

Of course not. So maybe we should take one minute to think of the sayings that we just have been told so many times. And if we just stop and think of what it implies maybe we can figure out if we really agree with it....Or maybe not!

Interesting Post. I think you have a point that in conservative countries sex is definitely used in more subtle ways. I think it's still used though. It depends if you mean "is it used for everything" or "is it just used for certain ads".

The thing is today we seem to relate everything to sex.... I just think that an add with a nice man or women might make me buy something .... I don't really think that it is necessarily related to the fact that they may be sexy, handsome or whatsoever... Depending on your culture, the things that talks about sex or imply sex or sexual activities have the opposite effect.
Maybe it depends what we mean by sex always sell??? Anyway, it is just good to have a critical thinking of all these ideas that are so often repeated to us that we take them as an undeniable truth!
