"Is the Sky Really Falling"

February 28th 2008 17:09
My son played a sound bit for a song by a rap artist in which the main chorus was the words, “I’m a hustling, hustling”, repeated over and over before the song moved into a number of explanations /examples of the goal to achieve success. Well without all the expletives, but definitely the work---I have been “hustling”. The great thing about it is I don’t mind striving, if I know where I’m going and I actually enjoy the process. I’ve had my stint with trying to download email programs on a Mac---so far no good. I’ve been using the simple and basic (I mean really basic!!) email program that comes with my web hosting package. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade---and make it strong. So out went the basic emails, and it worked ok, there was a gracious response.

Now I must thank Queen Fullmoon a local Detroit Loctician (fullmoon6earth@hotmail.com), for being the Detroit connection of “L.B. Soc”…for locs, braids & more and “TOPAZ” a shower cap. People in Detroit can purchase Denise Reed products from her and save the shipping/handling cost, but you will have to pay retail. In Wilmington, DE there is Sandy of Zelda’s Hair Clinic, and in Brooklyn its Tabeel Salon & Gift Shop, to theses buyers I say thank you---you help me grow. Just recently I got a great invite from a fellow unique hair care product designer, Deon Leftenant (www.locksdown.com), who is also is doing it up with creative and colorful hair care maintenance products. I’ve been noticing that there is a heightened interest in creating products to be nice to our hair. Loved your site Deon, and hope I can join your Facebook community, as soon as I learn how (smile)! Great success to you, there is definitely a need for what we both create.

When I think of creativity, I feel a little sad for my husband and his creative cooking streak. While I am downstairs sewing and filling orders for the business, he stands in as chief cook. Now I know men love their big screen tv’s, but my man also loves the humongous Frigidare he purchased just about eighteen months ago. Of course he loves it, that’s where he keeps all the special fresh ingredients for the great meals he cooks. Well it went down the first week in February---just when he had laid in all his staples for the upcoming football “Combine” eekkkk!, distaster. No problem, call the service center and the store where we purchased this wonderful defrosting giant, Lowes, who then hooks us up with an authorized service center. From here things started going downhill for my husband and his relationship with and I quote, “the best refridigerator in the world”. First the authorized service representative tells him they do not do repairs in Detroit, and suggest we find someone else to fix the appliance. When my husband assures them that he paid an extra $199. for an extended warranty on this appliance, and resort to reporting them to Lowes they change their story and make the house call. To make a long story short, two weeks later, three weeks of groceries ruined, and still the appliance doesn’t work---the best refridigerator is no longer that great and I’ve lost 4 pounds.

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth on the LORD, happy is he. Proverbs 16:20

Well, How Do I Look?

December 24th 2007 11:41

It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to write, and things/events seem to pile up. My husband is home and recuperating nicely. I’m not allowing him to do much, because I see no reason to rush the healing process, its something I think must be allowed to happen in a slow positive manner. This idea on healing is similar to the way I think a business should grow, slowly and deliberately, with the owners enjoying the process. I sometimes get the impression that people are forgetting to “savor “ the flavor of life. Since I won a place in the Homebased 100 from StartUpNation, business has really been up. The winning has given me some instant celebrity status, which is nice recognition for the work I’ve put into my products and the business. Now I’ve put that in its proper perspective, I like the way the recognition has helped me, and the business grow. I’m working at learning how to delegate jobs, (online marketing and keeping the books) that don’t play on my personal strengths. Like I told my children, I love having a business and sure I want it to make millions.

When I was younger I had a problem with “thumb-sucking”, nothing my family did or said to me could stop me from sucking my ever-present thumb. Then it happened, around my 15th birthday, something was said that caused me to decide that this habit must stop—and I set out to find a way. It took awhile, but a review of circumstances showed that there were times when I didn’t suck my thumb at---hope was born. It took a year of tying my hand to my right leg at night, so that I would not engage in this habit while asleep. During the day I would just keep stopping myself when the urge arose to engage in my now unwanted habit. One night when I was just to tired to restrain my hand, I dozed off and slept soundly without once putting the available digit in my mouth—Victory. That incident has been a helpful example of working to win for me. I’ve set it as a standard for any task I have come against, to know that with faith, time (patience to wait on God), and perseverance there will be a victory. A year was given/taken to see success, in not being controlled by the thumb-sucking habit. I see that in being self-employed, one needs to take the time to enjoy the process of succeeding in being successful. Remember the old adage, “How do you eat and elephant? One bite at a time.” Well, “How do I Look?”

Better is a handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit. Ecclesiastes 4:6

I Won! I Won!!

November 9th 2007 00:42
Well I am over joyed, I won StartupNation Home-based 100, Wackiest business. I am truly honored--I was trying for Boomers back in business, but got unusal product instead. Boy did I ever need tht win. Check me out at Really Long Link

I also introduced my new shower cap design, for the wearer's of loc's, braids and just anyone who needs a good and substantial shower cap. "TOPAZ" a shower cap is custom designed to take into account the bulk and weight that is encountered with heavy ethnic hairstyles. This is the culmination of over two years of testing and designing. I'm starting off with limited production---which I can do because I am the boss! So far the reception has been great. The headband is substantial, its washable, not throw away, great for men and women.

Now along with the introduction of my shower cap, my husband suddenly became seriously ill. So with my joy came some sorrow---and I spent this past week sewing into the night, saving the days to sit at the hospital with my mate. He's doing better, and is anxious to return home and help me. Now just think, if I was not an entrepreanuer, this crazy hectic schedule would not have went over with any boss.

So I'm saddened by my husband's sudden ill health, but I am so grateful that I can be there for him, and the self empowerment of doing what I love has made this possible. Thanks to all who know about the StartupNation website and voted for my business--boy, I'm glad I WON!!!!!

The Road Less Traveled

October 16th 2007 11:07
Well it been rough, but worth it. To think about it, getting a new product out the door and into the hands of waiting customers is a rush. Been sewing and finalizing shipping cost, taking pictures. Now here is the Catch 22 of the situation--I have a product, which I make, it fits a niche market, and sells fairly well. I am nearly at the end of the money, but the product is really to good to let die. All the cost of doing business have doubled---Have you checked the cost of postage/shipping lately? One week it cost me roughly $3.50 to mail a order out, the very next day the same order to ship jumped to nearly $9.00 to post. So of course there was a scramble to find and alternate carrier other that the trusty USPS. Shipping is still a bit high, and could become a factor in changing my product distribution.

The Road Less Traveled is usually the one that looks the most threathening. I enjoy being a "micropreneur" having the opportunity to generate wealth within the context of family first, lifestyle needs second and wealth procurement last. I'm green---my husband and I try to live within our means, keep our eco-footprints small, and still enjoy life

New York, New York

September 28th 2007 15:04
Well we did it, my husband and I made it to New York, and back without a hitch. The most important thing about this business trip, besides purchasing inventory fabric, was keeping cost down. First things first was to get from the airport to the Fabric District---we took the M60 bus to Astoria/Ditmar Station, and hopped on the N train. So for a total of $4.00 each and a 45 minute ride, we arrived at Canal Street and Brooklyn---the heart of the Fabric District. To say the least I was in fabric heaven, my husband was in "people watcher" paradise. We totlly looked like "out-of-towner's", thank goodness it would only be one day.

So with wholesale fabric houses as far as the eye could see, I began my quest to make relationships with the shop owners, so I could call them, instead of personal visit for later purchases. It took me just about three hours to find just waht I was looking for, but another half hour to get to an agreeable price. Of the many stores we visited, two were really helpful, in trying to get my business, Joe at NY Fabric Warehouse, 406 Broadway----he got samples from his warehouse in New Jersey for me. Isaac the owner of Cherechian Trading Coo. Inc. gave me a great deal on the waterproof fabric I need for my new shower cap designs, I will be debuting the end of October. I'm excited about the colors I'll be able to offer, and can hardly wait for the shipment to arrive on today

Don't Worry, Make Money

September 22nd 2007 10:04
Don't Worry, Make Money a small inspirational and practical book by Richard Carlson, Ph. D. is really keeping me going as I make my way into the world of business. Now I've been really thinking about my income producing dream. The next level of self-employment, at my age---and this book inspires me to go for it. It contains vengettes of common sense, written in easy to understand language. It covers all aspects of money and wealth and its related stress factors. The individual readings have headings like "Learn the Magic of Nonattachment", "Accept the Fact that You Can Make Excuses, You Can Make Money, but You Can't Do Both" and the one I've just put into practice "Hire Up". I decided to hire Mandela Web Designs to revamp the website that I've been trying personally to set-up. The site is up and running, adding creditability to my growing business empire. I'm happy with the site and the business relationship built with Manda, my web designer. Now the great thing about this little, don't woory, make money step is I don't have to stress over that area of my business development. Hiring up is a good thing.

Still working on the New York trip. I've done my homework, think I know where I'm going and have made my contact. When I was attending school, to obtain my degree I found that the journey of acquiring knowledge was just as important as the final goal---the degree. So a nervous entrepreneur goes forth into the world to make her mark---and it will be good.

Busines is as Business Does

September 18th 2007 07:49
I completely enjoy what I'm doing. The rush of decision-making, the stress of the unknown. I was watching the reality show Kimmora Simmons-Life in the Fab Lane, this week and saw some similarities between the two of us. Take it she is much taller than I, and also has a great deal more disposable cash, but we have similarities. Motherhood, drive, ambition, and motherwit to guide us. My daughter tuned me into this program, basically I avoid reality shows, but this one is inspiring. Here I see a young woman, garner her strengths and opportunities and build a business empire. She works by intuition and wisdom, surrounding herself with adept advisors, and monitors the influences she encounters. I to have put likewise instruments of success in place, some from reading great motivational authors, creative input from magazines and street observations. I'm constantly looking, compiling, creating and developing new idea's and challenges to push myself farther. Sometimes I wonder why society,(this is a generalizatin) as a whole tries to constantly thwart the successes of intuitive business-person's. Those who have not acquired a degree in business by the academic channels, but have learned business by living it. I went back to school and earned by degree, rather late in life, and put it to use daily---but sometimes the learned theories have hindered my innate business sense. I really appreciate my college dregree---loved the experience, the rush of flying by the seat of my pants is thrilling.

I mentioned my product, "L.B. Soc"...for loc's, braids & more. which I make, package, market, and ship personally. Well I followed the book method of product development, product protection (patent process, trademark process), and got SMACKED in the face. My first mind was to take my simple product---a hair "snood" for the niche market of those who wear their hair in loc's, braids or braids with extensions, and hit the market running. My product is a"mother-of-invention" idea, I saw a need and filled it. Cover your Loc's with my hair "snood", it will keep them clean, and make for a comfortable nights sleep. Pure and simple. So alongs comes a merchandising giant to challenge my steps at working the system. My product name, which I searched the patent and trademark system, now is being contested. Apparantly "L.B. Soc"...for loc's, braids & more. might make you think of some other company other than mine. No I don't think so---so for the last year and a half, I've been fighting for my business life. Now you see why I like the Kimmora Simmons show---this woman stands up and defends her image and her ideas. Like I said, she's taller, has more income (hope to improve that soon), but we both dig in and go for it. Thanks, Ms. Simmons for your example---a true working woman.

Learning New Modes of Thinking

September 15th 2007 12:41
Well I'm preparing for New York and my buying trip for inventory. We are doing this on the low side, by taking the bus to the airport and chatching the bus into New York, then the subway to the Fabric District. Nervous is only a word, been reading Don't Worry, Make Money by Richard Carlson, Ph. D. and its really good practical advice on wealth management. FEAR is definately the biggest hinderance to optaining wealth and creative growth, Just like in the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind I allowed past hereditary habits block my success with acquiring wealth. Now I've always known that money is just a medium if exchange--I'm been self-employed since I was 11 years old. I've held maybe 5 on the books jobs in my 50 something odd years of life. I work steady, and now I want to prosper from those labors. I don't think its to late, but sometimes I get butterflies in my stomach over the next decision I have to make. When that happens I think about the comic strip character Charlie Brown, who usually makes what appears to him great messes of his daily life situations. After one such mess on the baseball field, Charlie Brown had shut himself up in his bedroom and decided not to come out---his thumb-sucking friend Linus visited hime with some sage advice which has help me overcome many a fearful decision. Linus pointed out to Charlie Brown that unless one of his decisions stopped the sun from rising, it was definately a major problem--Linus promply raised the window blind in Charlie' room and allowed the bright sunshine to filter in. I now look at decisions in that manner and it eliminates a great deal of unnessary stress. Sometimes you just have to talk yourself back up on the mountian top, and out of the dark valley.

Well another thing I have done for growing is go out and have lunch with a collegue. We were both giddy with excitement as we sat in thee resturant and order a real sit-down meal. We chatted incessantly about being away from home (we both have home-based businesses) and acting like real people. We vowed to do it again next month at a more exclusive resturant. Now the importance of this little foray into the world is that as soon as the date was made, we had to keep rescheduling because of business needs. It finally dawned on us, that if we didn't make time for ourselves now, we would be caught int the trap of business-motherhood. Business-motherhood is when women who run businessses, never take time for themselves, and wear themselves down, just like most mothers do during child-rearing time. For the record, the sandwich and garlic-broasted potatoes was delicious at New Center Eatery Woodward and East Grand Blvd. Detroit, MI.

We're Moving on Up

September 13th 2007 23:38
Well my business is bringing in some money, but that's because I really haven't focused on its growth. Now I'm inspired by everything I read--but have I really commited myself to success. You bet I have---so in a couple of weeks, my husand and I shall venture forth to New York for resources. I've checked the internet and have gotten some goods, but I need more, so road trip is on the books. Facing my FEARS, is what I am doing, and I'm thankful for my husbands support---he really want to see NY.

Committed to Success

September 12th 2007 11:56
On busy days the mind seeems to wander---today I must think about new designs, find fabrics, updates on webpages and money. I know now that I need a support group, I had great support when I was in Mother mode---plenty of people there to offer wisdom and advice on every aspect of child-rearing. I'm a business women, or least that's the new objective. Now I knew I would need preparation for this change in life direction, so of course I tried to prepare myself. Because I'm naturally creative a book I picked up and read The Vein of Gold by Julia Cameron help me to begin my focus on the creative potential within. The force of being creative, of profiting from one's innovativeness for the betterment of self and community, inspired me to go forth and "blossom" in the dymanics of self evolution. Yep! that's taking motherhood to a whole new plateau. I have an evolved idea of success--its taking the job training of raising and shaping a family to raising and growing a business endeavor. I notice I have to do an entirely different type of reading and research to be a success at what I've chosen to now do. Just as in S. Johnson's Who Moved My Cheese I had to decide how I would allow change to affect me. Change---no children to feed, take to school(s), monitor, play with, the list can go on and on. You awake one day and the house is quiet---so you go out and start a business!!! Now I must get business information and business friend/confidants. So just how do you really network, when you been in the house for the last 25 years?
