Seattle Mariners acquire Michael Morse

January 17th 2013 17:13
The overwhelming opinion from most Seattle Mariners fans is that the trade that sent Mike Morse to the Mariners essentially for John Jaso is an awful trade for the Mariners. USS Mariner has an article by Dave Cameron that outlines how awful this trade is. The argument seems to be that John Jaso was the Mariners' best hitter last season and had an OBP near .400 and as bad as the Mariners lineup was in 2012 we need all the good bats we can get. Also, Jaso was a catcher. A position the Mariners need. And Seattle already had Justin Smoak, Jesus Montero, Kendrys Morales, Raul Ibanez, and Mike Carp to fill the 1B/DH role. So why would they want to add another? Here is why. First, 2012 was a career best year for Jaso, keep that in mind.

John Jaso (2012)
.276/.394/.456 10 HR 50 RBI

Mike Morse (2012)
.291/.321/.470 18 HR 62 RBI

And 2012 was a down year for Morse. The previous year he hit 31 HRs and drove in over 100. And let's look at the big picture. Everyone wants to criticize the Mariners front office for the horrible job they have done this season. But let's look at last season's lineup vs. this season projected lineup.

1) Dustin Ackley - 2B
2) Franklin Gutierrez - CF
3) Kyle Seager - 3B
4) John Jaso - C
5) Jesus Montero - DH
6) MIchael Saunders - LF
7) Justin Smoak - 1B
8) Casper Wells - RF
9) Brendan Ryan - SS

The new lineup should score a lot more runs!! True, the outfield defense might not be very good but the added offense should more than make up for that. Justin Smoak can begin the year at AAA until he proves he can handle the pitching and deserves to be in the big leagues. In July Mike Zunino should get called up and catch and Ibanez will probably lose plate appearances. And let's not forget the biggest advantage of having Michael Morse. When the Mariners are in 4th place in July Mike Morse should get traded to a contender (if no extension can be worked out) and will bring back a lot more than John Jaso would have.

As much good as John Jaso did last season he was basically a backup catcher who was awful defensively and couldn't touch LHP. I understand the short comings of this team but adding Mike Morse is a good move.

And it's also possible that a bigger trade could be in the works. Possibly Giancarlo Stanton or maybe Justin Upton changes his mind and accepts a trade. But the best part of Mike Morse is he didn't cost Nick Franklin (potentially are next SS), James Paxton, Charlie Furbush, or Stephen Pryor. this is a good trade and I still believe the best is yet to come in Seattle. I still believe the kids will get better and then can compete by 2014 or 2015.
