Round 5 WNBL Review
November 10th 2010 09:32
This was a rather predictable round with all the favourites winning and yours truely was able to tune into the ABC to see Dandenong vs Logan. With that in mind, I will provide a review of all the rounds results with extended coverage of the Dandenong vs Logan game.
Canberra 74 defeated Townsville 61
The round kicked off on a Friday night in the nations capital as the Canberra Capitals took on the Townsville Fire. The Fire have been pretty ordinary at times this season while the Capitals have shown why they're title favourites.
This match would be another notch in the title favouritism belt but Townsville were very plcky and brave. They trailed by as much as 10 in the first half but worked their way to be down by 2 points at half-time. They again came from 10 down to trail by just 2 in the last quarter but Canberra's superior talent and experience told down the stretch as they ran away with the game to win by 13.
Carly Wilson was absolutely superb for the Capitals with 20 points while Jo Hill led Townsville with 18 points. Canberra improve their record to 8-1 while Townsville slip to 1-4.

West Coast 64 lost to Bendigo 67
Another match out west as Bendigo embarked on their Doomsday Double. With Dandeong having already conquered the double, Bendigo were bidding to join them and against West Coast, they were favoured to do just that.
It was a tough defensive minded game with neither side prepared to give an inch and after an average first quarter, West Coast hit back to take the lead at half-time. Sadly that was where West Coast's heartbreak began as Bendigo's Tess Madgen hit 12 points in the 3rd quarter and aided by West Coast errors, Bendigo took an 8 point lead into the last change. West Coast came back really hard in the last quarter and in fact managed to tie up the scores before Kristi Harrower hit the winning basket for Bendigo to secure a much needed 3 point win
Tess Madgen was an absolute star for Bendigo with 24 points while Samantha Norwood led the West Coast scoring with just 13 points. Bendigo improved their record to 2-3 while West Coast were dumped down to 1-4.

Dandenong 99 defeated Logan 63
Logan were the fairytale story of the year coming into this game having ended Dandenong's unbeaten start last weekend while Dandenong had been subjected to a tough week on the court after a road double loss up in Queensland.
The opening quarter would possibly have to go down as the best quarter of women's basketball that I have ever witnessed. Both teams were defending really hard and tough but the offense was really exceptional as shots were being knocked down from everywhere. The shooting beyond the 3 point arc in particular was exceptional and the turning point in the quarter was when Dandenong's Stephanie Cumming made her entrance onto the court. 8 points later and Dandenong led by 8 with a Logan time out being called.
Shots continued to be knocked down and at quarter-time Dandenong led 32-26. The most notable stat from the quarter was the shooting percentage of both teams. Dandenong shot at 73% from the field compared to Logan's 67% and if that continued we were in for an absolute treat.
Sadly it didn't and the second quarter was some of the best defense I'll ever see from a Dandenong team. Logan couldn't buy a basket and while Dandenong were missing some shots, they were still knocking more than enough down to tear the game away from Logan. The defensive intensity was nothing short of fantastic and Logan were limited to 11 points as Dandenong extended their lead to 59-37 at the half.
37 for a team in a half isn't too disasterous as long as your defense is performing and Logan's was falling apart but it was the offense that was the problem. They did shoot a little better in the 3rd quarter as Dandenong continued to see their shooting percentage from the field fall. Unfortunately Logan were again limited to 11 points while Dandenong scored 21 to extend the lead to an unheard of 80-47 at the last change.
The last quarter was junk time as both teams emptied their bench and as a result, the game deteriorated into a real scrap. Dandeong won the scrap as well as the main game with the obsession surrounding them reaching 100 points but sadly they finished 1 short as the demolished Logan by 36 points.
Abby Bishop was an absolute star for Dandenong shooting 26 points at 69% from the field. Stephanie Cumming scored 19 at 70% from the field while Kathleen McLeod also scored 19 at 64% from the field. As for Logan it was a depressing story with Renae Camino leading the scoring with 19 points, Holly Smith scoring 13 and Cayla Francis 10. Dandenong improve their record to 5-2 while Logan's fairytale start has hit the wall as they fall to 4-2/

Sydney 75 lost to Bulleen 95
Further proof of the benefits of an overseas trip were shown here as Bulleen overran Sydney to claim an important win by 20 points. Sydney led at quarter-time by 1 point but that was where their luck ended as Bulleen put on an extraordinary shooting masterclass. They claimed a 7 point lead at half-time and then tore apart Sydney in the second half to claim the win.
Looking at the stats, you really would have trouble seeing where Sydney lost the game. They had less turnovers, held their own against Bulleen's bigs on the rebounds (losing the rebounds 40-32), had 5 more shots than Bulleen and they managed to score what would normally be a winning score in 75 points. Unfortunately you come to the field goal percentage and that's where the answer lies. Despite having 5 more shots, they shot an abysmal 39% from the field compared to Bulleen's 55% with Bulleen shooting 50% or more in all 4 quarters.
Rachel Jarry played the perfect all round game for Bulleen with 25 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks while for Sydney, Amy Denson led the scoring with 25 points. Bulleen improve their record to 3-3 while Sydney slip to the same record at 3-3 and Bulleen lead the important head to head over Sydney too.

AIS 59 lost to Townsville 82
Townsville managed to split the Canberra double as they toppled the AIS by 23 points on Saturday night. That being said, the AIS would be bitterly disappointed with their first half performance here. They shot an abysmal 19% from the field in the first quarter to trail by 9 at the first change and despite improving their shooting percentage in the second quarter saw the game come to an end as Townsville blew the game out to 21 points at the half. The AIS to their credit put up a very good fight in the second half but they just didn't have enough quality to make inroads into the Townsville lead
Jo Hill continued her great weekend with 19 points while for the AIS, two players managed a double-double with Tayla Roberts scoring 22 points and pulling in 10 rebounds while Gretal Tippett had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Townsville improve their record to 2-4 while the AIS take bottom spot with 1-5.

Adelaide 79 lost to Bendigo 91
The last match of the round saw Bendigo complete their dreaded Doomsday double undefeated as they defeated Adelaide by 12 points in a very high scoring match. Both teams went basket for basket in the first half as Bendigo managed to open up a 4 point lead at half-time. Adelaide slackened off at the start of the 3rd quarter and that was the end of it as Harrower got busy for Bendigo and pushed the lead to 14 points midway through the 3rd quarter. Despite the best efforts of Adelaide, they could only reduce the margin to 12 points by the end of the game
Tess Madgen was an absolute star for Bendigo and she'll be a real player in the future leading the scoring with 25 points. Angela Marino and Emma Langford both led the scoring for Adelaide with 16 points. Bendigo join Sydney at 3-3 while Adelaide slip into real trouble at 1-4
