Round 5 WNBL Review

November 10th 2010 09:32
This was a rather predictable round with all the favourites winning and yours truely was able to tune into the ABC to see Dandenong vs Logan. With that in mind, I will provide a review of all the rounds results with extended coverage of the Dandenong vs Logan game.

Canberra 74 defeated Townsville 61
The round kicked off on a Friday night in the nations capital as the Canberra Capitals took on the Townsville Fire. The Fire have been pretty ordinary at times this season while the Capitals have shown why they're title favourites.

This match would be another notch in the title favouritism belt but Townsville were very plcky and brave. They trailed by as much as 10 in the first half but worked their way to be down by 2 points at half-time. They again came from 10 down to trail by just 2 in the last quarter but Canberra's superior talent and experience told down the stretch as they ran away with the game to win by 13.

Carly Wilson was absolutely superb for the Capitals with 20 points while Jo Hill led Townsville with 18 points. Canberra improve their record to 8-1 while Townsville slip to 1-4.

Votes:
3 - Marianna Tolo (Canberra)
2 - Carly Wilson (Canberra)
1 - Jo Hill (Townsville)

West Coast 64 lost to Bendigo 67
Another match out west as Bendigo embarked on their Doomsday Double. With Dandeong having already conquered the double, Bendigo were bidding to join them and against West Coast, they were favoured to do just that.

It was a tough defensive minded game with neither side prepared to give an inch and after an average first quarter, West Coast hit back to take the lead at half-time. Sadly that was where West Coast's heartbreak began as Bendigo's Tess Madgen hit 12 points in the 3rd quarter and aided by West Coast errors, Bendigo took an 8 point lead into the last change. West Coast came back really hard in the last quarter and in fact managed to tie up the scores before Kristi Harrower hit the winning basket for Bendigo to secure a much needed 3 point win

Tess Madgen was an absolute star for Bendigo with 24 points while Samantha Norwood led the West Coast scoring with just 13 points. Bendigo improved their record to 2-3 while West Coast were dumped down to 1-4.

Votes:
3 - Tess Madgen (Bendigo)
2 - Tuly Bevilaqua (West Coast)
1 - Gabrielle Richards (Bendigo)

Dandenong 99 defeated Logan 63
Logan were the fairytale story of the year coming into this game having ended Dandenong's unbeaten start last weekend while Dandenong had been subjected to a tough week on the court after a road double loss up in Queensland.

The opening quarter would possibly have to go down as the best quarter of women's basketball that I have ever witnessed. Both teams were defending really hard and tough but the offense was really exceptional as shots were being knocked down from everywhere. The shooting beyond the 3 point arc in particular was exceptional and the turning point in the quarter was when Dandenong's Stephanie Cumming made her entrance onto the court. 8 points later and Dandenong led by 8 with a Logan time out being called.

Shots continued to be knocked down and at quarter-time Dandenong led 32-26. The most notable stat from the quarter was the shooting percentage of both teams. Dandenong shot at 73% from the field compared to Logan's 67% and if that continued we were in for an absolute treat.

Sadly it didn't and the second quarter was some of the best defense I'll ever see from a Dandenong team. Logan couldn't buy a basket and while Dandenong were missing some shots, they were still knocking more than enough down to tear the game away from Logan. The defensive intensity was nothing short of fantastic and Logan were limited to 11 points as Dandenong extended their lead to 59-37 at the half.

37 for a team in a half isn't too disasterous as long as your defense is performing and Logan's was falling apart but it was the offense that was the problem. They did shoot a little better in the 3rd quarter as Dandenong continued to see their shooting percentage from the field fall. Unfortunately Logan were again limited to 11 points while Dandenong scored 21 to extend the lead to an unheard of 80-47 at the last change.

The last quarter was junk time as both teams emptied their bench and as a result, the game deteriorated into a real scrap. Dandeong won the scrap as well as the main game with the obsession surrounding them reaching 100 points but sadly they finished 1 short as the demolished Logan by 36 points.

Abby Bishop was an absolute star for Dandenong shooting 26 points at 69% from the field. Stephanie Cumming scored 19 at 70% from the field while Kathleen McLeod also scored 19 at 64% from the field. As for Logan it was a depressing story with Renae Camino leading the scoring with 19 points, Holly Smith scoring 13 and Cayla Francis 10. Dandenong improve their record to 5-2 while Logan's fairytale start has hit the wall as they fall to 4-2/

3 - Abby Bishop (Dandenong)
2 - Kathleen McLeod (Dandenong)
1 - Chantella Pereira (Dandenong)

Sydney 75 lost to Bulleen 95
Further proof of the benefits of an overseas trip were shown here as Bulleen overran Sydney to claim an important win by 20 points. Sydney led at quarter-time by 1 point but that was where their luck ended as Bulleen put on an extraordinary shooting masterclass. They claimed a 7 point lead at half-time and then tore apart Sydney in the second half to claim the win.

Looking at the stats, you really would have trouble seeing where Sydney lost the game. They had less turnovers, held their own against Bulleen's bigs on the rebounds (losing the rebounds 40-32), had 5 more shots than Bulleen and they managed to score what would normally be a winning score in 75 points. Unfortunately you come to the field goal percentage and that's where the answer lies. Despite having 5 more shots, they shot an abysmal 39% from the field compared to Bulleen's 55% with Bulleen shooting 50% or more in all 4 quarters.

Rachel Jarry played the perfect all round game for Bulleen with 25 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks while for Sydney, Amy Denson led the scoring with 25 points. Bulleen improve their record to 3-3 while Sydney slip to the same record at 3-3 and Bulleen lead the important head to head over Sydney too.

Votes:
3 - Rachel Jarry (Bulleen)
2 - Elyse Penaluna (Bulleen)
1 - Elizabeth Cambage (Bulleen)

AIS 59 lost to Townsville 82
Townsville managed to split the Canberra double as they toppled the AIS by 23 points on Saturday night. That being said, the AIS would be bitterly disappointed with their first half performance here. They shot an abysmal 19% from the field in the first quarter to trail by 9 at the first change and despite improving their shooting percentage in the second quarter saw the game come to an end as Townsville blew the game out to 21 points at the half. The AIS to their credit put up a very good fight in the second half but they just didn't have enough quality to make inroads into the Townsville lead

Jo Hill continued her great weekend with 19 points while for the AIS, two players managed a double-double with Tayla Roberts scoring 22 points and pulling in 10 rebounds while Gretal Tippett had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Townsville improve their record to 2-4 while the AIS take bottom spot with 1-5.

Votes:
3 - Jo Hill (Townsville)
2 - Tayla Roberts (AIS)
1 - Rachael Flanagan (Townsville)

Adelaide 79 lost to Bendigo 91
The last match of the round saw Bendigo complete their dreaded Doomsday double undefeated as they defeated Adelaide by 12 points in a very high scoring match. Both teams went basket for basket in the first half as Bendigo managed to open up a 4 point lead at half-time. Adelaide slackened off at the start of the 3rd quarter and that was the end of it as Harrower got busy for Bendigo and pushed the lead to 14 points midway through the 3rd quarter. Despite the best efforts of Adelaide, they could only reduce the margin to 12 points by the end of the game

Tess Madgen was an absolute star for Bendigo and she'll be a real player in the future leading the scoring with 25 points. Angela Marino and Emma Langford both led the scoring for Adelaide with 16 points. Bendigo join Sydney at 3-3 while Adelaide slip into real trouble at 1-4

Votes:
3 - Tess Madgen (Bendigo)
2 - Angela Marino (Adelaide)
1 - Kristi Harrower (Bendigo)

So with the round completed, the voting leaderboard is starting to look interesting with Marianna Tolo continuing to hold the lead but there are a number of players chasing her quite hard.

17 - Marianna Tolo (Canberra)
10 - Kathleen McLeod (Dandenong)
10 - Carly Wilson (Canberra)
9 - Tess Madgen (Bendigo)
8 - Kristan Veal (Logan)
8 - Tracey Gahan (Dandenong)
8 - Elizabeth Cambage (Bulleen)
8 - Tuly Bevilaqua (West Coast)
8 - Abby Bishop (Dandenong)

So we’ve just lost a one-day series to Sri Lanka 2-1 and had our only win come in the dead rubber up at the Gabba.

It is a very low point in Australian Cricket and there are a good many questions that need to be asked and answered. There have been also a good many suggestions and I think it’s time that we looked at all the issues and saw some changes made, not only to the playing roster, but also behind the scenes.

I will highlight a number of these issues/questions and try to provide reasonable answers in order to see if we could get to the bottom of our troubles.

1. Dad’s Army
Have a look at the last test squad that went over to India. When you look at that squad, you’ll quickly come across the fact that this is the oldest squad we’ve had for a long time.

Ricky Ponting (35)
Michael Clarke (29)
Doug Bollinger (29)
Peter George (24)
Nathan Hauritz (29)
Josh Hazlewood (19)
Ben Hilfenhaus (27)
Phillip Hughes (21)
Michael Hussey (35)
Mitchell Johnson (29)
Simon Katich (35)
Marcus North (31)
Tim Paine (25)
Steven Smith (21)
Shane Watson (29)

Out of those, Hughes, Hazelwood, George and Smith didn’t play in either of the matches so it could be said that it was a reasonably old team that played.

2. Reliance on Under-Performing Players and basing selections on reputation
This would have to be the biggest bane in Australian Cricket at this point in time; the fact that when every series comes around, the same players are being picked, not based on performance but based on past deeds (or reputation as it’s known).

Marcus North – Either gets 100 or does nothing. More often than not, he does nothing.

Mitchell Johnson – He just cannot bloody bowl the ball accurately or consistently.

Michael Hussey – Has been very mediocre over the past 6 Test Series, averaging just 25 with the bat.

3. Captaincy succession
Is Michael Clarke really the captain in waiting? Based on Tuesday night’s abysmal one-day loss to Sri Lanka, absolutely not. If you have a team reeling at 8/107 you generally would expect that the game would be over. You wouldn’t expect a middle-order batsman and a tailender to go the slog and get a world record 9th wicket partnership of 139. Sadly that’s what happened and a large portion of the blame has to be attached to Clarke and his decisions. I mean, it all went wrong the moment he brought Johnson on to bowl. He got slogged and everyone else got slogged as a result. His field placings were poor and frankly, it was embarrassing to watch.

4. Bowlers unable to perform consistently
This would definitely be a huge bane with the likes of Mitchell Johnson unable to bowl consistently. Ever since they lost Troy Cooley as bowling coach, the bowling has gone to absolute shambles. During the one-day series it was disgusting to see Australia not even bothering to bowl at the stumps. They tried to bowl to a plan and get people out hooking or cutting or anything like that but if you can’t deliver that ball consistently, you’re going to get smashed. Australia were smashed and it doesn’t bode well for the Ashes series at all.

So what needs to be done to improve our fortunes

1. Change the look of the team
At the end of the Ashes series, we need to say to the likes of Ponting, Hussey and Katich “you’ve been brilliant for a long time but now we need to rebuild” and we need to replace them with performing younger players. Players like Callum Ferguson and Cameron White.

Also we need bowlers that can perform and bowl consistently. Seriously, Mitchell Johnson must be dropped immediately to find some form and consistency at state level or the Ashes series could get really ugly. Is Hauritz the answer to our spin woes? Christ, he barely spins the bloody ball and really, he’s not the answer for mine. Doherty would be a better option or give Steve Smith a chance to show what he’s really capable of.

2. Revamp the selectors
They’ve already looked at this by creating the role of a full-time selector (Greg Chappell) and this is already a good start but there’s a lot more that still needs to be done. They need all the selectors to be watching games and casting eyes on the future for the Australian team.

Having said that, they need to get rid of Andrew Hilditch and fast. He would have to be the worst selector I’ve ever come across and sometimes, I really don’t think he knows what he’s doing. The fact he’s still there under this new structure is an absolute indictment on Cricket Australia and he mus be removed ASAP.

3. Sack the coach
Yes, I know that I sound like the feral element of sports fan by demanding the sacking of a coach instead of supporting like true fans do but honestly, Tim Nielsen has been the worst coach for quite some time. Under his watch, we’re no longer the top nation in Test Cricket and probably no longer the number one nation in the one-day arena and I don’t see any way back from this. Yes, he’s led the team through a tough transition period but I don’t believe his results were worthy of a contract extension. That view has been further strengthened by recent woes and frankly he needs to shape up or ship out

4. Adjust the captaincy succession plan
Ponting has done an ok job under challenging circumstances but the widely held view that Michael Clarke will be the next captain is an absolute joke. As has been seen, Clarke just doesn’t cut it. That match that we threw after reducing them to 8/107 will be on Clarke’s watch forever and frankly, his form is nothing special either. Does he lead the team well? Does he have the respect of all the players? I’m not totally convinced on the answer to either question. Throwing up Marcus North as a potential captain, please, let’s get real here. Cameron White could be considered a possibility as well but we know he doesn’t bowl himself in the longer form of the game.

It is a challenging time for Australian Cricket and if we don’t put future plans in place today, we could find ourselves suffering a West Indies like decline and frankly, we’re better than that

It’s time to rebuild and give younger performing players a chance to show what they’re capable of and to be patient with them.

It’s time for Cricket Australia to stand up and show some leadership and investigate the issues I’ve outlined and make the changes that need to be made or risk public disillusion growing.

It’s up to those running the game to show why they’re getting paid the big dollars.

Let’s see some sort of rebuilding plan for the future and let’s see it now.

It's been a big couple of matchdays and we can safely say that 5 teams have confirmed a spot in the Round of 32.

Group A:

Matchday 3
Manchester City 3 - 1 Lech
Salzburg 1 - 1 Juventus

Matchday 4
Lech 3 - 1 Manchester City
Juventus 0 - 0 Salzburg

It's been a very strange couple of matchdays and the big surprise was Lech defeating Manchester City on Matchday 4. Having said that, Juventus' chances of making the Round of 32 are still alive despite 2 ordinary draws against the group whipping boys Salzburg. Juventus need to start picking up wins to stand a chance of making the next stage.

Group B:

Matchday 3
Atletico Madrid 3 - 0 Rosenborg
Aris 0 - 0 Leverkusen

Matchday 4
Rosenborg 1 - 2 Atletico Madrid
Leverkusen 1 - 0 Aris

A couple of matchdays ago I was genuinely fearful that Atletico Madrid wouldn't make the knockout rounds as they were playing some dreadful football but they've turned it right around with 2 very impressive wins over Rosenborg. Now favourites to qualify with Leverkusen for the knockout rounds so a sigh of relief can be heard in Madrid

Group C:

Matchday 3
Sporting Lisbon 5 - 1 Gent
Lille 1 - 0 Levski

Matchday 4
Gent 3 - 1 Sporting Lisbon
Levski 2 - 2 Lille

This group is still too close to call but we can say that Sporting Lisbon will be in the knockout rounds. They're scoring the most goals and playing some really good football. Their loss to Gent though has really complicated the battle for 2nd place in the group as Gent, Levski and Lille are seperated by just 1 point (with Lille in 2nd). The battle for 2nd will be crucial but there's still a couple of matches to go.

Group D:

Matchday 3
Villarreal 1 - 0 PAOK
Dinamo Zagreb 0 - 0 Club Brugge

Matchday 4
PAOK 1 - 0 Villarreal
Club Brugge 0 - 2 Dinamo Zagreb

These 2 matchdays were known as the Group of Snooze as not a lot of action occured. The big shock occured on Matchday 4 with PAOK knocking off Villarreal and taking top spot in the group. Club Brugge are pretty well eliminated but the top 3 are seperated by just 1 point and with the low scoring nature of the group, the odd goal could be enough to send a team through to the knockout rounds

Group E:

Matchday 3
Sheriff 0 - 1 BATE
AZ 1 - 2 Dynamo Kiev

Matchday 4
BATE 3 - 1 Sheriff
Dynamo Kiev 2 - 0 AZ

This group was looking competitive but with BATE and Dynamo Kiev winning both on Matchday 3 and Matchday 4, this group is looking pretty close to being sealed. In any event, BATE are through to the knockout stages for the first time ever and barring an absolute collapse, Kiev will be joining them

Group F:

Matchday 3
Palermo 0 - 3 CSKA Moscow
Sparta Prague 3 - 3 Lausanne

Matchday 4
CSKA Moscow 3 - 1 Palermo
Lausanne 1 - 3 Sparta Prague

Two very high scoring matchdays and with Sparta Prague taking 4 points off Lausanne and CSKA Moscow doing the double over a defensively frail Palermo, this group is also looking pretty close to sealed barring an absolute collapse. CSKA Moscow are definately through and are looking very impressive thus far scoring 12 goals in 4 games and conceding just 1 goal. Sparta Prague despite looking awful in defence at times, should join them in the knockout rounds

Group G:

Matchday 3
Zenit 2 - 0 Hadjuk Split
Anderlecht 3 - 0 AEK

Matchday 4
Hadjuk Split 2 - 3 Zenit
AEK 1 - 1 Anderlecht

Zenit St Petersburg have already qualified for the Round of 32 but the second spot from this group is between the remaining teams. Anderlecht hold second spot on 4 points, AEK are third also on 4 points and Hadjuk Split are last on 3 points. This is way too close to call and really, it's hard to tell who'll do enough to get the spot. Anderlecht have the advantage in that they knocked off AEK and if they get a positive result against Hadjuk Split, they could very well be there in the knockouts.

Group H:

Matchday 3
Young Boys 4 - 2 OB
Stuttgart 1 - 0 Getafe

Matchday 4
OB 2 - 0 Young Boys
Getafe 0 - 3 Stuttgart

Stuttgart have qualified for the knockout rounds after doing the double over Getafe but second spot is still in doubt. Young Boys have the advantage in that they have a better goal difference than the other teams but in a group of no draws, goal difference and head to head could prove to be the deciding factor in the battle for 2nd place.

Group I:

Matchday 3
Metalist 2 - 1 Sampdoria
Debrecen 1 - 2 PSV

Matchday 4
Sampdoria 0 - 0 Metalist
PSV 3 - 0 Debrecen

PSV are just about there for the knockout rounds after doing the double over whipping boys Debrecen. Metalist have taken the advantage over Sampdoria though by taking 4 points off them over the past 2 matchdays. With both Metalist and Sampdoria to face the other 2 teams, it's going to go down to what they can achieve against PSV. Somehow I'm thinking that Metalist will go through but stranger things have happened.

Group J:

Matchday 3
Borussia Dortmund 1 - 1 PSG
Karpaty 0 - 1 Sevilla

Matchday 4
PSG 0 - 0 Borussia Dortmund
Sevilla 4 - 0 Karpaty

Sevilla are just about there in this group after doing the double over Karpaty while PSG and Borussia Dortmund did themselves no favour cancelling each other out over the 2 games. PSG have the advantage, being undefeated and you'd think that they should qualify along with Sevilla for the knockout rounds but they are renowned for being flaky at times so it should be good to see what they can achieve against Sevilla.

Group K:

Matchday 3
Utrecht 1 - 1 Steaua
Napoli 0 - 0 Liverpool

Matchday 4
Steaua 3 - 1 Utrecht
Liverpool 3 - 1 Napoli

Despite their domestic woes, Liverpool have been playing very impressive in Europe and to take 4 points off Napoli including a draw at the intimidating San Paolo Stadium is mighty impressive. They can secure a spot in the knockout rounds with a win on Matchday 5. Meanwhile, the other 3 teams are fighting it out for that second spot and none of the teams have been truely convincing. That being said, Steaua's win over Utrecht could be very crucial in the battle for second.

Group L:

Matchday 3
CSKA Sofia 0 - 2 Rapid Vienna
Besiktas 1 - 3 Porto

Matchday 4
Rapid Vienna 1 - 2 CSKA Sofia
Porto 1 - 1 Besiktas

With both Rapid Vienna and CSKA Sofia securing a victory over each other, thus cancelling each others performance out, Porto and Besiktas are the favourites to qualify. Porto have in fact already qualified and a win on Matchday 5 will see Besikats join them.

So after all that, the stats are as follows

Matchday 3
Goals: 59
Average goals per match: 2.46

Matchday 4
Goals: 65
Average goals per match: 2.71

With 5 teams qualified and a host of teams potentially able to secure their spots in the knockout rounds, Matchday 5 will promise to be a thrilling time played over 2 days

So ends the review of Matchdays 3 and 4

on Arsenal Prepared To Submit €40m Bid For Mauro Zarate

I don't think Arsene Wenger would part with that sort of money considering he's all about developing the youth and making the occasional foray into the market looking for a bargin. It's a pity because despite Arsenal's youth doing well, they lack that world class star (excluding Fabregas) needed to take them to the next level
