I can't tell you how many times I have seen compulsive buying when it comes to pets, especially the exotic ones. Many have no clues what they are getting themselves into and it usually ends in disaster. I myself am guilty of compulsive pet buying and learned my lesson.
People who buy or acquire pets without researching them will end up with a dead pet or a pet that is out-of-control. Many by dogs without researching the breeds or how to train them. Some acquire cats and eventually let them reproduce and become destructive. They buy tropical fish that may not be compatible. Reptiles and amphibians may be the most discarded acquired pets because the pet owner doesn't research his animals.
BEFORE YOU ACQUIRE ANY PET DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST
otherwise you are asking for trouble. I've seen people buying reptiles like boas, and eventually calling for help when the snake turns dangerous and escapes. I've seen a person buy a chameleon and a hot-rock as per the advice of the pet shop employee. Pet shop employees are more interested in the sale rather than animal care and husbandry. You are forewarned!
Chameleons are arboreal and a hot-rock is useless. A ceramic bulb is a better choice. This is what I mean by doing your homework and researching the animal before you decide to bring one home as a pet.
Dogs and cats come in a variety of colors and breeds. Research needs to be done before you buy a siamese, persian , or even a tabby cat. Same goes with shepherds, pointers, guard dogs, etc., pure-bred or mutts!
Birds are a special topic. Finches, parakeets, canaries, parrots, falcons, magpies, etc. Bird pets must be researched extensively.
I've kept many animals as pets. From common domestic animals to the truly exotic ones, for my life it has been a trial and error in pet keeping and husbandry. My first pet was a goldfish that was won at a carnival and lived for three years...defying the three day survival expectation of carnival games goldfish. I've had cats, dogs, herpetiles(reptile and amphibian pets), birds, mammals, fish, insects, mollusks, etc.
I suggest you do your homework before you acquire a pet. I can't stress this enough. Don't rely on a pet shop to give you reliable advice on a pet. They are looking for a sale more so than your interests. Look at what the expense and care of what such pets is before assuming it won't cost much. Research both pros and cons on keeping such a pet. Is the choice pet right for you?
