Schoolies Week

Who knows where this incredbile week - or weeks - came from. I know I'm long in the tooth, but we had neither the money, the inspiration, nor the places to go that current school leavers have.
The Queensland Gold Coast is one of the popular venues for these weeks of youth invasions, where young school leavers treat the time as a rite of passage. Many drink, and drink too much, many lose their virginity, and other dabble in drugs for the first time.
As well unsavoury characters appear and take advantage of young women in particular whose naivity can lead them into trouble.
Parents throughout Australia are quaking in their boots, but many fund these activities in a way that I find to be a bit mindboggling. Some of these young people have access to large amounts of money, the key to fabulous units, and a feeling of gay abandon.
I just hope that those who venture to the Gold Coast, or any of the other venues around Australia for this rite of passage, do enjoy the experience and behave like young ladies and gentlemen and that few, if any, return, having their whole life plans messed up by some stupid event.
