Saving a Life - Stroke

April 20th 2009 08:19
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend's friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .....she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this....

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S.... Ask the individual to SMILE.
T..... Ask the person to TALKand SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, i.e.. It is sunny out today)
R ....Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 000 immediately and describe the symptomsto the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Cool stuff Janet - I just hope you never have to use the info but it's another good thing to add to the brain.

And I completely forgot to thank Carrie my friend for sending it to me. Thanks Carrie.

Hi Jason,

I have to agree in light of my own recent experience, this is good information.

I hope I don*t have a relapse or another one more severe than the last, but it is good for the people around me to know to ask me to stick out my tongue. As I said, for me the noticeable sign was that one side of my face had fallen, but there it is, the family hardly noticed that either, but luckily I was smiling and thank God, still am.

I shall pass this information on to my children.

Thank you.

Lilla ..

Ps I just love that first picture!

Great advice Jason. The signs can be so easy to miss or mistake for something else. I have not had a stroke as such but have had a number of TIAs (Transient Ischemic Attacks) which are classed as mini strokes. I was unaware at the time that I had had them. They were picked up in an MRI.

It's a little scary because I guess it puts me at greater risks of stroke. At least my friends and family have signs that they can look for if they think I'm acting odder than usual

Hey Lilla - It never entered my mind posting this about your experience.
Do you go for regular tests/ MRI's or do you just have to take it easy and have blood thinning meds?
It is so good that you have a positive outcome to this. There must be so many who do not have and even more people that feel odd but decide to wait until it's serious which in this situation could be fatal.
And glad your kids can now give you grief and make you stick out your tongue every hour or so
That picture is striking isn't it - I got it from Google Images when I typed in "brain".

Cheryl - holy crap - it sounds scary, it has initials. Sorry to hear that but glad you is around to banter and comment and provide some super interesting articles and that you have not had anything more serious. Do you also have regular checks to check for more serious possibilities? Just tell all your friends to make you stick your tongue out regularly. In every photo I am pretty much ever in I stick my tongue out so all my friends know the shape of it - they would freak out if it came out a different shape. Stay safe and healthy!

Thanks for the comment ladies - look after yourselves.
