Dissatisfaction for Beginners

February 23rd 2008 04:06
"Why can't I have a copy of all your notes?" she asked, poking a long bony finger at my folder.
This morning I taught a 3 hour workshop in Personal Astrology. My main form of income comes from teaching at Neighbourhood and Community Houses in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. I teach things like palmistry, astrology, tarot, and creative writing.
Students pay a nominal fee to attend. In this case, $20 for 3 hours. Not bad really. All students received 10 pages of student notes, and were free to make whatever notes they wished as I spoke.
This woman was not happy, no matter how often she interrupted and asked questions about her personal astrology chart. She was not interested in anyone else, nor did she wish my attention anywhere but on her.

Finally, after three hours, she said she was mightily dissatisfied. She wanted a copy of all my teaching notes. I said no. She threw a large tantrum when I said my notes were my intellectual property.
I strongly suspect a lot of Fire in her chart. In fact, I know there was a lot of Fire in her chart, because I had to look at her chart many, many times.
I am a tolerant person. My job involves bringing together disparate groups of people and keeping their attention for several hours. I am skilled at handling 'difficult people'.
But this woman..... I suppose it IS against the law to shoot her.
I pray she doesn't turn up in my Palmistry workshop next month.
For $20 she sure wanted a lot.

Homeless

February 21st 2008 06:31
I'm guilty of many assumptions, some of them about homeless people. I assumed they were ill-educated, most likely drunks or drug addicts, runaways.
Not so. I am about to become homeless, it seems, in suburban Australia.
My rent increased so much that I can no longer pay it. Due to illness over the past six months, I have been unable to work very much. My income is low. I don't have maxed out credit cards.
I do have a disabled son, who, alas, will have to be consigned to the full-time care of his father.
I cannot afford any of the rents being asked for in property-boom Melbourne.

No one I know seems to have a spare room I can stay in. And all the local charities are maxed out helping others. I have gone to my local Member of Parliament, to no avail.
I am well-educated. I have a degree, and various other diplomas. I am resuming work, but it's too little, too late. My wages will go to the upkeep of my household belongings in storage.
I am astonished to find myself in this situation. I manage money well, when I have it.
And yet, come March 10th, I am to be out of this house, with nowhere to go.
How to come to terms with this?
Friends tell me that the universe will provide. I hope it provides sooner rather than later.

The weather

February 19th 2008 20:01
What a rotten night's sleep. Do the over-the-back-fence neighbours never sleep when it's hot? Must they sit up till all hours, talking loudly in Chinese? Must some member of the household receive text messages on their cell phone with the familiar 'blep blep' noise to alert them to the message?
The worst part was the heat, though. Hottest night for a quite a while, and that says something, considering it's Melbourne and February. It always heats up in time for the kids to go back to school and swelter in school uniforms and covered shoes.
Scientists say that if a butterfly in China flaps it's wings, there will be tornadoes in Queensland.
Well, the Chinese say they are going to control the weather for the Beijing Olympics; that they have already been experimenting with the weather, to ensure it doesn't rain for the opening ceremony.
That explains last night. Weather experiments in China - drought and my crappy night's sleep in Melbourne.
Knock it off, guys, or I'll have a local witch I know do some weather magic. One little lunar eclipse here, and you'll be cast into darkness for the entire Games.
Here's to a better night's sleep tonight.

Monday night tv

February 19th 2008 00:22
"Good News Week" aired on Channel 10 last night, after some years' absence. The panelists looked uncomfortable and somewhat frantic, and the host's jaw was tensed as though he didn't want to be there, but his mortgage was forcing him to.
Many of the jokes were try-hard. I know GNW is meant to be edgy and outrageous. I know I wasn't feeling my best last night. But I think I cracked a smile a couple of times, but otherwise sat there watching the aggressive humour style of Paul McDermott and thinking: "This isn't a school yard, sunshine".
Ho hum. I'm willing to tune in again in a few weeks and see if the show is any more relaxed, but in the meantime, I shall turn to my bookcases and sink into a few well-chosen novels. But don't go thinking that I'm all literary and my first choice will be 'Pride and Prejudice' or a Peter Carey tome. I'm as trashy as the next person. I'm thinking a good science fiction novel, or even 'The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco

Saying Sorry

February 18th 2008 03:01
So Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has said 'Sorry' to the Aboriginal People, and to the 'stolen generation' in particular. I commend him, because John Howard wouldn't do it. However, it's been my experience that the word 'sorry' doesn't mean a thing.
In the last week I've had the following personal 'Sorries':
"I know that I said you could come live with me and we'd be husband and wife. I know that we've been seeing each other for ten years. I know that you'd partially moved in already. But I just can't do it. Sorry
