One Luxxe Bentley

July 5th 2010 21:13
Cody Johnson has always loved to perform and be around lots of people from all walks of life, but as Luxxe Bentley, he is able to show the world a different side of himself, and show others that he is comfortable in his own skin, and in a pair of stilettos.
Luxxe Bentley is the current reigning Miss Gay Oklahoma Charity. She has been present at OKC Pride multiple years, and showcases her singing and dancing talents at the Boom Room in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Luxxe combines vivacity and a true love of people in her performances. She chooses music that speaks a message, and calls upon many influences from lesser known artists to inspire her.
Bentley says that when she was first starting out, she received lots of good advice from other performers. Without them, she says she might not be where she is today. Bentley prides herself on being an example to those outside of the gay community.
"I don't just tell people I meet that I do drag. I let them get to know me, as me, and then I introduce them to Luxxe. That way they see, oh he's gay, but he's not trying to hit on me or be weird around me. I'm me, and I perform in an art that some see as sexy, funny, entertaining..."
Using his people skills and zeal for life, Cody Johnson has made Luxxe come alive, and helped others understand that beauty exists in everyone.

"I Do This For My Girls."

June 16th 2010 20:54
Christina Morris, 23, is a role model. Morris, a military wife and mother to two young girls, has started her own business from nothing and considers herself a designer - and rightly so. Her designs showcase a fresh perspective on beadwork with whimsical twists that display her elegant and regal style. On Facebook alone she has over 200 fans, not counting her daily customer base or call-in orders. Morris believes in letting herself be inspired by her surroundings and by natural stones and beads.
"I pick what I like and what I think it beautiful. Then, I rework the materials until I get them perfect. The beads I choose are ones that I think are beautiful or interesting. I like using rocks as well- especially natural ones. Basically, I design around the stone itself. I don't sketch beforehand."
For Morris, this carefree way of design works. Her designs are imaginative and always stay true to the materials used. She combines color with ambition and isn't afraid to use it. She shows no fear in using larger stones, or unique stones. Each piece is a work of art unto itself, and shows a keen sense of style.
Morris developed this sense of style while she was attending a hobby group with several other military wives.
"There are a group (of military wives) that meet and make jewelry. I learned to bead with them, and loved it so much that I continued to do so in my spare time, then I decided to turn it into a career - one that I could do and still spend time with my girls."
Indeed, Morris is very dedicated to showing her daughters what is possible when you follow your dreams. While she never obtained a college degree, Morris believes that anything is possible.
""I want my daughters to see that I have accomplished so much without a degree, and that they can do whatever they set their minds to... but they are going to college!"
Morris also consults with her husband about business. In fact, the name, Imperial Elements comes from her husband's love for Star Wars, one that she shares.
"Our house is very much a Star Wars home, and my husband and I always said that if either of us ever had a business then "Imperial Elements" had to be the name we used."
Christina Morris shows dedication to her family and her own design aesthetic with her designs. Morris is a unique designer with a penchant for color, and this journalist looks forward to seeing more of her in the future.

Hannah Minson Keel, 22, is a photographer based out of Moore, looking to help those that want a sentimental touch to their photographs, and helping those that want to break into the industry, get a leg up. It is Keel's mission to serve the public that cannot afford to have expensive photographers, and to help those that are in the hands of mass portrait studios, to gain the pictures they deserve. "I want to use it (photography) to be of service to other people - friends, people on a budget - basically I want to use it to be a blessing." Keel has done several fashion shoots for local models as test shots, but she says she is more of an "everybody photographer" than strictly a fashion photographer.
Indeed, Keel is very focused on giving to her community. She is a pre-med student during the day - planning on becoming an OBGYN -, and comes home nightly to take care of her two children, Briar and Silas. Photography began as a hobby, and now, she has realized how much it matters to others to have something tangible of a special memory. "Everybody deserves to have something special to hang on their wall." Indeed she has recently embarked on a photography journey of her own; 365 Days of Photos is a journey with Keel through the lens of her camera on what she sees as memorable and beautiful, from everyday objects to her family.
Keel's work in photography and her interest in medicine have led her to an interesting discovery. A group of volunteer photographers work in the newborn nurseries and are dedicated to photographing the miscarried children, and the children that have passed away shortly after birth. These photographers work so that the families may have a memorial portrait of the baby they have lost. Keel says that she wants to help with this mission,"I want to help the healing process. I know that losing a baby is the worst kind of pain. I would love to be a part of something like that to help other parents along in the healing process through my photography."
Whether it is a model, or a baby, or a just engaged couple, Keel proves that everyone can be beautiful when a true artist with a compassionate heart is behind the lens.

Spring 2010 Trend Watch

March 11th 2010 02:49
Ooookay, so here are the predictions, gathered from such illustrious magazines like Vogue, and interpreted by me, and by what I've seen people wearing. Hear we go.

For the Ladies:

1. Graphic prints blended with animal prints. These are coming in, in all colors- most notably the peacock print and color mix seen lately in knee length sundresses. Honestly, I would recommend pairing this print with either a very understated denim, trouser, or wear it in a dress. Don't over accessorize, because if you are wearing a print this major, it can wear you. Think simple heel or sandal, and maybe a cuff.

2. Buttery Tan Leather jackets. I'm loving the motorcycle cut, and saw it recently on a girl in this color. Target is selling one for around $30. The workmanship looks worth it.

3. Black eyelet dresses and tops. They are in, just be careful, and make sure you're one of the few that can wear black close to the face. Quick test: Hold up a color swatch to your face, if you tend to look purple or green, then it would be best to divide it up from your face with a chunky necklace in a color more suited to your tone. This way, you can wear black and look your best.

4. BOLD Purple. I've been seeing it everywhere- even in silk evening pants, paired with black blouses. Make sure if you decide to take that risk, you WEAR it.

5. Pale, floaty cottonesque fabrics like in a gray blue or a dusty pink. It sounds typical for Spring, but Hermes for example, is revolutionizing these colors and making them more masculine- appropriate for men and women.

6. Polka dots with white backgrounds and tiny black dots.

7. Poppy Red

8. Grecian draped floor length gowns in Ecru.

9. Snakeskin Strappy Sandal Heels: Dillards has a line by Calvin Klein that is superb and can be worn with most of the trends listed above.

10. Textured bags. The trend for bags this season tends to be, the more texture (whether it be pilling, ruching, snakeskin, etc.) the better the bag.

For the Men:

1. Cotton or chambray shirts in pale blues, and dusty pink.

2. Poppy Red Dress Shirts. Just BE CAREFUL. Only men with darker complexions should try this. Otherwise, you come off looking like a man dancer. Trust me, don't go there.

3. Ecru linen trousers. Classic, and look beautiful. When paired with a pale colored dress shirt, it's an updated look on "Easter Sunday" and so chic right now.

4. Shorter hair on men. It's clean cut and classic. This season, for the men, it's all about class and sophistication.

5. Cotton Flatcaps in lighter colors. Just don't get cheesy with the Easter Egg colors.

6. Boat shoes. I know, you're going to tell me that only Frat Boys wear this. Well, actually a canvas boat shoe can be attractive when worn correctly. Just don't get too overzealous perpetuating the yuppy myth.

7. Lighter colored swim trunks. Sky blue is going to be HUGE this season.

8. Light fabrics cut into Military Coat Styles. This trend takes a classic cut- the Military Coat- and puts it into a wearable fabric that can be worn during warmer months, and most are waterproof- so they make a perfect alternative on a rainy day.

9. Teeny check patterns- especially in blazers.

10. Gray and Black thin crew neck t-shirts.

And there you have it everyone. Spring Trends for 2010!!!! Have fun shopping!

The Best and Worst of the Oscars

March 9th 2010 02:58
It's that time of the year again. The time when we all sit back and heckle celebrities on their choice of clothing for the Academy Awards. This journalist laments style choices chosen by those that can afford to dress well (and anyone that was with me last night during the Red Carpet coverage can attest to my strong feelings on this matter). What are we looking forward to? Lots of shiny gowns, too tight bodices, one beauty pageant mishap, and a loofah sponge come to life. We begin with the worst (because we can only go up from here).

THE WORST- in no particular order

Waders, Gloves, and Stilettos

Elizabeth Maupin

Some might think this hodgepodge of items is a weird, and slightly quirky fashion statement, but for Elizabeth Maupin, 22, it’s all in a days work. Maupin, a recent graduate of the University of Oklahoma, possesses a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Zoology and a minor in Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Environment. Maupin’s day - to - day work list is admirable. She has applied for multiple research fellowships in the surrounding states, she works at Camp Bowwow (a local dog boarding facility) during the day, trains animals (including her rat, Stumpy Sutton – whom she rescued while at a wildlife research internship), and occasionally puts in time as an educator for wildlife programs. So what does she have to do with fashion? She’s a model.
That’s right, a model. Maupin is breaking all barriers and stereotypes with her work. Instead of being the traditional Oklahoma model (blonde hair, large breasts, orange-tanned skin), Maupin stands at a statuesque 5.10” and is slender with a carriage like that of a prima ballerina. She purposefully keeps her skin pale, and is known for her hair – waist length, dark brown, curls. Maupin thinks of modeling as a way to help herself and gain people skills, while promoting designers, and helping those in need

Hearts, Poppies, and Imagination

February 13th 2010 02:47
All of these elements give Rebekah Martinez, 21, inspiration in her jewelry collection. A student at the Rhode Island School of Design, Martinez credits her desire to go into jewelry design from a jewelry class she took during high school.
“It took a while for me to decide what I wanted to do in life, but I always knew it was to have something to do with art. It wasn't until my senior year of high school when I took a jewelry class that I decided. I enjoyed the medium and the process, but the end result was even better. I could wear it!”
Indeed, Martinez’s pieces speak of functionality and imagination. While she does specialize in larger more ornate pieces – such as Egyptian-style silver collars – Martinez makes pieces that can be worn as day wear, and also be worn as evening wear. Cocktail rings, charm necklaces, collars, earrings, and hair ornaments are just a few of the items you can find in her collection, in a variety of metals and mediums

The Trends of the Month

February 1st 2010 03:51
It's February, and if you are living anywhere in the northern hemisphere, chances are you are super cold right now. Since fashion is so transient, I'm going to be focusing on a month by month trend watch, rather than a six month at a time disaster. This way, you will be getting the latest news, at the appropriate time.

1. I'm liking purple for this month. It's romantic and powerful. I'd wear it in a scarf or a shoe. Hint's of color- no one wants to look like a Teletubby

The Do's and Dont's of Leggings!!!!

January 26th 2010 22:00
Since I have been seeing a lot of faux pas lately, and I am big on comfort, I've decided to write the general do's and dont's of leggings!!!

DO: embrace the dark colors: Victoria's Secret has some amazing bark, black, heather gray, and chocolate colored leggings (in lots of sizes) that are comfortable, durable, and look fantastic with bright or deep colors
