Sarcasm

Sarcasm is usually lost on the wonderful yet shameless world of the interwebs. Apparently when you say I heart Hitler people actually believe you express strong uncontrollable feelings for a dead man who not single-handedly killed millions (but that is for another day). Apparently saying dead baby jokes are hilarious in a sarcastic tone is also lost on the interwebs although they are hilarious but you have to know your crowd. Its a shame really, sarcasm is the best thing that ever happened to human communication. Its what separates us from monkeys and other beastly creatures. No seriously think about it, can your dog make an off-hand comment and roll his eyes? No (not even Lassie)? In this day and age when no one communicates via human contact anymore I always seem to be in trouble as one sarcastic person I am. I'm offending people left, right and centre. They call me crude, rude, shameless, no sympathy or empathy or compassion, racist, sexist, meat eater, or dear I say it, a feminist! Although in reality I'm all those things and many more but I don't want the rest of the world knowing how I am really like so when I make an off-hand comment like, "its because your ugly and black and that is why I chose the other guy" I can quickly and hopefully unsuspectingly cover my tracks (cue fake laugh) " I was being sarcastic". And all involved laugh and nod in agreement as if I made a really hilarious joke (obviously not as funny as dead baby jokes). Using the same example if I were to write that on an email I would probably get an angry email claiming that I'm shallow and racist and this is not the last time I'm going to hear from them.
Sarcasm in my unbiased opinion is the intellect's insult although many would argue that sarcasm is usually used by angst teenagers against their parents and it is universally agreed upon that a teenager is usually not considered an intellect by any means. You can use as many profanities that comes to mind and yet it will not have the same effect as one sarcastic comment. Actually using profanities has a bad baring on you but one sharp sarcastic comment and you got your unfortunate victim ruminating and deeply offended so much so that he or she may not have a comeback. While on the other hand calling them names is forgettable and lets face it easy to conjure up a comeback. So my advice? To seem educated and somewhat intelligent go with the sarcastic comment (emphasis on the "to seem").
But this of course by no means addresses the problem of sarcasm being lost on the interwebs. And what am I to do?! Without sarcasm I cannot simply be that pseudo-intellect that i constantly strive to be! Oh the dilemma (cue dramatic music). In a pit of despair as I crawl up in a foetal position awaiting my slow demise and there some little known genius had discovered the solution to my woes. As simple it may be but makes the biggest of differences I present the ~. Now I can write, "~Oh you're so intelligent and not all pretentious~" or "~I heart Hitler~" or well you get my drift. Although not as good as spoken sarcasm it does it job for now which means no more abusive emails for me (please).
