Om Shanti Om is the film to watch

March 27th 2008 13:05
OM SHANTI OM – SHAHRUKH’S BEST FILM SINCE VEER ZAARA AND SWADES. 2004 WAS A GOOD YEAR FOR SHAHRUKH AS HIS FILMS CONTAINED SOLID NARRITIVE STRUCTURE AND WERE GENERALLY ADDICTIVE. SO I'M HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT 2007 WAS SUCCESSFUL WITH OM SHANTI OM AND CHAK DE INDIA (THE FILM SHAHRUKH FILMED IN AUSTRALIA), ESPECIALLY OM SHANTI OM. IT HAS A REINCARNATION THEME ATTACHED TO IT - THE 1970S ERA AND THE PRESENT ERA. WITH STARS FROM ACROSS THE ERAS GUEST STARRING IN THE BAS DEEWANAGI HAI SONG, YOU'LL BE PLAYING 'SPOT THE STAR' THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SONG. I HAD HOPED 90'S STARS RAVEENA TANDON (GREAT CHEMISTRY IN 1995’S ZAMAANA DEWAANA), MAMTA KULKARNI, AND POOJA BHATT WOULD STRUT THEIR STUFF IN THE SONG BUT FANS GOT TO MISS OUT ON THEIR PRESENSE.
BEST SONGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN OSM (OM SHANTI OM) IS DASTAAN E OM SHANTI OM AND DARD-E-DISCO. DASTAAN E OM SHANTI OM HAS A CLASSICAL AND ORCHESTRA THEME TO IT AND IS SIMILAR TO THE HAMLET SCENE IN WHICH OM KAPOOR IS GETTING THE MURDER SCENE PLAYED OUT IN THE SONG (JUST LIKE HAMLET DID WHEN GETTING ACTORS TO ACT OUT HIS FATHER'S MURDER SCENE IN THE PLAY TO WHICH HIS UNCLE FREAKS OUT). YOUTUBE THE SONG AND HAVE A LOOK AT THE SUPERBLY CHOREOGRAHED VIDEO –IT IS BREATHTAKING.
SHAHRUKH PLAYS HIS ROLE PERFECTLY, AS DOES KIRAN KHER AND ARJUN RAMPUL. ARJUN HAS COME A LONG WAY– HIS ACTING HAS STRENGTHENED IN OSO AND PLAYS HIS ROLE CONVINCINGLY. NEWCOMER DEEPIKA ADDS THE ICING TO THE CAKE AND THE ACTOR PLAYING PAPPU APPEARS TO HAVE A PROMISING ACTING CAREER IN FRONT OF HIM.
OUT OF A SCORE OF 10, I GIVE OSM A 9. WATCH OSM FOR THE STORY, WATCH OSM FOR THE SONGS, WATCH OSM FOR SRK’S ABS, AND FINALLY- WATCH OSO TO ADD THAT MUCH NEEDED MASALA INTO YOUR DAY.

The late Divya Bharati starred in excellent films. Dil Aashna hai, dil ka kya kasoor, geet, vishwatma, and deewana were great flicks to watch and she was one of the most beautiful heroines of the time. I miss her films, she was the rose bud of the screen. And Mamta Kulkarni used to star in allot of films yet hasn't made a film since 2002, i wonder why she chose to quit acting? Pooja Bhatt also used to star in many films but im not sure if shes officiall quit acting, but is now a movie producer or director with her family's film company. Kajol's films were really cool, starring in romantic films alongside Shahrukh and how they made good films together! I miss those days, she doesn't act much anymore but i can't wait for the day when she stars with ShahRukh Khan again. Juhi Chawla also starred in allot of films back then but doesn't star much in films anymore, she made great films back in the days. The 90's were full of good hindi films and still, i'll always wonder what Mamta and Pooja is doing now that she hasn't acted in years? What happened to the 90's actors/actresses who were popular? Where are they now?
Karisma Kapoor made her debut in the 90s and grew up to become an elegant woman, her sister Kareena entered the industry in 2000 and has become one of the most popular actresses of the 2000's.
Wouldn't it be great to have 1990's type of Bollywood films created in today's time?

Deewana film review

March 21st 2008 02:14
By now, you will have assumed that my favourite actor is ShahRukh Khan. Indeed he is, as he is a marvelous actor who puts 100% into his acting roles. With a career spanning from 1992 to present, he has contributed to an array of great films. The next film review will be on his debut film Deewana (translation: crazy). With a youth centred plot, the target audience for this film is 15-25 years old.

Deewana is a 1992 production starring the late Divya Bharati, Rishi Kapoor, and ShahRukh Khan. Kajal (Divya Bharati) is obsessed with her favourite idol, the ageing Ravi (Rishi Kapoor). Upon meeting, they fall in love and pursue their feelings into a loving marriage. Cutting their happiness short is a tragedy, and Kajal is left to pick up the broken pieces of her life. A man ready to fill her life with much needed radience is Raju (ShahRukh). Raju, upon meeting Kajal, is smitten by the young woman and does much to pursure her only to receive rejction in return. He becomes obsessed and mad due to his love for Kajal, and thinks about her nonstop. With honourable intentions, youthful Raju does all that he can to win her heart. Will Kajal ever accept Raju as a lover?

Deewana, available in subtitles at participating stores.

Note: On an unrelated note, i recommend readers to watch a historical film - ShahRukh's 2001 film 'Asoka' starring the dazzling Kareena Kapoor which is based on a true story.

Duplicate

Duplicate is a film which, after talking to some of my friends, wasn't the most liked film at the time. Are they serious? I loved this film.
Laced with slap stick comedy and an interesting plot, the 1998 production otherwise known as Duplicate is a comedy which stars bollywood beauties Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bendre.

Darr - movie

March 21st 2008 00:56
One of the earliest bollywood movies i have watched is thriller Darr (translation: Fear). Darr is a bollywood film created in 1993, starring bollywood superstar ShahRukh Khan (he’s been in the industry for 16 years). Starring besides ShahRukh is breathtaking beauty Juhi Chawla. Darr is a 'must watch' film. It contains masala, suspense, suprise, and twists making the viewer wanting more. Shahrukh plays the role of Rahul, whos obsessed with an old time college student Kiran. Kiran is engaged to sunny but that doesn't stop Rahul's attempts to make Kiran his. Rahul stalks Kiran to the point of insanity while beefy marine Suniel (Sunny Deol) does all he can to protect his damsel in distress. Rahul’s psychotic mind is displayed to the viewers as they are taken on the journey from Kiran’s first encounter with the stalker (with phonecalls) to the extent of making her life a living misery. ShahRukh Khan plays his role with charisma and convincing as he plays the disturbed wannabe lover. Ladies will feel more drawn to the sexy stalker due to that charisma. Juhi Chawla plays the role of Kiran with such innocence, charm, and authenticy that viewers empathise with her. And Sunny does his best playing the macho lover filled with wit and testosterone levels so high that he could respresent the marine team (no need for more members)! Anupam Kher plays Kiran’s brother (the dad from bend it like beckham) but the downside of his character is the constant obsession with cricket which dominate most of his dialogue and doesn’t fit in with the film’s theme.
The movie song tracks are excellent, with catchy songs such as Tu Mere samne and jadoo teri nazar. The holi song displays Rahul’s state of mind, as he furiously plays the drums while watching Kiran dance. Bollywood fans, especially Shahrukh fans, will enjoy watching Darr, a film from his early film career. Darr is available with subtitles

Darr is a really good film, it's a good watch and one of his early career films. I personally believe it could be considered a classic as it's a film that'll last through time and appeal to all generations.
Khan hasn't been in trouble with the law.

Shahrukh Khan isn't in every Bollywood film, but tends to star in big budget mainstream cinema films that are usually successful. He has done allot of films though, i'm estimating around at least 25 films. Although usually found in mainstream cinema, he completed an art film in 1992 called Maya Memsaab (miss maya). I haven't watched the film yet as it's hard to find in stores.
His films from the 1990's are my favourites as they came in different genres.
