Wow, October was my last post. My poor neglected blog ... I promise to write more next year!!

Well here we are again, as John Lennon says ".Another year over, a new one just begun" or about to begin in this case. I have to make something clear here - I don't like New Year. You won't find me woo wooing come 12 on New Year's Eve or doing Auld Lang Syne in the street with the neighbours. Nope not me. I will be sitting in, with a glass of something, probably watching Jool's Holland and eating something.(before I spend a month regretting it and going all nil by mouth) Why? Well, we are all another year older, (albeit in most cases another year wiser) - New Year means a long wait to summer, and warm days, being skint and waiting for pay day and all the sparkling lights and glitter of the month of December are taken down and put away for another year - to me January seems just dull, wet, cold and well downright grey. Also if your year has been great, you don't want it to end, and if it has been, well, not so good (we have all had them) all you really want to do is move on and forget it - putting two fingers up to it and saying off you go.

The only thing I really like about New Year is the programmes on telly that review what's gone on in the last year and so I am going to do my own little review - obviously though from a "Sam Perspective". It will be a more of a what I liked/thought was good in 2010.

TV: This year the telly was pretty drab - but there were a few notible mentions

B]Lost Series Finale : I am not sure how many people actually watched Lost though the whole series, I did, but I can see why into series three people could have got a bit bored and give up on it. As for the actual last series and the finale: People fell into two camps with the end, either they wanted the whole Lost experience explaining from start to finish (which in bits it did but not for the compleitist) and they actually hated the end. Or as me, found it really sad, cried buckets, mainly due to Vincent a golden Labrador stealing the scene and felt satisfied with the end. I bought series one to watch from the begining ... I honestly don't think it was ever meant to be understood
Jack and Vincent sniff

Glee: : Oh my where to begin.. at the start of January, I noticed TV adverts for this show and thought I would give it a whirl. Two episodes were screened one after the other and I fell in love. Finn, Rachel and the crew brought some joy to Monday evenings - I bought the soundtrack, bought the DVD's and thought go ahead judge me. Glee brought me many hours of .. well pure Glee! . As a camped up Lady who loves musicals and a bit of over dramatising how could I not love it - roll on Season Two
Love a mash up

Ashes to Ashes: Fore ending of season three of Ashes then refer to Lost! Ha much a similar ending but yet a satisfying ending at that. What I loved about Ashes was the whole 80's vibe going on, loved it and it took me back to my youth.
Skinny Jeans WILL come back into Fashion

In honesty Series One was the best series but the soundtrack was SO nostalgic, it did what music is supposed to do and took me back to places and times of my youth, and it had a "feel good factor" with suspense and bit of scary mystery thrown in..like for Lost, everybody wanted big explanations etc. I was happy with what was provided at the end, I sometimes wonder if anybody has an imagination these days and cannot draw their own conclusions from anything

Sherlock: his was a suprise bonus this year. I loved it and loved the reinvention into a modern day Sherlock. I sincerely hope that they do another series, as with Glee, my Sunday evenings were brightened just that big more by this programme (plus I went to Baker Street on my Birthday and felt all in the know"

Dr Who I thought I would really miss David Tennant, and not like Dr Who as much. I still think David was the best ever Dr, but Matt Jackson has been a good Dr Who and I think one that will get even better. What has made this series for me is Amy Pond, I love the fact that he now has a feisty clever assistant with a bit of attitude about her. I look forward to series two.

And so moving on to music, this year for me was THE year of the female artiste. I awaited with bated breath the release of the new Kylie and Christina offerings. I saw SO disapointed with Bionic Christina Aguileria's first CD for nearly four years.
Xtina

There were a couple of good tracks on there, mainly "You lost me" and "Lift me up" but the rest were just not up to her standard at all. I was left fed up, but low and behold a steady favorite did not let me down "Aphrodite" by Kylie, is a pure pop, dance feast and leaving me with no doubt Kylie is back to her best. I personally don't think she has released the best tracks yet ,Cupid Boy is just begging to pump out in a club - no doubt about it

Finally I am still in love with the Gaga! In February I went to see her live at Echo Arena and she called us all her "little monsters". I loved the concert and thought she was amazing live. The concept of the show was Lady Gaga trying to get the party "The Monsters Ball" with her mates. It was like the" Wizzard of Oz" meets "Texas Chainsaw Macacre" in parts (those that went will understand) but me being me, I loved it. I have a real soft spot for good old Stefani as her first CD saw me through a bad time and it cheered me up. I love anything a bit different and nobody could call her anything but different!
Thanks Petal for brining me many hours of pleasure this year!!
We're not in Kansas anymore Toto

In 2011 I am looking forward to seeing more live music - this year has been a bit of a drought for me - so far, I have Kylie, Katy Perry (Ouch to my ears maybe?) Take That and I hope to possibly get Rhianna tickets fingers crossed, for me her last couple of songs have been amazing.

Finally for this evening, I will mention Cinema. To be honest, I saw quite a few films, Avatar, Tron, Iron Man 2 (which was cool by the way). I even got to see Inception, which made my head hurt a lot (made better by Cillian Murphy). Harry Potter, and the Deathly HallowsThere could only be one winner though and this goes to Toy Story 3. I loved this film from start to finish. You could say that is only to be expected from a Disney freak like myself, but it had everything in it. Comedy, Nostalgia, life lessons to be learnt, and a damn scary bit near the end, which had everybody I know hoping it was'nt what they thought it would be.

The end left me in tears long after the film had finished - a happy ending but also the end of an era in many ways

More to follow tomorrow , nighty night

Falling out of love

October 25th 2010 20:18
You have all heard the expression " That was just the icing on the cake" - "the straw that broke the camels back" .. well today has been like that for me. Over the last couple of weeks something has been building up in me and dare I say it, I think I am falling a little bit out of love with Everton and football in general.

OMG!!! the people that know me best might be a bit shocked by this, - Everton are probably my longest standing relationship with anybody or any thing outside my immediate family. I have give my all to them -supporting Everton has never been a one night, half hearted affair : I have dedicated my weekends and spare time to them, travelled abroad and spent a night asleep on an airport floor for them, spent my last pounds on them, cried real tears over them, screamed in glee with the pleasure they have given me, broken up relationships, let friends down for them - Yes I am talking about that Everton and it is that Everton have really peeved me off

It all started a few weeks ago, my brother took my nephew to Fulham - the result as you know was dire and we were near bottom of the league. My brother works hard and paid good money to watch that crap - my little nephew is 4 and already has the start of the relationship with Everton akin to the one I have described. He is a lovely kid, dead cute and just really loveable, a real credit to my brother and his wife. Anyway, on the train on the way home, he found out that the team were actually on the train and him and my little cousin aged got excited and wanted to meet their Heroes. They were told to come back after the players had eaten their tea, and so dutifully did as they were told and went back later,,, to be marched back up the train by a Virgin Steward with the message from the Everton Steward - to my brother and cousin - "Control your Children". Now as I said Aiden is a lovely kid and Luke is also very polite, they are good kids from good families - they are 4 and 8 - not North Faced wearing youths, with their "lids" with them ready to kick off - they basically wanted their programme from Fulham signing. Apparently the players were "feeling low" by the defeat and did'nt want disturbing - nothing I presume to how low my brother felt at paying out a lot of money to watch dire football and no where near as low as my nephew aged four felt at being let down by his heroes - nice way to go Everton. My cousin complained and the kids got some photos threw the post and were easily pleased.. big deal I thought this is our next generation of fans in a city dominated by Reds - that situation could quite easily turned them off the club by stuff like this.

The second thing for me is last week I went the club shop for a Season Ticket Evening - between me and my husband we pay nearly 1,000.00 for our tickets - we are not minted and go without other things to follow Everton, so I expect at least a smile not a pained expression when I get to meet a player at a meet and greet, who is on thousands of pounds a week - given the fact that the fans in the shop pay his wages, it is the least he can do

The third thing is Wayne Rooney ... ok not Everton related but football related. What a horrible greedy man - if the rumours about why he wanted to leave are true then god help us. This morning I was shattered, skint as it's near the end of the month and having to walk to work as we have no car at the moment. Getting ready I saw this picture on breakfast TV and was disgusted ..

Yeah we are considerably richer that you
Yeah we are considerably richer that you

It is not even close season and he has managed to celebrate his new pay deal in Dubai sipping pink champaigne when public sector are facing a pay freeze, a VAT increase, benefits are being cut, families are facing cuts in Child Allowance... nice way to go - once a knob head, always a knob head.

And finally my husband who co hosts the "Followtonians" podcast has been basically told he can have no more commuinication or support from Everton due to a few swear words on a twitter feed during watching the match. Do these people even go the match or have they ever sat in the Street End, Bullens Road, Park End and heard some of the lanugage there? Possibly not, I can only assume they sit with the prawn sandwich brigrade, so from now on when a goal keeper makes a mistake, we should proclaim " Oh butter fingers Howard! Drat " or when Moyes makes a substitution we don't agree with then we should express our distaste in another manner - perhaps waving our fist in the air and shouting " Why Moyes Why? bad choice old ginger nut".

Given that we, the bog standard, sweary mouthed Everton Fan keep the club in business and pay the sort of wages that allow them to sup champers in Dubai ,stuck by then in years of crap football during the Smith years, the Dome Mark 3, Mike Walker, then perhaps we should start getting treated with a little more respect and being treated like people and good people at that.

Today I have a good mind to go up to the club and ask for my money back for my season ticket if they don't want "my sort" supporting them -I honestly do.

I sign off with a disclaimer - this is my opinion and my opinion only it does not represent anybody other than myself, organisation, team or anything else I am associated with

Over and Out!

Memories... My Derby experiences

October 15th 2010 12:15
So this weekend is the first Derby of the Season. Is'nt it funny that no matter what, the thought of this game, always puts butterflies in the hardest of any blue's tummy.

I love Everton, have a season ticket and I too feel sick and queesy,. I have a certain macabre sense of excitement on the eve of a derby. Here is my run down of my own favourite derby memories.. I am not football acadmic by any means so don't expect a pass by pass acount of the match...

22nd March 1988 Goodison Park Everton 1 - Lpool 0

I was just a slip of a girl at this Derby and at the time I ran the Wayne Clarke Fan Club. At this point people normally laugh or look at me like I am insane.. I am not going to go into it, if you read When Skies Are Grey an article was in there about it last season. Anyway Liverpool had not been beaten for 29 games and were hoping to make it thirty when Wayne got one past them in the park end! Mass celebrations were held. I danced all the way home and laughed at all the reds in school the next day. Also subscrptions to the fan club increased!!

20th Feb 1991 Everton 4 - Liverpool 4 Goodison Park

This was replay due to a 0 -0 draw r days earlier. Replay was at Goodison on a cold evening This game is now hailed as one of the best FA Cup Games ever and you can see why. The game was totally up and down for both sides but as a blue, my emotions were high then low as anything, as they scored, Graham Sharp equalised, they scored, Sharp equalised, they scored, Tony Cottee equalised, they scored, TC equalised yet again. Phew what a night. We one the replay with Dave Watson getting us through to the next round

[

Everton 2 Liverpool 3 - 16th April 2001 Goodison Park

Yes I know we got beat but this game is trapped in the hard drive of my brain. When Ferguson scored, the ground rocked like mad and I cut my leg open on the chair in front of me and have a scar to this day. The first aiders insisted that I went and got it seen to but this would have involved walking past their fans and so I decided against it. We do deserved not to loose that game and when McAlister scored from that free kick it broke my heart - I remember walking out the ground and sobbing in the corner by the Church with the emotion of it all. To this day, the picture of Dunc wirling his top round over his head is one of my all time favourite images

Everton 1 - Liverpool 0 Goodison Park 11th December 2004

Will forever be know as the "Carsley Derby" and I have a picture of the "mound" with Tim Cahil at the top of it on my desk to this day. I can't remember much about it: the afternoon blurs into night as we had a Christmas night out where we were very, very, drunk and were singing Everton songs into the night and my brother done some very stupid things, including taking a shine and stealing a a hat that we named "t***t hat" (use your imagination) and putting things on his head and being generally stupid on County Road. One of those classic nights we still talk about now

Everton 3 Liverpool 0 Goodison Park 9th September 2006

"Da Da Da Da Andy Johnson", we all sang, and long after rocked the St End with but let's not forget good old Tim scored too. Again, an early kick off time and another drunk afternoon. This derby has happy memories of course but I also cannot help thinking of our friend Paul McComb who was haivng a ball with us and weeks later was still buzzing of the match, I still have the video he sent me on my phone. Sadly Paul is no longer with us, but I like to think he is sitting on a big blue cloud cheering us on every match but doing a bit of cheeky magic for the derby. RIP Macca

Everton 1 - Liverpool 0 Feb 2009 FA Cup 4th Round Replay Goodison Park

The "tick tack " derby for those that watched it at home or the " Super, Super r Dan, Super Danny Gosling"Derby for those that were there... a cold night and me going thorugh a very rocky personal time during this period, this match was just the ticket. We played then a few times over the weeks preeceding all during a time which I gave up smoking. How I managed to stay smoke free is beyond me, but I did, and we made Wembley too. Unfortunatley I was disapointed not to win the FA Cup and equally disappointed with Danny Gosling, he is dead to me now, but I will give him some credit where it is due

and there we have it, another post draws to a close. Who knows what will happen on Sunday..COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

Grim Tales

September 29th 2010 12:05
Over the last couple of evenings I have been transported back to the 1980's with two programmes that acutally (seriously) made me well up and want to cry. Not a lot does that to me on TV these days and it is a tribue really to the wrtiters and actors how they evoked emotions like that via a TV show
[
First up was finding this 80's grity drama set in my home town of Liverpool by default on BBC4. I have never had the opportunity to watch this which suprises me as I normally avidly tune in to anything City of Liverpool orientated on TV or Cinema

In my next life I will be a Vet

September 25th 2010 11:30
When I was a kid, I only ever wanted to be one thing a Vet. This sort of fizzled out when I got to third year senior school and I just did'nt have the natural intelligence required to do a job of this nature... I ended up somehow through a mixture of discovering football, pubs and other teenage stuff not doing a job in anyway related to any of my childhood dreams.

As I mentioned yesterday Duncan has not been well and so I took him along to the Vet this morning for their Saturday morning surgery (I don;t even think GP's do this!). Anyway, after much ado, (this was me getting out of bed and deciding what to wear) I got him there. I have to explain, now about Duncan and his love of the Vet's. Most dog's are outside the surgery crying, being dragged in by their collars/leads, scared of what is to come - Duncan bounds in their full of delight at the wonderment of what other Dog's, Animals and people are in there for him to make friends with

I need sleep!

September 24th 2010 11:16
Several times today my work colleagues have asked me if I am tired and if I have had a late night? Oh yes I certainly have, but not in the ways I used to have a late night many years ago, after a night out in Lennons Bar . No such luck! Unfortunately a certain young black labrador has kept me up half the night with his whinning like a big baby. You will hear a lot on this blog about my dog Duncan. He is a lovely, gorgeous, cute puppy but he is HARD work! (as you can see from the picture below!)

Who me? Naughty? Nah
