Last Minute Ideas

February 16th 2008 05:29
Hey I just realised since there is only a week left until Uni goes back, I am after some crazy fun ideas to finish off the break properly. Can anyone help me out with cheap, good ideas?
It is another YEAR before we get this kind of time off again.
My only idea so far is camping out on the couch watching the kind of junk I soon won't have time for.
But there has to be more to life! What does everyone else to to unwind and for fun?
Every year (dont laugh) I think wow, over the long break I will do something important, write a novel, be in a play, travel, learn the guitar, but every year I get distracted (ok lazy) and accomplish nothing. I am worried by the time Uni is over I will have accomplished nothing except get the degree, I will then go out and get a job, and never really LIVE!!!
Who else worries about this? And had anyone accomplished anything really awesome during their Uni break that they would like to brag about, or help the rest of us out with ideas?
If so, bully to you, and keep up the good life!
Some help would be much appreciated.

Lost Season 4

February 16th 2008 05:15
Welcome to a Blog devoted entirely to discussing, discerning, and debating the best Sci Fi series of all time! The series that has kept us all in the dark smoke for the past 3.5 years and intends to continue this trend for another 2.5 years. How infuriating, but I love it! Here is a space to discuss theories, share what you have discovered after each episode, and picked up from interviews with stars, etc. Cos I wanna hear it all! This blog will deal only with season 4, and will be updated after every new episode, however if we need to talk about the other seasons for this one to make sense, so be it! For this first post, I will provide a quick update on what has happened on Lost so far (seasons 1-3) so they can BASICALLY get what its all about. However, to you people, I would strongly suggest buying the DVD's you will not be sorry! Basically, Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on an Island somewhere in the Pacific, although we dont know where because it was discovered that the plane was heading in the wrong direction the last hour of the flight. Strange things started happening straight away, such as metalic noises and trees being ripped up and people being killed. This turned out to be the fault of a black smoke monster that we have been told is a security system for the Island. The other threat on the Island is a group of people that were on the Island before the plane crash, called "others" by the Losties, but called "Hostiles" by the group of scientists that were there even before the others, called "The Dharma Initiative". The Others (Hostiles) purged the Dharma initiative by killing them with gas. The others started being interested in the plane crash people, their worst crime was kidnapping a pregnant girl, Claire. This was because women on the Island apparently can not have babies, and when they enter their third trimester of being pregnant, they die. But they did research on Claire, and she lived, which may have been because she got pregnant before coming to the Island. Another lady, Sun, has since been found to have become pregnant while on the Island, so we shall see what happens with her. Hatches have been found all over the Island, which were implemented by the Dharma Initiative for their research. Things like studying polar bears, dolphins and sharks, psychology, medicine and metallurgy have been found to be studied, with many more I am sure to come. Some other weird things that have happened are that random people have seen things from their past on the Island which should NOT be there, like dead fathers, and imaginary friends. Also some skeletons were found, which implies people have been inhabiting the Island for a LONG time. At the end of the third season a lady named Naomi parachuted onto the Island, saying she was from a rescue boat. She has a satelite phone and has made contact with the people on her rescue freighter. The season finale see's the Losties finally making contact with people to rescue them, to the dismay of the others who are left, who do not want to be found. The very end sees a "flash forward" of two of the Losties OFF the Island, one of them saying he wants to go back! Why? We will find out in the near future!
There is a lot more to it than this, but you can watch or research them!
I will keep you updated on my theories and thoughts each week from the start of season 4 on, and please comment on what your thoughts and theories are!
This is a show with a lot to think about and debate, it could be fun!

How I get through it

February 16th 2008 02:48
I believe a large percentage of the reason some Grad students do not finish what they start, is that they have not found their vice yet.
There is a positive correlation between how happy a person is, and how long they wait until making a change to their lifestyle. Obvious, huh?
But how many of us apply this to our student lives? We are content to struggle though, in the knowledge that we dont enjoy what we are doing, but the end will justify the means, so its ok.
But are you as scared as I am that you wont make it through?
Everything in me says its easier to quit uni, get a job based on my undergraduate degree, and just give up in general, go the path MORE OFTEN travelled. But is this the way to start our careers, and our adult lives? I think not. I think we need to find ways to make Grad student life more enjoyable and easier to cope with. And I think it is hard to find the special something that will do that for you.
For me, it is not studying on weekends. At all. If it means staying up all night during the week in order to finish what I need to do, so be it. I ALWAYS know I have two days a week in which I do nothing but kick back, relax, watch the shows I have taped during the week and socialise. And this sustains me through the lonely, cold (unseasonably cold for February, by the way) weekday nights.
Another is studying in groups with friends, having a gossip break every few hours, and quizzing each other, making it into a friendly competition is really motivating. At least for a competition freak like moi.
And of course, I cant forget that magical formula, caffiene.
How do you get through it? I would appreciate any tips you could share!

One week left!

February 16th 2008 02:11
Hi Grad students! I have decided to start a blog devoted to the Grad students of this world.
Because sometimes I feel like there is nothing outside of Uni, and there are some issues facing us that undergraduates, nor people in the workforce can relate to.
Things like the difficulties of having all of one's friends working and earning money. Asking you to chip in for mutual friends (extremely expensive) birthday presents, go out for a fancy dinner (just as a one off, once a week or so) or go away for the weekend. No matter how many times said friends hear "No, I can't afford to do that" they still don't quite get it, and the more you say it, the more of a cheapskate you sound like. And feel like. You start to feel like you ARE making up the fact that you can't afford it, or that you are managing your money badly
