Salim Mansur
You know, Salim had it right when he wrote, "When an isolationist America was awakened after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour, it pushed aside all doubts about its commitment to freedom and took the war to its just conclusion against the modern barbarians in Europe and Asia."
I've taken some flak for being pro-American, but I can't think of a better neighbour to have. America does not start wars. When bitten, she fights back. With a vengeance. America leaves no doubt as to who's is the largest. Canada is finally getting back on stream and hopefully it doesn't take us too long to arrive there. We proved our worth at Vimy Ridge and throughout both WW I and WW II. We are getting it together again in Afghanistan.
In the meantime, we have to rely on the USA to defend us. Looking at this one way, we can say Hey! Great! We don't have to spend all our money on an army or munitions. The other way to look at it is Gee, isn't it great that we have a big brother to protect us? Either way, we have only our Liberal government to thank for the pitiful state of our armed forces. During their term in office, they've done all they could to make us look good in the eyes of the UN by taking away our weapons, ammunition and means of movement in, to and around the battlefield. It will take years to get back to the presence we held in wars past, but the Conservative government of the day has at least steered us in the right direction. I can't speak for all Canadians, but I do hope the Conservatives win a majority this spring and bring us back to power militarily.
"It is easy to describe Bush as a beleaguered president in a war that a majority of Americans now question as the November mid-term election demonstrated. They want an end to the war in Iraq without having to admit defeat. The agony of Bush is compounded by his knowledge of the enemy," Mr. Mansur writes. A lot of people are dumping on George Dubya, but I think when the dust settles, history will prove he is right.
U.S. presidents Lincoln, Roosevelt and Truman were also reviled in their times. "Their circumstances in defeating the enemies of freedom were much different, and less onerous than those Bush has to contend with. The Confederates were slave-holders, bent on destroying the American Union," says Mr. Mansur. He goes on to state, "Similarly, Roosevelt and Truman fought the fascist and militarist powers of Germany and Japan who were on a rampage across the world. But the enemy Bush is contending with -- while a majority of Americans and America's allies pretend it doesn't exist -- is not merely an alliance of states or a mix of ideologies or a cause that the United States must fight and defeat."
Bush has his hands full and he is covering our backs. The least we can do is take care of a little business for him in Afghanistan. Hopefully, under the Stephen harper watch, we can regain some of the respect we gained in WWI, WWII and Korea.
Let's hope it doesn't take too long to say Thank You to our American neighbours.
