Sailing Sat 24/10/09

October 27th 2009 01:02
Racing a Young 88 on Sydney Harbour.

For those who came in late.

We race a little 29 ft Young 88 yacht ”Fast Forward” on Sydney Harbour out of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

On Saturdays our courses consist of 4 or so laps around different marks depending on where the breeze comes from in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The club is in Kirribilli which is across the Harbour from the Opera House.

The club official boat lays inflatable bouys for us to go around as well as permanent marks laid by the Australian Yachting Federation.

There are 8 different courses which are dictated on the day by the Starting Officials.

There are several interesting islands and bays to navigate which only adds to the challenge and the interest.

Race Report for Spring Series Race 5 24/10/2009

At last!

Last Saturday we had a long looked for result.

It probably started Friday night. The pattern was set.

The little boat blitzed the casual twilight race, must have been the girls on board plus Kenny as a guest drinker. Ooops I meant main trimmer.

I should have been there!

So Saturday. We had a full crew of 6 and we were primed.

A very nice SE, probably between 9 and 12 meaning 15 or so across the deck. Perfect for the # 2 headsail.

Having watched the div 1 and 2 starts we decided that we wanted to get onto port as soon as possible for the work from Kirribilli to Shark Point it being the favoured leg. Starboard would have meant sailing across the face of the mark and probably away from it.

Not a bad start, mid line avoiding being jammed by the bigger boats and reasonable air.

The lovely people on "Come by Chance" who were sitting on top of us decided they would go early onto port as well and in doing so left us a big hole.

We went far enough to to be above her and went for port.

Bingo!

It worked. Most of the fleet went left leaving us alone.

At the top mark we were 2nd by about 20 secs to the converted Etchell "Wallop".

And that boys and girls was about it.

Kites going up and down, jibes, tacks all of that good fun stuff going on. We held "Wallop" for the next 2 legs but she did break free on the the 3rd work.

The spit was about 5 mins which we held to the end.

"Norn" was next about 4 mins behind us.

So after factoring in the handicap we had our 1st.

Pretty happy with that.

As usual we had a beer in the club while we waited for Margaret to publish the results .

Then had another, then another. Which is why I was late for the pub!

No official results so we left.

Turns out some one reported us to the race committee as not having rounded the Rose Bay RSYS mark the 2nd time.

We had.

At that time the splits were Wallop ahead by by 4.30secs and Norn behind by 4 mins with the next boat not in sight.

All was resolved amicably over the phone so no problems.

Don't know who did it tho. I doubt very much it would have been Robert Albert. Not his style. If he thought that we hadn't sailed the course he would have asked us about it later and if indeed we had we would have retired.

Love to find out but that's unlikely.

Good racing.

Chris
