Safe Graduation Does NOT Sound Safe
June 9th 2009 22:14
There is this out-of-the-ballpark idea called "Safe Grad" Graduation Party. What it does is allow graduates and their dates up to 10 drinks under parental supervision. They have to be at least in 10th Grade, which makes them 16 years old!
This is obviously someone's opinionated blog, because he/she agrees with the idea of exposing children to alcohol and attacking Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Nowhere does it say who will drive these drunk teenagers home. Ten drinks in 5 hours isn't exactly a "Safe" party.
The blogger feels that at the worst they will get sick, but neglects to state that perhaps these grads already had an alcoholic experience. The parents planning this party at an undisclosed location are noble in wanting the parents' written consent. I wonder if they will call the parents to confirm that the signature is theirs. They may face lawsuits if they don't confirm that the parents indeed agree.
Then there is a bigger problem. Let alone the 16 year olds, in most if not all places the legal drinking age is 21. The parents could face trouble for serving alcohol to someone underage and contributing to the endangerment of a minor. Now we know why the location is undisclosed.
I wrote other articles about children and grads having similar parties with tragic results. We seem to neglect that alcohol is a drug, but it is. Alcoholism is a disease. Exposing youngster to alcohol will make them young alcoholics. Everybody got sick on alcohol at one time or another, but few gave it up completely. Alcohol affects the brain quicker than most other drugs.
This has been a serious side of an otherwise humorous blog.
