Leila Cat shows her age

July 22nd 2008 02:36
July 21, 2008

Summer has started and is hot and humid. The past two weeks have been almost unbearable. Leila is the up stairs cat and is exceedingly sensitive. Leila has been watching the "boys" as they frolic oitswide. Of course, the "boys" are Smokey and Panther, who are the best friends to each other in this world. These guys love each other and play and show affection and concern for each other. They enjoy each other and show their love in many sweet ways.

Leila is up stairs because although the boys are quite inseparable, they do not display this kind emotion to her. In fact, they are intolerant of her and her sweet little beingness. So Leila watches behind the gate in her security of up stairs. Leila watches with fear and is ready to run and hide as they could intimidate and chase her if they jump the gate.

We were doing some repair work this week and Leila had human visitors. She was very brave one day and came down stairs and asked to go out by rattling the handle on the back door. She went out with the request that she stay in the backyard. She seemed to honor that request and ran and jumped and met with her old friend, Grace, who had fostered her as a kitten. Grace is a calico and quite regal in her demeanor. It was wonderful to see them kissing and touching noses and licking each other. They seemed to be quite content in their reunion. It had been a few years since they had seen each other. Leila came in tired and happy and seemed to be so satisfied with her outing.

The next day a visitior brought Leila down to go out again. Leila did go out, but there was much more interference from the boys. They chased her and cornered her and seemed to be herding her. She was uneasy and looked uncertain of her fate. Eventually the boys went in and I took Leila up stairs. She rested for a while and then I noticed, she was limping and seemed hurt. This outing had not done Leila well. Leila no longer had the stamina for such excitement. It not only taxed her nervous system, she must have gotten caught and been hurt. This was not abvious during her excursion, but was on reentry.

As I nursed her with homeopathics that night, it hit me, Leila is getting old. At about 10 years of age, she no longer had the stamina she once had. Leila is getting old. She looks great and one wouldn't tell from her coat; there is no telltale gray on her orange fur.

Leila is getting old and this means I am getting older also..Where has the time gone?

LLeila was my little kitten and ther is only one like her in her sensitivity and other world travels. I love this little cat dearly and after this incident, I must be ever alert to her needs and the fragility that may not be evident. She rallied quickly and seems quite well today, but this is a red flag that vigilance is required.

Puppy Cat Goes Out

July 12th 2008 13:58
July 12, 2008

Indeed, indeed.. A couple of years ago a cat demanded to get in. What a cat! He appeared to be a full isze gray cat, with a constant cry. He was exceedingly persistent. With a multiple cat household, it didn't seem wise to introduce another cat. We have the Panther and he is a difficult cat to live with - for felines and humans.

Yet this cat was unending in his cries and efforts to get the humans to let him in. It took much consultation and conferencing. In fact, we called a cat communicator to assit us in trying to tell the cat to go home, we had no vacancy. We had no experience with a cat, well, animal communicators at all. This experience was quite delightful. She did a long distance session and was quite informative about all the cats, having never met them, it was quite eye opening. She was able to tell us the color, markings, sex, and disposition of the cat outside. That was quite incredible! And so with some of this information to assist us in our decision, we agreed to let in the cat.

This cat was gray, long furred, double pawed with a small white star over his heart as the communicator had described. ( We didn't know this, as we had been too busy running from him and scooting him away to actually size him up.)

Being very imaginative, we called him Smokey. And so Smokey came in. There is a lot to tell about Smokey and his interactions, but suffice it to say for now that Smokey changed the dynamics of the house and its feline folks.

Of course, the first thing is quarantine until checked out by the vet and appropriate needles and in this case neutering, recovery from surgery and allowing the other cats to know there is a new cat living here.

One surprise about Smokey is that he didn't stop growing. Arriving at close to 10 lbs., he grew to 20 lbs. within a year. By the second year he is close to 30 lbs. He is all cat with tree trunk legs, very large face, those double paws and stands at least an inch over the quite large Panther. In fact, a friend who saw him after about 6 months here, called him "Puppy Cat". And he is the size of a medium dog and has somewhat the characteristics of a dog.

This year Smokey wanted out so badly! He cried and cried and cried and was so pitiful that as my vacation started.I bought a harness and leash. We tried it that first evening and within 7 minutes Smokey had escaped from the harness and was off the deck to the garden and plots below. Too late! Smokey is out.

To see Smokey in the yard is hilarious. He sits under the bushes with the birds in them and emits these long chirpy sounds as if he is one of the birds. Then he's off.. up the tree and chasing these as if they would stay there for him to catch them. OF course they are off and he's alone in these trees looking around and going out on the limbs that cannot hold his weight. Then the Crash, as all comes tumbling down. It is more like puppy behavior than a cat.

Smokey loves the outside and yet stays close to home where it is safe and comes when called. For after all, Smokey had outdoor privleges, not outdoor rights and he knows they can be revoked at any time for safety or noncompliance issues.

Meet the other Leila

July 8th 2008 03:20

I had intended to continue my reflective process today; However, a wonderful act of kindness that I have seen, has touched me deeply.

Today, as I visited my practictioner, CM, in her office out of her home, I was witness to a wonderful thing. This woman, allergic to cats, had been called on in a professional capacity to assist a young cat that had been abused.

A beautiful fluffy gray 5 month old kitten was to be seen. This beautiful gray fur, long and marked with tan stripes and dots very very lightly sheening through the gray. These markings were almost unnoticable and yet added such a highlight to the flat tone of the gray. She had a wounded look in her eyes, yet seemed hopeful too. She seemed attached to her caregiver and followed her. On taking this in, I saw this very tiny cat walk. As she did her 2 backlegs dragged behind her. She could not control these legs and dragged on the floor behind her in a sideways direction.

"Oooh", said I.

"Yes," said CM. "They think she been kicked and now has neurological, skeletal and muscular damage. I am working with her to strengthen her muscles to better bear weight. I am thinking of a brace to support her hind end so that she can walk standing up. I will need to contact professionals to see if this can be made for her."

How absolutelly touching that CM had not only given her time, but brought Leila to her home. Yes, CM can only call the cat Leila. It's the only name that trips off her tongue. Well this is quite a coincidence as I too, have a Leila Cat. My Leila also has a look of fear in her eyes. Two cats named Leila that I know. Each of them has a battle in this world. Each of them has health issues that affect their lives and will mark their existence in this lifetime. They have physical challenges that define their lives. And yet they bring the greatest of all to their owners...Love. They can love openly and unabashedly. Few people will really get close to them and they will respond with that one quality that all crave for ...Love, They will share and replenish and support their humans with love.

Yes, indeed it was touching.

For Leila will give and receive love to her human.

Meet the Cats and their human

My household is one where the cats are an integral part of the home, so I thought. But recently it seems that the cats' presence is bigger than mine in the house
