Hmmm... remember when you could travel anywhere you wanted and people were nice everywhere you went... Am I THAT old? In the face of modern-day terror tactics by governments and airport officicals, travel has changed dramatically. Do I feel safer not? NO! I don't... But, as an alternative you can get to Asia from Australia on a boat... no airports necessary... then, it's a loooong overland trek all the way through Central Asia and the Middle East -- or through China and Russia and the Absurdistans if you take the northern route -- to Western Europe where you can also get on a boat if you want to go to the United Stinkdom or Africa... Then... you can get on another boat and cross the pond to the Americas... from there, there's a massive landmass that can be crossed on foot if you feel like it... There are many travel options... Sure.. it's possible to avoid airports... it just means travel takes longer... and who says that's a bad thing?

I can see how that works... Here's my theory...

The father gives him beer because he wants to check out whether or not his potential son-in-law is an alcoholic, and the mother wants to see if he eats like a pig, so gives him cake... the design of ribbons and hearts would show his creativity and the size of the tree would indicate the strength of his committment.

All the same, I'd rather have a live tree any day...

Fleeing? Haha...
My mother has asked me that too... She thinks I'm running away from something. (such an optimist!)
However, my siblings think I'm looking for something...
In fact, I like to think of my perpetual travel more as a continuation of my education without the restrictions of borders. The only thing that limits where I can go is my own fear... and that doesn't exist...

I want sense and sensibility... I want to live in a world where I don't have to explain myself to everyone... and I want hard corn-shell tacos with lashing of chunky salsa and guacaomole on them... and chocolate... lots and lots of chocolate...

What a crack up! Loved it... Best laugh so far today... Love the photo too... it's perfect! That's a story I'll be sharing with friends.

Katyzzz --- get a sense of humour, and if you can't say something nice, why bother taking the time and effort to say anything at all?

I totally agree. Where is PLEASE? and whatever happened to THANK YOU? Have they both taken a perpetual hiatus? The lack of good manners not limited to one culture. Having lived in or travelled through 45 countries in the last 25 years, I've noticed a distinctive downturn in common politeness between people right across the world. In fact, in some countries it's considered obsequious to say 'please' or 'thank you' to anyone; particularly to people working under you, to people serving you in a bar or a restaurant, and to other kinds of service people. On the other hand, I'm finding a refreshing change in Comitan, Mexico where you say 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' to the bus driver when you get on the bus, and 'thank you' when he lets you off at your stop. You are absolutely right; common courtesy is free, and so is a nice smile when you deliver it.

Even so... I still think they were hitting on you, and I don't think it's about being "young and hot" or "old and cold" I think it's about being interesting and willing to listen. I'm neither "young and hot" or "old and cold" -- probably closer to "in form and still warm" -- and my experience is that men will often go for an interesting woman over a beautiful one. Although... some are so desperate they will target anything that moves... But I think that crowd is a minority too.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who...
... writes a shopping list so I don't forget what to buy, then can't remember where I put the list...
... walks into a room and can't remember why I went there...
... opens the refridgerator and can't recall what it was I was going to eat...
... forgets my own birthday...
... has to retrace my steps to find keys, sunglasses, purse...
And once, when I was travelling in Asia, I forgot which country I was in!
As my dad often says: "Happiness is good health and a bad memory"
