January 25th 2012 21:24
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had his contract extended through the year 2018. Goodell has been commissioner since 2006 when he took over for the retiring Paul Tagliabue. In 2011, Goodell successfully brought an end to a four and half month lock out, and was able to sign network extensions with ESPN, FOX, CBS, and NBC. Goodell is continually working on player safety and discipline as new rules and stricter fines have been brought about in his administration.
The Oakland Raiders have found a new head coach after firing Hue Jackson after just one season. Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen from the Denver Broncos is the man who has been chosen to lead the silver and black. The Broncos finished the regular season with the 20th overall defense and had a wild card win over the favored Pittsburgh Steelers. The Raiders finished with the 29th overall defense and missed the playoffs when losing their final game when all they had to do is win.
Over the weekend the Miami Dolphins announced Joe Philbin, the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers for the last five seasons, would be their next head coach. During those five years the Packers offensive production has been off the charts finishing in the top 10 in total points and yards. In four of the five seasons the Packers made it to the playoffs and won Super Bowl XLV in the 2010-2011 season. When introduced as the new head coach, fans could get excited when he said, “Today we are embarking on a journey to return this team back to the top of the National Football League, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished here in almost 40 years. We will attack the voyage with passion, energy and enthusiasm in our quest to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to South Florida.”
Peyton Manning is struggling with all of the offseason changes going on in Indianapolis. Manning has spent his 14 year career in Indianapolis and he has recently said he has "no idea" if he will be a Colt next year and the facilities are "not a good environment." Manning is still recovering from next surgery and there is a deadline of March for owner Jim Irsay to decided if he will pay Manning the $28M or cut the former eleven-time Pro Bowl, four-time league MVP, Super Bowl XLI MVP and Champion, quarterback.
