Rockstar has strong start; Interview with Trade Analyst

November 14th 2011 10:56

Rockstar Has Strong Start At Multiplexes Ra.One Drops

Rockstar had a strong start at multiplexes but single screens were below the mark. The film has mixed reports but weekend should be good on strength of Ranbir Kapoor star power with youth and multiplexes collecting very well. The film may find it tough in the long run as mass centres are unlikely to take to it The film started best in Delhi NCR but other big centres like Ahmedabad, Pune and Bangalore were also very good.

The Hollywood film The Adventures Of Tin Tin took a good start in 3D of 60-70% while the 2D version was around 35-45%. It was a good opening overall but with Rockstar being first choice at multiplexes business was probably hit a bit. the film opened on Thursday at places

Loot collected around 3 crore nett in its first week. FLOP

Ra.One (Hindi) dropped in week two as it collected around 15.50 crore nett but even with the drop film has collected a healthy 113 crore nett and a distributor share of more than 63 crore. HIT

ROCKSTAR Is 7th Biggest Opening Day Of All Time

Rockstar has had the seventh biggest opening day of all time. The top ten opening days of all time are as follows.

1. Bodyguard - 20.62 crore

2. Ra.One (Hindi) - 14.76 crore (approx)

3. Dabangg - 14.45 crore

4. Ready - 13.33 crore

5. Threes Idiots - 13.00 crore

6. Tees Maar Khan - 12.82 crore

7. Rockstar - 10.50 crore approx

8. Raajneeti - 10.33 crore

9. Housefull - 9.32 crore

10. Ghajini - 9.13 crore

Rockstar Has Very Good Weekend

Rockstar had a very good first weekend as it collected around 33.75 crore nett. The film showed a 8-10% jump on Saturday and a similar jump on Sunday. The growth in not big but still the film managed to grow on each day.

The growth on Sunday came from mass centres as single screens and multiplexes in these areas showed a jump. The high end multiplexes could not go much further as they were at optimum or near optimum levels on Saturday. The best business for Rockstar has come in places like Mumbai city, Pune, Delhi city and Bangalore

The opening weekend is similar to Ranbir Kapoor's Raajneeti released last year and that film went on to cross the 90 crore nett mark. Although that scenario can't be totally ruled out for Rockstar it will be tough as Raajneeti had more universal acceptance.

It will all depend on Monday and a 6.50 crore nett plus Monday will give it a chance for 90 crore nett.

Questions asked to a Trade analyst:

Q. In the 70's and 80's almost all directors made big budget commercial Hindi masala films with universal appeal and today a lot make big budget dark and off beat films like Rockstar, Kites, Guzaarish etc. Is it because today there are no directors left who make Hindi commercial cinema or because masala cinema is not as strong at the box office today
A. There are directors like Anees Bazmee, Farah Khan, Sajid Khan and Rohit Shetty who make full out big budget commercial masala films and its nothing to do with box office as these directors all have excellent box office track records. The scarcity of directors who believe in commercial masala cinema today is probably why the break-even ratio is down to 15% from 50% in the early 80's as its commercial masala films that have universal appeal and bigger box office returns.

Q. Which film has the biggest brand value Dhoom, Golmaal, Munnabhai or Dabangg?
A. On an all India level its Dhoom followed by Dabangg while big cities it will be Munnabhai.

Q. How much money will Eros/SRK and distributors make or lose with Ra.One ?
A. SRK/Eros will in the plus by around 20 crore or more. Most distributors are safe CP and CI ones likely to be in the red

Q. Ranbir Kapoor is seen as the next superstar but the business of his films his big films is just half of the Khan's so don't you think t is a huge gap which may not become any less?
A. It can get less but only when Ranbir Kapoor works in more commercial films with universal appeal. At the moment most of his films are urban aimed at multiplexes and these films have much lower business potential.
