Hi Fog,

Good to have an acquaintance in your part of the world too. I know Friends of Bill from Southern California to New York to Florida and now I can say I have made the acquaintance of a Friend of Bill in Austrailia. I have always wanted to visit there and it is still one of my dreams. I turn 66 next January and every year it gets a little more out of reach. I have added your blog to my list to monitor from time to time and will stay in touch.

Hi Mr. Musall ... we would never agree on the importance of religious or spiritual beliefs in ones life, and politically I tend to lean to the right on most issues. But, I completely agree that a church is not an appropriate forum for political discussion, nor is a chruch leader an appropriate moderator for that forum.

Politics should stay out of the Pulpit and the Pulpit should stay out of Politics.

Hi ... I just stumbled on your blog. I have to add congratulations also. Been there ... done that and just celebrated 19 years on July 8. The great thing is I having lived long enough to enjoy my grandchildren. Without AA and the steps I would have been gone a long time ago. I hope you keep adding 24 hour increments to your life.

... And I hope you get back to some meetings too. I also tried it for a while without but I really feel having the fellowship around me gives me a lot of support in my effort.

A slightly comical note; I thought about applying for a job opening at the AA Atlanta, GA central office recently. I never thought I would be seeking a job where being an alcoholic would be a prerequisite.

I am glad I found you this morning.

I have to agree that the "war on drugs" is not as effective as we would like and I have to question the logic. We need to make the penalty for "dealing" so miserable that it would not be worth the risk.

As to "one pot-head's opinion" ... I have seen MJ kill folks just as dead as alcohol, including some innocent bystanders. Keep fooling yourself, you will get there one day. And, the results of abusing alcohol are already criminalized in most states I believe.

Drug addiction, including MJ, is a matter of personal choice (until it is too late and I understand that children can be born addicted, which was a matter of a parents' choice) ... that is not the case with alcohol. Neither substance ever helped me deal with the realities of life ... only gave me a place to hide from them.

on An interesting read

Actually Jim I found the New York Times', 7/4/2008, rebuff of Mr. Obama to be much more entertaining (and a couple of the comments on the post actually made sense, but I just read a few). Actually I can not claim to know just exactly how Social Security was originally designed. I do know that I (and my employers) have paid into it on my behalf for over 50 years. I still have a long way to go before I feel I will have to accept my monthly check with any guilt.

Frankly, I am scared, really scared, of Mr. Obama as the leader of anything. Just too many questions about his background and upbringing. I would much rather see him spend a few more years "in training" so we could have a real track record to guage his abilities as leader. But, the Dems are apparently going to appoint him as their candidate and there is little or nothing I can do about that.

Unfortunately, I think Mr. McCain is past his time and his apparent mental indiscretions are proving it. The Republicans need to do better in their selection of a candidate.

Seems like we are being forced, for the third consecutive election, to choose between two poor candidates. I am going to take a real hard look at who the VP selections are and that willl weigh heavily on my decision on who to vote against.

Meantime, the Huffington Post will make as good a wrapper for dead fish as the St. Pete Times.

Thank you for the post Josie. I have recently reached conclusion that radical conservatives and radical liberials are really two sides of the same coin. The coin is counterfiet so as to fool folks into following only one path or the other, when neither represents the main stream of America.

I am having a real problem trying to figure out who NOT to vote for this year. I am old enough I am only going to get one or two more elections in ... my hope is I will get one more chance to cast a vote on one of two good presidential candidates, but alas, not this time around.

Interesting ... Randy, our politics are pretty close to the same (and I thought I was really special). I am probably a little more conservative in a couple of areas but then I am very much in favor of gun control (but not prevention). I look forward to following your comments.

Re your thoughts on Obama and McCain ... Obama is the worst thing that can happen to this country at this time; unfortunately, McCain is the second worst ... just my opinion. Partisan politics have again deprived the voting public of an opportunity to make a choice between two good candidates.

I hope you have some fun with this endeavor.

Some support for the claim that one third of health care cost are eaten up by insurance companies. Please document the source of your information.

Well Jim, at the risk of also being cynic (your word) I too would suspect that Mr. Shaheen will be back in her campaign organization before it is all over. I doubt that this was an innocent error in judgement and I suspect that her lack of knowledge of the happening merely facilitates plausable deniability. Mrs. Clinton is the only person that the Democrats can run that I arbitrarily will not vote for ... the Republican candidate will get my vote regardless of who gets the nomination. Sorry guys, I just don't trust her ... goes for her husband too. Otherwise I am wide open to cross party lines and vote Democratic. I really don't get too excited about what is coming from the Republican side this time around ... so far anyway ... and I am quite disturbed that so many Republican Congressional incumbents are continuing to stand by the Bush failure.

on Vision of a Republican Administration

I am not really concerned that our next president be Republican or Democrat ... I would just like to be able to vote for the better of two good candidates rather than the lesser of two evils. Unfortunately I do not see that opportunity coming from either party ... looks like it may again be a lesser of two evil year (though I am not sure the my choice of the lesser of two evils in 2004 really turned out to be the lesser of two evils ... and I know I would like to have my 2000 vote in Florida back). I think the Republicans in Congress have stuck by Bush way too long ... it is time that Congress started doing its job representing the people, not the parties. I get Howard Dean's newsletter (not really sure how that happened, and at two different email addresses ... and they actually did cut me off of one because they did not like my answers to a biased "survey" they were taking ... but for a secondary email address, I would be blissfully ignorant of everything the Republicans are doing wrong in Washington, which Mr. Dean is so quick to point out) and he is every bit as scary as another year of Mr. Bush.

We are going to have to face the reality of taxes ... my great-great-grandchildren will be paying for the Bush regime.

At heart I am an "Intelligent Design" guy though I can accept the possibility that the evolution of that design could have come via some long gone primate. I just can't figure out why it is so important. We certainly have more pressing issues in the world than maybe having a monkey gene or two in our veins.

I am just getting really tired of the Republican vs. Democrat, Conservative vs Liberal hype. I am really tired of a Congress that votes along party lines. I am really tired of a Congress that lets an inept president run rough shod over it. I am really tired of earmarks and pet projects. I am really tired of what I see as a major lack of integrity in our leadership. It has become all about power, prestige and money ... honorably serving ones country as a politician in Washington is a thing of the past ... for now anyway.

I wish everyone would start writing their Senators and Representatives. It is easy to do nowadays with email and the web. Get them to send you their newsletters and read them. Look for the detail and question what they do. When they claim that the new trade agreement with Peru will create jobs ... ask them what jobs and here or Peru? When they tell you that a farm bill is going to the floor with an allowance for twenty amendments from each side ... ask them if the amendments are going to have to pertain to the content of the bill, or a monument to my fellow hippies? It doesn't make any difference that how you feel, conservative or liberal, just let them know you feel and that you are paying attention ... I really think that is the only way we will get their attention.

We can sit here and BS ourselves all we want but it ain't gonna count if we don't include our elected officials (and candidates) in the loop. Write Washington today. And thank you for my two minutes today.
