on Obama and financial reform

I would tend to agree with Someone about very much new regulation ... but I would like to see existing regulations enforced. Companies acting responsibly should not be penalized for adhering to ethical business practices.

on Looking for a Liberal point of view

Well Randy ... I think he is doing he right thing, but probably for the wrong reason ... so just a coincidence. My feelings are based on two things:
1. I do not feel freedom, when given as a gift, will endure. Until the people of the Middle East, Aftica or any other oppressed society want their individual freedom and are willing to go to whatever length necessary to get it, it will not mean anything. Someone will come along and take it from them. Right now the people of Iran are engaged in civil disobedience but until they decide they want to move forward from the twelth century governing values ... freedom just ain't gonna happen. We should not be meddling because it is none of our business and we will not follow through. Does anyone really think Iraq and Afganistan are not going to recede to the twelth century as soon as we are out of sight? That is why it is going to take forever for our troops to leave. We are dealing with a part of the world that is governed by twelvth century regilous mentality and education is going to have to preceed freedom. I do not think religion and government mix well. Some of the original settlers of this country came seeking freedom of reliqion as well as freedom from religion.

2. I remember from my childhood, Budapest, Hungary. The free world encouraged bebellion then stood back and watched as the Russian tanks slaughtered the rebelling population.

I agree with Lester that Obama is not taking any action because he does not wish to aggrivate the Muslim world and I also suspect we are going to have to be fighting these same battles here in this country in the not too distant future.

There are a lot of yong people in Iran ... they will figure it out regardless of our opinion and hopefully join the rest of the world, well some of it anyway, in the 21st Century.

on John Ensign should resign

I think so too PopCon. To me, the current situation in Washington is just cause for term limits ... I think eight years but would settle for twelve. We should not have to worry about an incoming administration stampeding our Congress. I really think that is what Obama and Emmanuel are doinig now ... getting all they can, while they can, before the sitting Dems get too worried about their status in the 2010 elections because Obama's coat tails are going to start getting mighty slippery as he continues to loose public support. One of these days I want to do some research into our founding fathers. I am curious about their vocations and how that might have helped shape our Constitution. And I wonder how many were lawyers ... I think there are too many of those in Washington now. Too many or our officials are more concerned about grabbing power than they are about trying to do the next right thing.

on A sickly health care bill

June 21st 2009 17:14
47 to 50 million uninsured Americans is a political myth. The figure is a "best guess" based on census statistical data 2005 - 2007 as interpeted by various studies and / or comissions. The figure includes 7 to 11 million persons in this country illegally and another 15 - 20 million folks that are uninsured by choice. They have elected to be self insured. When they have a major issue ... then they want retroactive insurance ... or at least someone to foot the bill. So, we have 20 - 25 million folks who really need help and this is a reasonable figure. I like PopCon's suggestion of sending the bill home for those illegals abusing the health care system.

The system needs revision including all of the things you pointed out PopCon ... nice job.

I would like to see the politicians and their activists and the media use more accurate information in their presentations.

As SL pointed out, Obama and his gang have picked a popular topic to hijack.. Obama's public plan would put him in control of our healthcare within a couple of years at the most as the insurance companies will be history. In short order he has gained control of our banks, much or our manufacturing industry and is trying to control our health care dollars. That represents most of our money and that scares me. Freedom will be the exception rather than the rule in this country.

on Good news on the energy front

June 21st 2009 15:45
I have heard a couple of sources explain a large part of the oil price increase is due to the inflation we are beginning to see as a result of this country's fiscal policies. I have also heard that a positive side of the price increase is the cost of transporting goods from China to the USA will exceed the cost of paying the higher wages for producing the products domestically ... bringing jobs home. Apparently the petroleum gurus do not see the price receeding again.

I really think this administration wants to keep us strapped financially to further his political aspirations. Let us all look to the government for our salvation.

Good that we have more of an energy producing asset if we can just protect it from this adminstration's control.

I agree with Lester's comment. I do not think our founding fathers envisioned career politicians and the damage they do as the sink into the Washington political muck.

on Obama and financial reform

I agree that regulation is necessary for the pubic interest. I also think that the regulators should be held accountable for their actions including appropriate consequences for not doing their job. I do not think the Federal Government does a good job regulating. Washington Bureaucracy is incompetent and casual in their handling or the public good. Of course so are many of our elected officials don’t do their job in a stellar fashion either … case in point is Barney Frank and his refusal to investigate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2001. Our crash might possibly have been avoided or at least minimized. The Federal Government has the responsibility to regulate the banking and finance industries, the states regulate the insurance industry. Look which side failed. I know AIG is considered an insurance company but the insurance side stayed healthy under state regulation, the financial side of the company failed under Federal Regulation. On the state side, at least some of the regulators are elected and therefore accountable to the voters … on the Federal side, the regulators are political appointees, accountable to ???.

Why does this administration make me think of Chicago during the days of Al Capone?

on A timeline of America's next 10 years

June 19th 2009 00:55
I agree with you Randy. Mr. Obama is evil, wicked, mean and nasty. And, I suspect he has an agenda that goes beyond eight years in office. Of course Newsweek has declared him a god, that is higher than a king I think. I can't help but imagine his buddies at Acorn combing the ghettos for the thugs that will make up his own private militia come election time 2016.

Do you realize that if he succeeds with his public health plan option it will, within a couple of years, put the insurance companies out of business, which I think is his goal. I mean it is only another million and a half unemployed. Of course some of them will find jobs on the federal payroll. He and his "czars" will control the banks and financial sector, most of the country's auto production and our healthcare system. Within a year of being elected he will control most of the money in America. After that Congress will be meaningless bobble heads but then a lot of them fit that description anyway.

This post is way far to the right of where I really am but Obama scares me. This is the first time in my life of 66 years that I fear for the future of freedom in this country. I am not a Bush fan, nor do I watch Fox news; these feelings are gleaned from observing many sources network and printed news.

A friend pointed out that should I find myself having to deal with a constipation problem ... just stand in front of a mirror and remind myself that the future of this country is in the hands of Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank and Rangel. That ought to scare the ____ out of me. It works.

on Hey Pelosi just blame it on Bush!

May 16th 2009 20:28
This whole issue just continues to reaffirm my very negative opinion of Congress and Washington. Mrs. Pelosi and crew are just as guilty of wrongdoing as anyone at which they are pointing fingers. When I was growing up I looked at our elected officials with respect and to some degree even reverence. Well, the bubble has burst and I feel very betrayed by what has been revealed. Some lady from the Huffington Post commented on CNN the other night that Mrs. Pelosi's attitude was coming very close to Slick Willie's "I did not have sex with that woman" stance; but then it's just another lie from just another politician. More and more I see the need for term limits. We can send a pure, ethical and moral person to Washington and they quickly become tainted by the quest for money, power and greed that permeates our government. I no longer see our politicians super-citizens. I have decided that their principle purpose in life is to give lawyers someone to look down on. Nor do I see this as a Democrat or Republican nor a liberal or conservative thing … the disease runs rampant in both parties and philosophies. Term limits folks … eight years!!! Bring the ivory towers down. Let’s get back to government of the people, by the people and for the people.

on Sigh. Get over it. He won.

April 29th 2009 01:57
Jim, who won the election? Seems to me the Democratic Party hierarchy manipulated (legally, not to imply anything illegal) things to get a Democrat elected (their job of course). I don’t think they really cared who won in the beginning … they exercised smart strategy and adapted as the primaries progressed. When it looked like Mrs. Clinton could not beat the Republicans, they abandoned her and pushed Mr. Obama. Through the use of their super delegates they can control who will represent their party, regardless how folks vote in the primaries. The liberal media surely weighed in to slant things a bit. Mr. Obama very smartly campaigned heavily in the industrial states where the electoral votes are concentrated and carried those states. Promising change, he won the vote in the depressed inner city areas (being black probably got him an undecided vote or two also). His organizers went out and made sure as many people as possible got to the polls and exercised their right to vote. I watched bus loads coming in to cast early votes in Georgia. I don’t think that would have been the case had Mrs. Clinton been the candidate. The Democrats just ran a smarter, more politically savy campaign than the Republicans. Personally, I think the 2008 campaign began back in 2004. The Democrats realized it would be difficult to beat Mr. Bush, regardless of his growing unpopularity, because a lot of people just are not going to change horses in the middle of a war (2008 we had to change). They gave up their sacrificial lamb, John Kerry, and gained a good measure of just how unpopular Mr. Bush’s policies were becoming and that is when the 2008 campaign began; it certainly was not put together in just a year. People really expressed their displeasure in the 2006 Congressional election but I seem to remember that a few Republicans retired, or gave up in disgust, that year.

The Republicans, 2008, just plain screwed it up. They do not have the super delegate tool so the primaries really count. They did not have a really strong candidate … at least I was not impressed with any single candidate. They lost a lot of votes by introducing a very polarizing Mrs. Palin into the mix (I think a lot of Republicans just stayed home on voting day). And, they really had no way out of the mud-bog of the Bush/Cheney eight year debacle without a really strong, strong candidate and I am not sure there was/is anyone in the party that could/can fill that bill.

So, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, et al, won the election and they allowed Mr. Obama along for the ride. With Mr. Spector’s bolt from the Republicans today, looks like they are going to have a free reign for the next couple of years. Hopefully the damage they do will be repairable down the road.

I don’t like what is happening in Washington today … we are throwing a lot of cash at problems hoping they will go away. I don’t think the problems are getting solved. I think this country has climbed out of the frying pan and into the fire and my grandkids are going to get burned big time. In all honesty though, I am not sure the Republicans could do any better … at least they are not offering any alternatives but I do think my grandkids would not be paying the bill … or would they? I don’t wish the Obama presidency failure, I hope it is successful but if not I hope they don’t screw it up so bad we can’t fix it when starting in 2013.

Perhaps some sort of moderate conservative party will evolve from all of this mess. I hope so, I need a political home and right now I don’t feel comfortable anywhere. The radical right needs to realize we have to work in the world and we can’t do it based on a literal interpretation of the Bible. I really think the moderates in this country out number either the radical left or the radical right or both sides combined, they are just not organized.

Again, just my feelings, unsubstantiated, unstudied, uneducated, off the cuff. Sorry for the long post. I hope I have not abused any blogging etiquette rules.

Funny, CNN just asked why people in Mexico were dying of the flu but no one in the US was dying … maybe because they have universal (rationed) health care in Mexico. But that is another topic for another day.

Term limits for Congress … 12 years!!!

Oh well … end of the world 12/21/2012 … DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY!!!
