REVIEW: THE INCREDIBLE HULK
June 26th 2008 14:11
Hi, this is my first written review, I'm usually just shouting my opinions at friends and family that could not care less, so being a comic book fan I had to start off with the big green guy.
First things first, being that this is so close to the release of Ang Lee’s Hulk and the fact that this film is ushering in the new term ‘Requel’ (Lame I know)
I think it’s a must that I give my opinion on the first attempt. No I don’t think you can say Ang Lee is a bad filmmaker in general but in general The Hulk was a bad film.
I can understand what he was trying to do but it didn’t fit with a Hulk film, we want to see him smash things. Now I admit I am a big comic book geek and the new breed of Marvel films that are coming out have got me in fanboy heaven and to me The Incredible Hulk was…well incredible.
The film takes the best elements of the comic and the television series and adds jaw-dropping action scenes that will have you glued to the screen. Is it as good as Iron Man you ask? Well, no. But that’s a tough ask seeing as though Downey had a better character to play with in Tony Stark. Not saying that Edward Norton isn’t great playing Banner, but Banner is a low key character and Norton plays that perfect. Liv Tyler is great and the pair display so much longing in their scenes that it adds to the believability. Tim Roth is fantastic as Emil Blonsky, the man who will do anything to personally take down The Hulk and William Hurt is as solid as ever as ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross trying to take down The Hulk for a different reason. It’s great to see good actors in genre films these days although I also think they now this is where the money is at the moment.
One thing that this has over Iron Man is the action sequences - they are amazing, a fan boys dream come true. Director Louis Leterrier knows how to shoot action and gives us amazing angles and view points that most action directors would not. The battle between The Hulk and The Abomination is one of the best fight scenes I have ever seen and has to be witnessed on the big screen (If you are in to two giant monsters smashing the crap out of each other that is).
The negatives about the film are few and far between, the type of film that you can go along for the ride and allow certain missteps, just putting them down to being a comic book movie. Overall the film is top shelf but like most super hero films you are waiting for the hero in the costume to emerge or in this case the big green guy, and that is the real draw card, as I said before Banner isn’t Stark. And if you are in to comics and you haven’t seen the film yet, there are so many comic references and builds upon this new Marvel film universe even more than Iron Man did – Bring on Thor, Bring on Captain America, BRING ON THE AVENGERS!!!
What’s the best thing about all this? I will now be able to have a HULK DVD in my collection, and that’s the whole point of this. Marvel knew the first one sucked, and they knew that they could build a franchise out of The Hulk, so they started again, and thankfully they got it right.
Oh, and HULK SMASH!!!
