Review: Skate 2
February 7th 2009 12:49
As a fan of skating games in general EA's skate came as some what of fresh breath of air to the genre, Tony hawk had released project 8 which is still now probably the best of its series and seemed to hold the whole market with an iron fist, then came skate and attempted to change the game by focusing less on insanely high scores and controller breakingly hard combos and getting back to the core freedoms of skating.
The game used the right stick as board control meaning that all the moves where fluid and no longer made by pressing large complicated button combos allowing the player to focus on what trick to use as apposed to mashing the keypad, the system worked great and the game had many people like me spending hours in one location trying to get the best score possible, the games online play allowed you to spend time just skating around a city with friends hitting spots and causing trouble, true skateboarding distilled. The game did have some bugs, at times the camera was troubling and the unability to get off your board sent me into more than one than one fit of rage, but I do have to admit these were a small price to pay for a great gaming experience.
So when word of a sequel got to me I was instantly excited, the pictures looked great and most reviewers were singing nothing but praise for it. The game took a while to really hit home and the training seems very long with it spread out over many events, this probably seems worse because if my veterancy of the first, but when you begin to explore the game really opens up to you. The map is huge and thanks to a revised graphics engine it look fantastic running the experience at a smooth 60fps, san vanelona never looked so good!
New moves like hippy jumps (hopping over things) and fast plants (kicking off walls) give the player a whole new level of freedom allowing the player to put a person style into the game. The games majors flaw if any are that it has a huge difficulty curve that it a strain on new player and this could turn some players off and at times the controls are still annoying, like when you are stuck in a corner and trying to rotate around to get back into the action.
This is the best skating game that I have played and with only a few small issues the experience is the closest I will get to being a skate pro without me breaking my collarbone. 9.5/10
