REVIEW: PATHOLOGY
June 29th 2008 00:19
When I first heard the premise for Pathology I was intrigued. A group of young pathology interns try to outwit each other with the perfect murder. One commits murder and the rest try to determine how the murder was committed.
I liked the premise but would the movie hold up?
Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia) is a brilliant young intern who arrives at Philadelphia's University Hospital and doesn’t receive the warmest welcome from his new colleagues.
Although I was enjoying the film I could see where it was going – Young golden boy gets corrupted by others then redeems himself by the end. But I was wrong and gladly so. You see as the film plays out you come to realise Ted isn’t the golden boy, he’s a young man that is already some what corrupt and immoral and his activities with his new colleagues are allowing him to exercise his corruption. It’s refreshing to see a main character who isn’t really a generic good guy and through the course of the film you can see everything he has done he has done for himself. While Ted explores his dark side we get plenty of dead bodies being cut up, some very inventive deaths and some disturbing sex scenes.
The acting and dialogue are both top notch and Michael Weston, who plays Dr. Jake Gallo, is fantastically twisted as the alpha male of the group threatened by Ted’s smarts. Also in the cast is Alyssa Milano who plays Ted’s fiancé and even though she’s not the greatest of actresses it’s good to see her in something where she can act although even here she doesn’t get much to work with. It’s a tight script but because of this it doesn’t allow for much fleshing out of the characters and there are certain developments toward the end that seem more than a little illogical unfortunately. Also I'm not sure if it will find a core audience, horror fans should enjoy it but it might be a bit too rough for the average thriller fan.
Overall this is a nice gritty thriller filled with sex, drugs and cadavers just like Flatliners, right?
6.5/10
