Review - Leonard Cohen - Sat 23 Jan - Rochford Wines.

January 30th 2009 08:49
Saturday was a very warm day for an outdoor concert, so, that part was fine. The first thing I took note of was the wineries rules for entry, I could understand no bottles or even umbrellas, not that I would intentionally poke anyones eyes out, but, no sunglasses.

From all accounts anyone with umbrellas had them confiscated and did not receive them back, I heard one man mention that at the end of the concert his mother asked where she could get her umbrella returned from and she was told that it had been thrown away with the rest of them...not sure for fact but I did hear this.

Leonard Cohen is such a good looking man, and upon having a discussion with the main photographer for the day he confirmed this fact by the lovely photogenic shots that he managed to capture. Poetic justice in more ways than one I guess.

Paul Kelly was Leonard Cohen's main support for this event, although I let this part of the day skim by without really listening.

Leonard Cohen began his set, with such original vocals, there is no way you could mistake for anyone else, although I must admit, listening to Leonard Cohen, I kept thinking of Nick Cave, there is such a strong vocal resemblance. You can surely hear that Leonard Cohen is a huge impact on Nick Caves style, and if that is not intentional, then it is just plain freaky.

Both alternative in their own ways, but Leonard Cohen, being, Leonard Cohen, such a standalone artist. Many may say an aquired taste, but his true fans remain just that...true fans. There was a sell out crowd of approximately 8,000 patrons. For most a mature age bracket of I would say, true music appreciators.

I had known of Leonard Cohen and his well known tracks, but had never taken on board his originality as an artist, maybe I am from a different generation, but there was no way I would miss out an broadening my own perceptions and the chance to see such a well known artist live.

He has the type of voice that is rare and original, controlled, deep, resonant and soothing. There were times when I really felt like I would fall asleep and then the tempo would pick up a little again. But I had to remember, he is not an act as per the normal, he is a poet and a songs man. Poetry in music, poetry to music, perception and reality, after all, that is what poetry is? One persons view on something, and the need to write or sing about it.

So, at the end of the night I was left thinking about how many writers or poets may be lucky to reach half way up the ladder of success when a handful, if that, can compel countries world wide for decades.

Thumbs up to you Mr Cohen, it is artists like you that keep the music industry ticking.
