Rest for the Weary

Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. Then he went on alone into the desert, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree.
1Kings 19:3, 4 and 5a (New Living Translation)
In this passage of scripture, Elijah the prophet had just experienced a great victory over evil in his ministry. In I Kings 18:16-40, Elijah had reminded the people of God and the prophets of the false god Baal of the powerfulness of the one true God. At that time in Israel, however, the nation of Israel had an evil queen named Jezebel who hated the prophets of God. When Jezebel found out about Elijah's victory, she wanted to cut off his head.
In I Kings 19, the Bible tells us that Elijah was running for his life. He was fleeing from the evil queen who was pursing him. He was so worn out that he just wanted to die. In the verses that follow, however, God sends and angel to give Elijah food and water to prepare him for the journey ahead. Elijah then travels forty days and forty nights until he reaches the mountain of God where God speaks to him.
Many of us face challenges and evil in everyday life. God understands what we are facing and will give us the strength that we need for the journey. Trust him today to help you face whatever may be before you.
