Residents are being advised to stock up on canned food

Yes, that was a news headline a few days back in response to the spread of swine flu.
Personally, I cannot decide whether this is a public service being offered to the Australian people, or just panic mongering.
I wasn't in Australia around the time of bird flu or SARS, so perhaps some Aussies can enlighten me (or anywhere, for that matter)... but is the fear surrounding the spread of swine flu similar to that of these 2 other outbreaks? Were there similar news bulletins?
I was in Indonesia during both of these outbreaks, and I didn't see the big deal. My mum used to be an intensive care nurse, and she was freaking out. There are chickens all over the place in Jakarta, just running around in the streets, so worry about the spread of avian flu was pretty intense in our house.
As one could probably deduce, I am a fan of horror movies. Of particular pertinence at the moment are the survival horror/thrillers where small groups/individuals arm themselves against each other in an attempt to avoid infection. I can't help but wonder, if Hollywood has taught me anything, is now a good time to stock up on guns and ammo in order to avoid the coming catastrophe? I can see myself being the guy that discounts the distant possibility and doesn't live long enough to regret the mistake. I think I feel a flu coming on.

But seriously. You would think they would advise people to start eating heaps of citrus and vitamins and stuff. The malnutrition statistics are a lot more frightening than one would suspect, and a wounded immune system is no way to tackle something as nasty as this killer flu.
