The Mosque at Ground Zero...

August 16th 2010 14:54
I tried really really hard. I tried REALLY hard. I promise I did. I tried not to jump into the question, fray, political commentary on the question of the proposed mosque near the sacred site of the former World Trade Centers in New York. I tried because freedom to worship at the church of our choice is for the lack of a better term, sacred.

I'm weighing in on the subject today because I'm sitting at my desk working on the charity I founded in October, 2001 - a little more than a month after that horrible morning everyone knows as 9-11.

I worked a night shift job at the time. I heard about the first plane crashing on my way home. By the time I got in the door, set my things down, the second plane had crashed. Before I could get my mind around what was really happening, the first tower had fallen. I was making breakfast for my precious pet rabbit, Thumper, at the time. He saved my life and that's a whole other story. But as I was slicing his apple, chopping his sweet potato, and filling his water bottle with fresh water, all of our lives changed forever.

As I imagine you did, I spent the next few days glued to my television and trying to understand why, what, how, had THAT happened to our country and on our land. Thumper stayed right by my side the entire time. He knew something was wrong. He crawled in my lap and looked at me with his huge brown eyes as if to ask for an explanation of what was wrong. He just knew. He would die a little more than a month later on Monday, October 29, 2001.

I founded a charity, "Pennies for Pets" the week he passed away. Every month since, I have collected pennies, kept all of my loose change, etc and donated them to a shelter, a vet, or a person making a positive difference in the lives of animals and their care. I think he would be proud. I still miss him because the heart never forgets.

Two blocks from Ground Zero? I support EVERYONE'S right to worship, but the heart doesn't forget. I don't care who owns the private property where it will be built, I don't care if it will help honor those lost on that day, I don't care if it is meant to promote healing, I DON'T believe you! You know what it is and many of us do too. Stand up people! If we don't stand for something, we will fall for anything! Until next time...Renee'

Moving It Foward But On What Track?

August 2nd 2010 14:46
I have been so grateful this week and thank goodness I found lots of laugh moments in the past 7 days. Laughter, for me, is a weathervane. Over the years laughter has been a trusted old friend to let me know if I'm headed in the right direction or is there a strong wind of change blowing and from where.
When I am able to laugh, even at myself, I know that my life is moving foward and I am not just making do and getting through.

I have seen the "change" blowing through our country for almost two years now. It had come in with great promise for some people who had not checked the weather outside before they headed to the ballot box. The country has changed, I will agree with that, but has it moved forward? I would have to say no. Is it too late? Have we gone to far to the left to bring balance back to ourselves and the blessed land we get to call home? Thankfully, I can say no to that as well.

Course of direction can change. It can change in a bad job situation. There is a job out there for anyone who is sincerely willing to work. It can change in November if enough people will go vote in a mid-term election (less than 90 or so days from now) and it can change your heartbeat when you look around your small one bedroom Texas Gulf Coast apartment at the information collected over two short weeks on what I have to do over the next year to get into law school.

I cannot help it. The small giggle starts, then I find myself smiling, then I find myself laughing at loud. That's how I know I'm on track. This country, its First Peoples, its legacy and their history. They are both worth the fight ahead. I hope each of you are looking at ways to pay your blessings forward to this nation as well. She has stood so strong for a very long time and needs all of our help now more than any other time in her history. Please join me in finding a moment to laugh today in the midst of the chaos that has been promoted as "change". Then, go find your voters registration card and till next time...Renee'

I've been away for awhile. The reasons why are too numerous to mention, but to put down in a few words...I was discouraged.

I love this country. I love the history of it. I love studying the good, the bad, and the ugly about it. The ugly is showing quite a bit lately and that might explain why I've been discouraged.

I live on the gulf coast and we all know about "the spill". Honey, it ain't no spill! That would assume we could run out with a bunch of paper towels and just wipe up the mess. Arizona is being sued by its own government in Washington. The new Supreme Court nominee is not a Native American and should be. It's WAY past time for that to have occurred. The liberal news media is not reporting things it should be, but jumps on Sarah Palin every chance they possibly get. Like I said, I've been discouraged and I haven't been able to find the humor in much of it as I usually do.

Well, I think that's about to change. I can sit back, watch it all, take it all in, read as much as possible to be informed and make the best choices I can at the ballot box or I can do all of that and not sit back. It's that old, put up or shut up thing....

I'm FED up so I guess the shut up choice is out! I have a cushy, good paying, job in a bad ecomony and I'm grateful for it. But, its not enough anymore. It's not enough to sit by, know things can be better, and not do anything about it. So I am. If nobody else wants to be an advocate for the First Peoples of this nation, I will. I'm enrolling in Law School. If no one else wants to defend this country in the media, I will. I'll blog and stay as informed as I possibly can. Thanks for your program last Friday night, Glenn Beck! I've got my boots on too and I promise I won't take them off.

Thanks in advance to each and every one of you brave enough to join me and till next time...Renee'

Happy Trails, Miss Helen...

June 8th 2010 14:24
Helen Thomas of the White House Press Corps resigned yesterday. Well, resigned may not be the correct term, but that is how it was reported. Her blunder over suggesting that the residents of Israel needed to “get the hell out of Palestine” was certainly un-called for, terribly bigoted and frankly un-dignified for someone with such a long standing career as a journalist.

I wasn’t a particular fan of Miss Thomas. She once announced that President George W Bush was the worst president in history. No, madam. He wasn’t. President Woodrow Wilson and President Jimmy Carter would probably come much closer to being able to claim that title. My least favorite was President Andrew Jackson. We all have our opinions, don’t we

I'm Bored With The Board Offer

June 2nd 2010 05:01
I often find myself intrigued by the news of the day. I’m interested to grow my knowledge and my perspective on things that directly affect my tiny gulf coast island community in Texas and what’s going on in other’s lives that make them who they are and who I may have first thought I had nothing in common with.

I sometimes find myself saddened by the news. We learn the about the deaths of abused children, or a young life cut too short by poor decisions to text while driving or seeing some of the oil soaked wildlife from the BP oil spill. Why are they still calling it a “spill?” At this point, I’m sure it is safe to say it’s a teeny bit bigger than something you can mop up with a paper towel on your kitchen counter

Muddy Transparency Isn't Clear...

May 25th 2010 05:28
Most dictionary entries define the word transparent as being "able to be seen through." What I am seeing in the news today is VERY clear. This one term president has not delivered on another one of his promises - this one being that he was going to have the most transparent administration in the history of our country.

Well, if that is the case, then you won't mind stepping up to the teleprompter and telling us the true story, in clear and understandable terms, what is going on with Congressman Sestak from Pennsylvania saying he was offered a job in the White House instead of running against Senator Spector

May 26th & Why I Won't Give Up...

May 21st 2010 15:47
Growing up, I heard the phrase "mean what you say and say what you mean" alot. I heard it from family members, teachers, and good friends. I have sometimes fallen short, but I try very hard to put that phrase to practical practice in my everyday life as much as possible as often as possible.

Yesterday, after hearing the one term president and his president friend from another country, Mexico, dump on, ridicule, lecture, what word am I looking for here, Arizona and its immigration law, I don't know whether to be mad, sad, or embarassed. It was bad enough when the one term president went on his apologizing for America tour when he first took office, but now he invites folks to do it on our land, at our house, in our rose garden, and even in our house of Congress, and he goes ahead and joins in? And the absolutely worse part of the whole thing was when some members of Congress gave the

Semi-Super Tuesday & Hope

May 19th 2010 17:31
I was encouraged by yesterday's primaries and the message it sent to some incumbents that your poor voting choices in the past have very powerful consequences in your present and future.

I was a little discouraged by the low voter turnout in some of the races across the country. The phrase We The People always comes to mind when I hear those numbers. I still get a big lump in my throat at the mere mention of the three tiny words. They can evoke justice when talking about a jury, they can evoke power and promise when talking about a grass roots movement sweeping the Repulbican party and the country; they always evoke such pride when I hand my voter's registration card to the worker and prepare to make the most informed decision I can make at election time

The Ongoing Rhetoric

May 17th 2010 03:17
I got up early Saturday morning to get a head start on my to-do list for this past weekend. I knew I had bit off more than I could chew, but once it is on my list, it's going to get done. I flipped on the television to get the morning's news and it was one bad story after another. After about 15 minutes, I had to ask myself why I was sitting on the edge of the couch with my remote in hand just shaking my head at it all. I turned off the television.

I decided to re-watch several of my favorite movies instead while doing house chores. One of my five favorite movies of all time is Sense and Sensibility. I watch it about once a week usually. As I pondered again whether Marianne would ever come to her senses about Colonel Brandon, I thought about how our current political climate and the ongoing negative rhetoric of the mainstream media might have fit in that time period. Could I see myself restricting my remarks to the weather if I could not find a polite thing to say? Would I be content to wait for the news from town until it arrived several weeks or months later by a visitor to my home? I don't think I could

I Will Show My Papers...

May 13th 2010 18:05
I've been away for a couple of days taking care of some healthcare issues, but I'm back and ready to weigh in on the Arizona Immigration law, flying the American flag and "showing my papers".

You know it was FDR who said all we have to fear is fear itself. If you are in this country legally with proper documentation or are a citizen, why you should care if a police officer asks to see your license, your work visa, etc...after you have already been pulled over for a violation. They are still most likely gonna give you that speeding ticket...In most states, including mine, Texas, it's required you carry identification with you at all times. And, to be honest, this "racial profiling" excuse everyone in the media wants to use is a cop-out because unless you are 100 % Native American, YOU ARE AN IMMIGRANT in this country! So, show your papers and shut up! And, if you're in this country illegally, there SHOULD be consequences
