2008 Odfjell Armador (Chile)

July 22nd 2010 23:18
So, what kind of Spanish name is Odfjell? The Norwegian kind actually... and what is an Armador?... a shipowner...

As the story goes, over 25 years ago, the pioneering Norwegian Armador, Dan Odfjell discovered and fell in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley, Chile. He bought a vineyard, made wine, many moons later I ran into him.... well his wines actually....

I have a couple of bottles of the previous vintage of this beautiful Carmenere and the wine stop brought in the 2008 and I just had to, well, stop by for a taste or two (or twenty) yesterday.

90 points by Stephen Tanzer's Intl. Wine Cellar... 91 by me, if you consider the price and the the fact that I was 19 other sheets to the wind... more on those at a later time. Right, the Armador...

Deep, dark viole color with an opaque, almost black appearance. The first impression of this Carmenère is one of plums followed by the gradual emergence of blackberries and raspberries, together with liquorice, coffee, black pepper, tobacco and cigar box.

On the palate the wine is elegant, smooth and well structured with refreshing acidity highlighted by long flavors of black fruit and cedary spice. Well balanced and juicy with a long complex finish. Suffice it to say I added to my cellar... My liver loves me...

Finca Coronado 2004 Cuvee

July 21st 2010 00:09
OK. Got home after a long day. Gazed at the wine rack(s) with unseeing eyes for 10 minutes before I spotted this gem. I don’t know.. it must have been the Spanish win in Johannesburg.... Anyhooo... A grab, a quick temperature adjustment and a slow sip later I remembered why I bought this cuvee. Not as cheap as the Luzon I tasted the other day but way ahead in sensation as well.

90 points by Wine Advocate.

Founded by Miguel Angel de Gregorio this vinyard is located just on the border between Castile and Andalusia with a strong continental climate, characterized by hot dry summers and mild autums with hot days and cold nights. 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, 10% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot it has been aged 14 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiletered. It is inky/ruby/purple in color. Smoky, full bodied with a hint of creme de cassis it lingers and rewards you with its tannins. A perfect sip (or two, or... ) after a long Tuesday...

Cheap but good...

2008 Luzón Jumilla (Spain)

I had the 2007 Luzon last year and it is a great wine to take to a barbeque or a a party where you do not want to spend a lot of money but don't want to be embarrassed by bringing plonk.

The introductory wine from this estate. 89 points, Josh Raynold, International Wine Cellar: 65% Monastrell and 35% Syrah. Opaque ruby. Blackberry, cracked pepper and anise on the nose, with a suave floral overtone. Vibrant dark berry flavors are nicely framed by silky tannins and given depth by a note of bitter chocolate. A note of violet lingers on the juicy, gently sweet finish. Hard to imagine getting more complexity for the money.

The 2008 vintage in Jumilla was very successful, yielding wines with more weight and richness than 2007, though certainly not at the expense of complexity or balance. This blend of Monastrell and Syrah is once again full of dark cherry and plum fruits, with a hint of black olive and a slightly spicy licorice note to the finish. It's a terrific value to drink with a wide range of foods, particularly anything with a Mediterranean accent: grilled tuna with a black olive tapenade; a platter of Spanish cheeses and chorizo; lamb with garlic and rosemary....there endless possibilities for terrific food pairings with this delicious value.
