I know I talk about Salvo’s a lot, but I found a Salvo’s online that (gasp) I hadn’t been to before (surely not!). Salvo’s Carrum Downs is on a corner just off Dandenong Frankston Road, in an industrial area; it probably doesn’t get a lot of passing foot traffic, but seems to have a regular stream of shoppers that know about its location.
Nice easy layout with furniture, clothing, accessories and a homeware section. First surprise; an authentic Burberry bag for $30! I’m not a Burberry fan, but I’m kicking myself for not buying that bag at such a bargain price, its not there anymore because I went back to check. A lesson learnt – never think twice about merchandise in op shops, just buy it and worry about it later  Secondly, a gorgeous red wool/viscose duffle coat by Bauhaus for $30 had my name on it, you could say love at first site. I just couldn’t resist this beauty:

Consignment second hand clothing shops have been around for quite some time. How does this work? Simple; take your second hand labels into a consignment retail clothing shop, and agree on the retailer’s terms whereby if the item(s) sells, you will obtain a percentage of the sale, and the retailer will take the remainder

Melbourne bargain fashionista’s be aware of a new op shop in town. A new Red Cross Boutique opened its doors last Friday in Fitzroy Street, Brunswick. However this is an op shop with a difference; focussed on selling one off accessories; bags, shoes, scarves and the like, with no donated clothing.

An interesting article in last Friday’s MX newspaper ‘Wear’s Wallet’ asks how much we are wearing in clothing value. A UK study (funded by an insurance company) found that a majority of us are unaware of how much our threads really cost. Women reportedly wear an average of $1700 worth of clothes and accessories each day, with men surprisingly not far behind at $1550. That’s a scary thought isn’t it?

No time to get amongst the second hand threads during the week, so I must therefore dedicate at least an hour of my weekend seeking fashions of the recycled variety. What a pity my local church op shops are closed at the weekends, thankfully however, Salvos opens its doors all day Saturday, whoot.
My purchase: A delightful shirt for the little fellow in my life by JK Kids Gear. Very current fashion! Red, black and white long sleeve checked shirt, complete with roll up sleeves with button if required; paid for with spare change in my purse, $3. Nice
