Reality Bites and the whole existential dilema of our generation- i think....

March 27th 2008 14:52
I want to check in very quickly. this post will be horribly insubstantial but it was something I needed to write.

I fond that there are certain days in every month, maybe certain weeks in every year, that I spend lacing in and out of different textual influences that have dramatic affects on my life. like songs, movies, television or books. For example the week I read Jane Eyre I was in a constant state of enlightenment, as if my hoel world made sense because I had been evoked by a world so far away yet so close to my own existence.

so this week has been one of those weeks. everything seems to be right at a new beginning. I re watched season two battlestar galactica (don’t knock it its wildly tangled with existential issues that we all like talking about), have been completely consumed with my love of Aussie band The Panics (download, buy it burn it what ever it is just magic - don’t fight it - makes my blood run thin like water) and I have watched a couple of good movies the last being Reality Bites. Now I have seen this gem so many times but each time I do I feel somewhat more optimistic about my life and everything in it. you see consider this film to be a lasting conceit of life that has no meaning and is still ok with that. I mean how many times have we thought "is this really the job I want to be in?" "shouldn’t I be in a serious relationship now?" " is there something other that I should be saying or doing in order to be happier?" "should I be thinner/smarter/prettier....." and blah balah blah. this has become life for so many of us, a life that is riddled with a constant need of approval and self appreciation. what reality bites gives us is the acknowledgment that, yeah we a re in a generation that is bored and listless, that is lazy; but we are a generation that has knowledge. we know that nothing is certain and nothing will ever be perfected or we will never be enlightened. this may seem to be the post modern dilemma - should we be ok with this? can there be another way?

who cares!!! that’s right, life is empty and meaningless. this is not a negative, it is the liberation that we as overworked, over educated people need. it is the freedom to know that despite our "responsibilities" to do things we will be ok; that despite our struggles with our own identity and place in he world we will be ok.

yep that’s right everything will be fine.

this is what I got from Reality Bites. this and the realisation that Winona Ryder looks so great in red lipstick and Ethan Hawke is the eternal dirty philosopher.

now if only there was one of those in my Tuesday morning philosophy class.....

Ethan does it so well doesn't he?

By the way, just a small typographical criticism, constructive criticism, the word 'whole'.. you have "hoel", (7th line down from top).

However, it reads as an excellent phoentic style pronunciation!

As for the listless and unmotivated youth of today, this is just history repeating itself, I grew up through the sixties and seventies, and found out, to mature is to die; spiritually, socially and morally!

Mostly we discard our child-like good attributes when we 'mature', stop playing, laughing about nothing, day dreaming, we get serious, we get worried about jobs, houses, relationships, money, future, old age and death, when really, all we should concentrate on is.. the now!

Enjoy life, live and love to the upmost, care about others and be surrounded by good souls who care for you. That, to me, would be the epitome of a good life.
cheers
