When Teens Attack

August 25th 2008 11:28
Today my 14 year old got into trouble at school. She yelled at a boy in class and was reprimanded by her teacher.

And I'm so proud of her for it.

You see, the discussion had turned to the Australian diver who'd won gold at the Olympics and this boy in class was making it known that he was disgusted the diver had kissed his boyfriend in public. And my shy, studious, wouldn't say boo to a goose daughter gave him a piece of her mind. By all accounts, she put him in his place and shot him down with some intelligent argument. I wish I'd been there to witness it (and maybe to tell the teacher to shutup and let her talk (yell).

I'll just have to make do with the knowledge that I must be doing something right.

It's just not funny anymore

I like to laugh. I love having fun. Doesn't everyone? I mean, I can't imagine there are many people in the world who would seriously claim they hate having a good time. "Enjoy myself? Naa. Doesn't interest me at all."

So, if having a laugh is a desirable pastime, why is it so difficult for me to achieve?

I admit, I am a little hard to please in the humour department. I can't stand slapstick or toilet humour. Movies such as Super Bad or The Three Stooges or comedians like Jim Carrey or Rodney Rude irritate me. I detest most sit coms which tend to be formulaic and cater to the lowest common denominator. And everywhere I look, it seems that there are so many products available to the masses who enjoy this type of ‘entertainment’.

But where can I find entertainment consisting of the stuff I find fun?

I have always tended toward more intelligent humour. Wit, satire, that sort of thing. I like humour to sneak up and surprise me with a clever twist, not a cream pie to the face. I admire the stand up comics who give me their self deprecating tales of their ordinary lives without the exaggerated dramas complete with sound effects. The talk show host who provides political commentary tongue in cheek, the only way that subject matter should be served.

I don’t claim to be a great intellect and I certainly don’t possess anything remotely resembling a scathing wit. I’m just tired of being fed poor substitutes for comedy which require me to dumb down to endure the experience. So I ask:

Where should I look for my laughs?
Am I a minority of one when in this?
Am I a humour snob?

Actually, Casa de Ridley was quite hospitable. I had toast and coffee for breakfast and I didn't have to make it myself.

Plus I slept under a Spiderman blankie

Here is exactly what was presented in the 'continental breakfast'

2 X slices of bread (toaster available)
2 X miniature cereal packets (Just Right Corn Flakes)
1X Goulburn Valley fruit tub thingie *shudder*
milk
orange juice
little tubs of jam, honey, peanut butter.
1X jar of Vegemite

I do regret not taking the unopened packets of cereal home with me, after all, they were paid for.

Yes, I made it home. And I brought with me many great memories and hilarious anecdotes to last me quite a while.

Glen, thanks for that definition. A sad contrast to what was on offer this morning.

Hi ed!

Do you mean the blind furrowing creature with the huge paws and long snout?

Or are you referring to the term of endearment reserved for Aussie females with questionable morals and bad attitude?

This is a great thing that you do. I'm sure your friend appreciates the enormity of your gesture.

on Remembering Matthew Shepard

October 29th 2008 00:06
Thank you Ruby, so much more eloquently stated than my feeble attempt.

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."

Now, I hate having to raise the 'G' word at the best of times, but the sentiment here is somewhat appropriate. I don't mean that i would in any way want to change a person's sexual preference, religion or political beliefs etc, I just accept and rejoice in the fact that humans are diverse and free to choose.

I guess the word acceptance is my personal preference but hey, if the word tolerance is going to keep somebody from meeting the same fate as Matthew Shepard then great, tolerate all you like. Whatever works.
