So over Emo

I was exploring the “myspace” website the other day, a foreign venture for me as I tried to track down some long lost friends.
For those of you who may have been living under a rock for the past 5 years, Myspace is a website where pre-teens, teenagers and general attention-seekers worldwide gather to post hot pictures of themselves (much to the delight of paedophiles), boast about how many friends they have.
I came across a guy who is about 3 years younger than me who lives in the home town I grew up in. Much to my horror I discovered this once cute and fun loving boy had grown into “one of them”. I’m talking about Emo’s. For the sake of this post we shall refer to this guy as ‘Bobby’.
Now while I could come to accept this evil twist of fate as his own choice and put down his Emoness to just another phase he must go through in life (and the fact that he lives in QLD which has a scary number of Emos) I was taken aback by something he wrote in his “About me” section.
Bobby wrote that he hated conformists and stereotypes... Did I read that correctly? Were my eyes deceiving me? No! He hated conformists and stereotypes!?!? Now this is something that really bugs me about Emo’s. I will put up with the fact that you like shit music, dye your stupid hair black, wear red nail polish and eyeliner (even if you are a guy), don dog collars and black rimmed pseudo-intellectual glasses, but don’t EVER say that your are not a conformist or stereotype!!
Just what the hell is individual and non-conformist if not what you are doing to look and act exactly like every other Emo. Newsflash: If you are Emo, you ARE a stereotype and you ARE conformist. Get a dictionary and look up “conformity”. I’m sorry Bobby, I hope you see the light at the end of the tunnel one day…
