Wisdom & Friendship

June 23rd 2007 00:13
I caught up with an old friend last night, old friends are the best, there is nothing like sitting with someone who knows you and you are deeply connected to and having an endless conversation. You know those ones that meander along forever, twisting and turning; they take many different paths and never get boring...time becomes nothing except the annoying thing that tells you have to be somewhereand save the rest for another day that always feels too far away. You discover new things about each other when you think you know everything there is to know, one of my favourite things in life I think.

Anyhow as I was talking to my friend I remembered that years ago she totally changed my life with something that she said to me( of course she didnt even realise how much impact her words had on me) I told her that no matter what happens in life she will be in my heart forever because her coments changed my life and became part of me.......at the time she was studying cranial Osteopathy and at a course and the Lecturuer told her...."wisdom is the mind accepting the way things truly are" so simple, so true and so bloody hard to do but just knowing this simple thing has been an amazing thing for me. It totally made me look at life differently; stop fighting things that can't be changed, accept them, embrace them, move on....let them be and not allow them to interfere in your space, it truly is an amazing thing, I am not saying I am anywhere near wise so please don't think I am preaching. It is just such a beautiful way to look at things and has brought me a lot of peace so I thought I would share...

Are you Superstitious?

June 22nd 2007 23:56
I was just checking myself onto a flight online and was selecting my seat, 13A was available with a seat spare next to it, perfect, a good chance no-one will sit next to me if the flight doesnt get too full..what more do you want?(except First class of course but that is another whole story)......I couldn't bring myself to book the seat, I chose to sit 6 rows back which of course means its slower getting off the other end.....I mean maybe it was the fact I have only had like two hours sleep in two days that made me get really spooked but I sat there for like 5 minutes and came to the conclusion that I really couldn't book it.....sems very stupid not sitting in a Seat because of a number which is essentially an assigned label.....anyhow it is what it is and I am sititng in 19D
I don't really know what superstition is and I certainly have never considered myself superstitious is the past but I guess on some subconscious level I totally am, very strange beast the human brain, especially mine on no sleep.....

So my sister dragged me to a marketing seminar last night, I'll have to say I am really not enjoying this journey into the Psyche of how we get tricked into buying craaap we don't need on a daily basis....As I look through my house and all my possessions I am beginning to see them is a whole new light....

Did i ever really want them in the first place or did some spannerhead with a marketing degree decide he wanted to sell it to me and I fell for it.....

Let me set the scene by saying this was actually disguise a seminar on marketing so he could sell us HIS dodgy marketing tools package, we are talking real money here people. One of the packages was about 3k, not a laughing matter...and people fell for it, check books were out.

He told us the "secrets" of a successful marketing campaign. Problem, Aggravate, Solve, Call to Action..... ie you identify a problem someone has or a weakness, aggravate and point that weakness out to them, offer your services as a knight in shining armour to solve the "problem" they created in your mind to start with, then close that deal baby and call them to action, ie buy the product. disgraceful behaviour....... The whole idea is to play on somebodies emotions to make them think they need your product. for example if a mother has a child that cries (all Babies do right) you make them think the baby cries because she doesn't own their product , they make you feel like you'd be ireesponsible for not going out and buying it because their product will stop your Baby crying, then they offer you a "special to get you over the line" The most successful campaigns have a double call to action which is handing over your personal details somehow as well so they can continue to brain wash you in the future........very ethical.....

It was amazing to sit back and see how many people rushed out of the room to buy his products because if you were the first 17 you got free tickets to his Super- Seminar selling more of his products over four wholes days.

I love an Entrpreneur so good luck to him but think twice Orblers before you make that purchase, Do you really want that product or are they making you think you want it.....Because you know like marketing gives a product credibility due to the Celebrity element..........he taught us some killer copy secrets Ill share in my next Article...

An observation on Blogging eitquette.. and a lesson in Karma, co-incidence and sense

Do you tip?.. To click or not to click that is the question.

Up until recently I was a very determined non-clicker of all Ads, I was suspicious that every Ad I clicked would lead to some rogue web site that would deposit a trojan on my computer and organised crime in Russia or some obscure county ending in via would steal my identity and I would be inadvertently aiding and abetting global terrorism.....

Then I began to realise - thanks to a few Orble posts- the lack of money in Blogging compared to the effort writers put in; I became aware of all the poor bloggers out there who write their hearts out &
need me to click on their Ads so they can make a living as they can't even promote their sites to friends in fear of disturbing the adsense gods.. I saw the light. SO i have begun what I consider tipping. If I like a story and I get a lot out of it I click on the Ads on their site to thank them for their work. I also noticed that most of the articles I like generally have Ads that are of a Topic of interest to me and clicking can take me on adventures I never imagined.-

For example today I clicked on a link and I ended up finding a Website that is very useful for my Business...Karma perhaps, co-incidence likely or it just plain makes sense.. .. the words link to the topics, you read the topics you are interested in so the Ads will take you to interesting places..simple....I don't know how much the new site I found will help my business in dollar terms but it will save me a lot of time and time is money.

I have seen the light; clicking is good for all, to click that is the answer..

PS I am aware that I am probably not the first person to think of this or write about it - & this is probably common Blogging etiquette that I was unaware of until recently- I just want to share the experience.

whinge box open - I was walking through Sydney Uni a few weeks ago and right in full view of practically the whole campus was a couple going for it.......completely obvlivious that the patch of grass they were lying on was in full view of everybody - or maybe not- I'll have to say it brought out the absolute prude in me,,,,who the hell are these kids who think that it is OK to fornicate in public.

I was actually amazed to notice that I was the only one who seemed to care at all, everyone else just seemsed to be happy to have a look and walk on by. Maybe they were secretly as disgusted as I was or maybe I am just old.... but honestly why is it necessary to publicly show affection.

I mean we all do it, so why do some people feel the need to do it with the whole world watching.... There is nothing worse than sitting in a restaraunt where two people are making out under your nose. It either makes you feel bad that you are single or you feel like you should be doing it too.....it is extremely rude and inconsiderate and Ill have to say the older I get the more I hate it
.

ah well maybe its just me who is offended, so Ill pull my head in - whing box closed -

Let me set the background.
Recently I have started a small business so have been trying to learn how to Advertise my Business in a smart and economical way. In endeavoring to do this I have purchased a few off the shelf marketing books. Now I have actually studied marketing 14 years ago as part of a Commerce Degree so I thought I knew a fair bit and was just brushing up and honing my skills.

Little did I know I was to enter an entire new world of manipulating the sub-conscious.
To my horror I realised as smart as I thought I was I had been falling for cheap advertising tricks for years. Now I am aware I see the tricks everywhere.

I know we have all heard of subliminal advertising, product placement and the likes and we are pretty aware of these things...but there is a new level of this trickery going on out there. I found that I could count on numerous occasions falling for those tricks; I am sure I can't be alone.

The Basic Theory
In a nut shell the basic theory works on the premise that the unconscious mind is responsible for most of the decisions you make - often without even communicating the reason why to the conscious mind - Therefore if you market to the unconscious mind you are going direct to the "source" of the decision making process. The way these guys get to us goes beyond the stereotypical subliminal methods - Brad Pitt drinking a coke in Oceans 11 etc - way deeper than that.

Without even knowing it these guys are taking you from a position where you would never buy a certain product to having your subconscious decide that it is ok to buy it; before you know it you own it. They do this by taking you into what is termed a Kinesthetic state - to make a decision to purchase you have to have experienced a Kinesthetic sensation about a product i.e. visualised yourself owning it. In essence they manipulate your mental state from your usual passive state - whatever that may be - and move you into a kinesthetic state. Not me you say. Well let me give you an example and let's see who of us out there have fallen for it.

Example
Days after reading my new hot shot marketing book, a Pest control company cold called me to let me know they were in my area for only a few days and were offering a special deal to have my house fumigated. I listed all the reasons why I didn't want it - yes the girl had all the answers - then when she had answered all my questions she simply said to me, I only have 11.30am Thursday and 2pm Friday left, which suits you best? She took the conversation form me having objections straight to what time I wanted them to come. By this act she took me past the point of agreeing to make the purchase, into the next step of booking a time - straight into the Kinesthetic state where I was to get my credit card out and make the payment, I had never said yes but my mind thought I had. Luckily I had just read the book so I laughed and told her to stick it; however she got me they would have won; this is what I am talking about. It happens on different levels and in different forms all day everyday. I am pretty sure the sales girl would not have had a clue what she was doing either; it was probably in the manual...Once you answer all their objections tell them there is limited spaces them and get them to chose between two times....so simple it sickens me.

Many of the books I have read are quite open and cocky about the fact that this is pure manipulation, of course they have no remorse. Hey they believe in the product they are selling, it really will solve all your problems and make your life better, you just don't know it yet!

There are many tools these guys use, if there are a few people out there interested in this, let me know and I'll do a 101 article. This experience has certainly made me wonder about quite a few things I have been buying.

Happy Reading.
