Valentines day(.com)

February 13th 2008 13:58
There's an episode of The Simpsons which features a bunch of corporate lackeys sat around a table discussing how to milk the public for some more money. "I know!" One of them shouts, "we'll invent a 'love day'." Cue 'love day' where Marge is giving presents to the rest of the unimpressed family.
For me Valentines day is simply The Simpsons 'love day' with a pink ribbon tied around it. There's no denying that after surviving xmas and new year without declaring bankruptcy the last thing I want is to be forced to spend more money on frivolous rubbish, just to try and prove to my girlfriend that I care about her. "Look babes, how can you deny I love you? I've bought you a box of chocolates and some flowers!?"

The whole Valentines day thing, is just another excuse for the people with partners to either a)spend more money or b)have an argument for not doing a), for the singletons it's either a)another reason to lament the fact there's no-one to buy any gifts for or b) the worse case scenario buying gifts for someone who's not our significant other- and facing rejection. The whole thing is a chocolate coated nightmare.
Don't get me wrong I like certain holidays, xmas for me , is actually very enjoyable, the only time the whole family sits round a table without a will being read out. Easter is great for the kids aswell, they're already obese so a few easter eggs won't make a difference, and as for birthday's well they're even better 'cos that's your own special day- unless you're a twin (or Jesus).
Valentines day is just another day which for me is less significant than Pancake day- I love pancakes and am of the opinion they should only ever be eaten on the aforementioned day. I remember as a child getting an anonymous valentine's card (in my mum's handwriting) telling me how special I was, this continued until I was 25, in fact I still miss it.

Surely Anniversaries are the perfect time to forget to get her something, we don't need another reason to split up, no doubt the people at Inter-Flora, Thorntons, Black & Decker, etc, don't agree.
Just remember if you do forget to get her something on Valentines day there's always 'love day' as the perfect chance to make it up to her.
