Juno

March 10th 2008 13:07
Just got back from the movies... I went to see Juno, starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera - I'm sure you've all heard about it as its gained heaps of rave reviews. It was either Juno or the movie with Jack Nicholson and I didn't really feel like that tonight. You have to be in a certain mood for Jack.

Juno was a very good movie, sort of bordering on an indie flick but still had the commercial quality that attracts your average cinema goer. The soundtrack is great and consists of a lot of quirky folk indie tunes. I particularly liked the song at the end of the movie performed by the two lead actors! Cute!

Juno is a 16 year old girl that lives in the suburbs and attends a suburban high school. She is a bit quirky - your arty, musical type - yet she is liked by most people, even the "cool" kids at school. Juno falls pregnant to her best friend and then has to decide what she is going to do about her situation. The idea of Juno being pregnant comes as a complete shock to her dad and step mum as Juno is barely mature enough to look after herself. It's a really innocent story, which is a fairly realistic insight into the mind of a teenager who really isn't ready to bring a child into this world and just wants to go on living a normal life as it was before.

The humour is honest and Ellen Page is a great actress, very believable and completely natural on-screen. I enjoyed the movie a lot, as it was a refreshing change from the typical box office comedy. I wasn't convinced by Jennifer Garner's character, to be honest, but the overall casting was great and it was nice to see a movie do so well without having all the big names attached.

I'd like to hear what you thought of it, so drop me a comment if you have time!

Sick Long Weekend

March 7th 2008 05:00
It's weird how your body knows when to get sick...usually when you have so many things planned in advance.

Get this: I was supposed to have a day off work yesterday, and believe me, it was a welcome day off, because I work wayyy too much and have two jobs so any time off is appreciated. Of course, the day before my "day off," I started feeling a bit crook; slightly feverish, light-headed, a dull ache in my throat... "Ahh its probably just a little bug, it's nothing!" is what I said to myself at the time. I also find it really strange how people automatically assume you're pregnant as soon as you say you don't feel very well if you're a female! Geez...

Well the day off came around, and the first thing I noticed... runny nose, chesty cough, sore lungs, sore head, sore throat - yep, this was no "little bug" - it was the full syptoms of the dreaful flu. I was wrong.

I had to get my car fixed, so unfortunately I could not sleep the flu off and I also had an appointment with my chiropractor (who automatically knew there was something wrong with my lungs just by cracking my back - which was so cool!) He also gave me these "lollies" which I was initially so excited about - because I have the enthusiasm of a three-year-old and lollies amuse me - but they tasted like crap and were some natural remedy for colds and flu... yuck! They did make my chest feel heaps better though.

I have now taken today off work too, and feel slightly guilty as it is a long weekend and my team leader is a bit of a hard-ass. But it's not like I am having a great time sitting at home in my pj's, coughing constantly, with a supply of tissues by my side. I need to go to the doctor for a certificate so I somehow need to muster some strength to get up off my sick ass.

I also needed to say no to two social events due to this untimely illness. Yes, it really is just wonderful how our bodies know to get sick at the right time! Hmmm, give me another tissue!

30... The New 20?

February 20th 2008 14:49
Don't you just love those funny emails that somehow get sent to you by each of your friends individually? There was one email I received the other day, which was supposed to contain "Motivational Posters," but it was totally wrong and possibly insulting to every individual. It really made me laugh though, and it brought on the question of being "politically correct" or "PC."

We were discussing being un-PC with a mate at work shortly after reading that email, and came to the conclusion that modern society has really gone crazy. Being PC has reached a whole new level. It seems that no one can laugh at themselves anymore and surely this can't be a good thing in the long run.

The same mate ended up trying to guess my age (I don't remember how we got onto this topic)... and of course he guessed wrong. Now, usually I am made out to be a lot younger than I am, probably due to the way I act - who knows - however, in this instance I was made out to be a little bit older. When I told my mate exactly how old I was, he became very remorseful - almost as if it was a bad thing to have been slightly off the mark.

To be quite honest, I was actually flattered that he even thought I was older, since it doesn't happen very often, but his reaction reminded me how sensitive everyone is about ageing and how its totally un-PC to even mention one's age.

Take my sister for instance, who recently decided she wants to get botoxed because she spoke a 40-year-old lady at her work who has had it done and apparently she looks great. Since when has it become normal to stick needles of toxic poison into your face, to paralyze your muscles, so that you can look younger? I mean, I am not anti-surgery at all, but it just amazes me that this has become the norm.

If everyone is so worried about ageing, then why are we choosing to do everything later in life? These days, 30 is the new 20. We don't get married young anymore - I believe the median age for females is about 28 now - and the average age women start popping out children is edging closer to our early 30's, even though we know that female fertility is at its prime in the early 20's.

I believe the whole preoccupation with age is that we just get so used to being at our "peak" - the time of our lives - when everything seems to go well for us and everything we do seems to be within our control or our choice, such as "I don't want to have children yet because I am having fun," or, "I want to travel the world as I'm not ready to settle down."

The older we get, we start to re-evaluate things and then we start to worry that maybe we should have done things sooner. Hence, the reason why we don't want to get older, as that just means we have less time to accomplish everything because we know our bodies won't wait for us to decide when. Even so, I still can't quite understand how botox will stop the years from ticking by...but at least we will look good in our old age.

Funny that, considering I studied Media and Multimedia at university and supposedly have knowledge and like for all things internet-related...
