The US Presidential Election: Some Questions.
October 30th 2008 07:11
This isn't a usual rant, more some open questions for American voters. I am neither American or knowledgeable about American politics, so some of this may be obvious, but please humor me.
1. How much does party affiliation matter? Do you guys vote for parties or candidates? If you vote Democrat, would you continue to do so if the candidate was a total douche? Likewise for republicans?
2. What matters more? Candidates or Policy? Everyone knows this campaign has mainly been each party trying to discredit their opponent, so does this indicate that the candidate is far more important than the policies they are planning?
The answer to number 2 really interests me, so any responses would be welcome. Personally I vote for whatever party I feel will best serve the country, and that has nothing to do with who is leading it... If the party has very sound policy ideas, I would vote for them even if they were led by a complete twat.
3. Does it really matter who Obama has associated with in the past? I mean, come on. I have hung out with thieves, hard-core drug dealers, drug addicts, strippers and prostitutes, but that doesn't mean I am an awful person (that's just a coincidence). I mean.... only Jesus (if you buy into the Book) was perfect, right? So why do you expect a presidential candidate to be perfect? They are, after all, just people.
4. How can you call Democrats greedy when Sarah Pallin spent 150k on clothes?
5. Why is it such a big deal if Obama was born in the States or not? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's still ok to be born outside the states its because a parent is stationed overseas in the military, right? So my question is... Why is the child of a liutenant stationed overseas more American than the child of, say, an accountant working overseas?
I'm sorry if these questions seem a little slanted towards the Obama camp... these are just things that have been running through my head.
