Random Musings on Life, Love and Everything - by Someone

An Open Letter to Aimee Dent

July 10th 2009 00:28
Before I begin, for the purpose of this rant I am assuming Aimee Dent is a persona of Alt_Ed. If I am wrong, please Ms Dent, correct away.

[BeginDummySpit]

To Ms_Dent

First and foremost, I blame the Orble exodus on you. Because of you, several of the most entertaining writers on this site have decided to call it quits.

Why, you might ask? Why would I blame you? Simple. Before you came along, Orble had some lines in the sand, so to speak. An uneasy truce, whereby those that didn't agree tended to avoid each other. You may see your 'clever' little persona as a way to expose bigotry and bias...

But I have another perspective.

I see you as a shitstirrer, plain and simple. You couldn't stir any more shit using your own identity because you were notorious: People had learned to ignore you and delete you. So you created a new one. People wised up to that too, after a while.

What were you to do now? You couldn't stir any more shit from this side of the fence, so you decided to jump over. No one would expect you to do that! Indeed, I reckon everyone was blindsided by your little ploy.

And now that line in the sand is gone, and alot of the writers that kept this site vibrant and entertaining are jumping ship. I ask you now, who's left for you to harass? Everyone here will soon conform to your beliefs, and everyone that doesn't will soon be driven off or just get sick of it and take off of their own accord.

Soon you shall find this to be a dull and lifeless place, and you will have no one to blame but yourself.

Really, was it that hard to just engage in adult conversation? Couldn't you just leave them be, and stick to those you saw as friends? What drove you to harass and insult, and eventually purge, all of those with differing opinions? Why weren't you content with sticking to a friendly debate? If things got heated, there was no reason to resort to personal attacks: If anyone does it, it proves more about them than the people they are insulting.

And you can't say I'm just gay-bashing now: I respect homosexual rights, I have gay friends and wholeheartedly support everything that they stand for.... but I still do not respect you or what you have done to this site.

So Ms. Dent, in closing: Fuck you for ruining Orble. Life is going to be a lot more dull and grey, thanks to your efforts.

edit: I know I said I don't like personal attacks, or attacking people for their opinions. Well, I probably agree with alot of Ms Dent's opinions... I'm attacking him/her for their actions.

So, I was having a discussion in the (huge) comments section over on a popular post, and as usual for Orble things got a little out of hand. Mind you, I don't think I acted badly.

One user came on with a little dry sarcasm (and I am a total sucker for sarcasm), and the blog-operator jumped all over her, so to speak. I believe she said that a Monkey could provide a better contribution to the discussion, or something along those lines. Now, I am not here to debate the merits of sarcasm: it is obviously the highest form of wit . I had noticed from a previous entry that the blog owner (Lets call her Ms. Dont) seemed to be a little hostile to people with alternative viewpoints, so I (innocently I thought) asked her if this was the case. Well, another blogger (let's call him Dame) seemed to also be taking offense as well.

Actually, I don't think the backstory is particularly important, just so you have an idea of where I'm coming from.

Anyway, the point is... I was having a meaningful discussion on the difference between cults and religions before all the flaming started. After I was accused of sending threatening pm's, all of my comments were deleted.

I have this question: If someone has stepped out of line, would you delete all of their comments? Even the ones that you agree are civil and reasonable, just because you think they stepped out of line a little further down the track?

Secondly, I was accused by Mr. Dame of badgering Ms. Dont. I think the term used was a 'pecking party'. Question 2: What the hell is a pecking party? It sounds like a party involving a lot of chicks... which is a good thing, right?

Thirdly: How the f*ck do you let people know you are joking on the internet? I have tried ending sarcastic comments with , I have tried ending them with smiling emoticons... and yet, some people still take them seriously.

Fourth: back to the badgering thing. I was under the impression that that was how a discussion worked. Hear me out: Ms Dont made comments. I responded. She responded. I responded. That's how a discussion works, right? And yet apparently I was harassing her every time she said something... isn't that how you discuss things? With a back and forth exchange of words?

Fifth and final question: If somebody makes an accusation against someone else, does the accusee have the right to view all of the evidence held by the accuser? As I mentioned, I was accused of sending a threatening pm to Ms. Dont. Following that, I left a comment and sent a pm asking for a copy of the alleged message. However, I have so far been ignored, and the comment containing the request was deleted (as was a comment containing a copy of my sent messages, with none to Ms. Dont). Do you think I have a right to see this message that I was accused of writing, even if the accusations have since been deleted? I have already contacted Jon, so I have a feeling I'll get to see the message sooner or later, but I thought it was common courtesy in these situations to throw all of your cards on the table? Am I wrong?

This is not a review, oh no. This is an order.

If you haven't seen The Hangover, go and watch it. If you've already seen it, go and watch it again.

I kid you not, this movie is pure awesome. I saw I Love You Man a few weeks ago, and I thought that would probably be the best comedy I would see for at least half a year or so... but no!

This movie had me in stitches. It is ridiculously funny, and even though I had high expectations, they were all fulfilled and more.

Why are you still reading this? You should be off to the cinema by now!

Q: Why is Year One Going to Suck?

June 19th 2009 23:46
A: Because they have shown the commercial on tv every second ad for the last few weeks. Good movies don't need that kind of exposure, they generate their own buzz. The last movie I saw with advertising overdone this much was Push, and that was just terrible.

A: Because I am a funnier writer than their writers. Let me give you an example

Before I start, a quick note: My graphs from Word don't translate into Orble, so I have cut them (and all references to them) out. Therefore I require a little bit of trust... so if I say prices fall or quantity rises, I do have charts to back my assertions up, they just won't show here. For anyone interested, I would be more than happy to forward a full copy of the essay, charts included. Now, on with the show...

Haha... Silly Christians

May 6th 2009 02:22
I got given a free bible the other day at my university. It was being given out by a member of the Gideons, an association that puts bibles in hotels, at hospitals, and in the hands of secondary students (and uni students, apparently).

In the front of the bible is a short prayer, translated into 17 of the world's most popular languages. One of these is Indonesian

Yes, that was a news headline a few days back in response to the spread of swine flu.

Personally, I cannot decide whether this is a public service being offered to the Australian people, or just panic mongering

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. I didn't vote for you, but I had such high hopes... namely that you weren't so clueless as to turn our economy into a 'shitstorm' (as you would put it). But alas, I my hopes were dashed.

Where to start with the problems with directly paying people money

Regrets

April 14th 2009 07:37
My computer is (finally) fixed, and at long last, I'm back.

So, a friend said to me the other day that he could not understand why anyone would live with regrets. He hadn't spoken to a girl that he thought he should have spoken to, and he couldn't figure out why he hadn't. In his opinion, the only reason people live with regrets is because of fear, because at the time they don't have the courage to act as they should and regret not doing so
