Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life
Asked why he put all of his rivals for the Republican presidential campaign -- those he surprisingly defeated -- into his cabinet, Lincoln said that they were the best men, and the nation was in peril and needed them. A more likely explanation could be summed up in a phrase favored by former US president Lyndon B. Johnson: "It's better to have your enemies inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in."

Celebrating the weird and wonderful is hardly exclusive to the Texas but Texans seem to approach the unusual with fervor. Texas certainly has its own clutch of unique events, from animal and vegetable worship to strange extreme sports. Maybe Texans are just trying to amuse themselves...
Here are some of my favorites

In the interest of international humor, and that Austin, TX sister city is Adelaide South Australia, I will add an old Aussie-Texas joke, probably as old as 1942-45.
"A couple of Texans got off a plane in Sydney. The one who had been there before was briefing the other one on what to expect: "They're OK, these Aussies, but you'll find they take themselves a bit too seriously sometimes, so you'll have to humor them

The word "Texas" conjures up a vast array of images: cowboys, ranches, beaches, forests, mountains, and plains, all with diverse cultures. The variety of lifestyles and cuisine exists simultaneously in my home state. There is an amazing variety of foods introduced by each of the ethnic groups that came here.
Texas, as a unified entity, has existed under six flags: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. In addition to these six major influences on the state's culture, twenty-eight major ethnic groups settled in various parts of Texas where native Indians had inhabited Texas for thousands of years. Each brought their skills at preparing the foods of their native homelands. In many instances, they introduced new food items to the area. They also developed new ways of preparing the native ingredients that they found in Texas. These dishes formed the basis of an ever-evolving "Texas Cuisine

Another Texas tradition is country music. Country music was always a staple at my house: Johhny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, etc... There is nothing like a Country song to allow you the experience of blessed melancholia. When I feel crappy I have a mix CD that I put on to aid in this pursuit.
Included are tracks: Here's A Quarter: Travis Tritt

I watched this news report last night and was stunned. Police in Watagua, Texas ( suburb of Fort Worth) , said a videotape found in a search for stolen goods appeared to show two teenagers persuading a 2-year-old boy and his 5-year-old brother to smoke marijuana. The children’s mother was asleep in a nearby bedroom and their grandmother was at work. In the video, the children are called "potheads" and a man can be seen placing a marijuana cigarette into a baby's mouth. In another part of the video a boy is seen smoking on his own. At one point the children were also asked if they "have the munchies."

Welcome to Texas' Dumbest News
1993 -- David Bridges, 24, was arrested in Grapevine, Texas, in January and charged with stealing a television set from a home. That getaway had been successful, but he was caught and arrested after he went back to the home because he had neglected to take the remote control.

A favorite summertime excursion of mine included driving across the bridge over Lake Bob Sandlin in wandering cousin's 1957 highland green chevrolet roadster with its yellowed, vinyl protecting the surf green upholstery. I remember a story about a local bootlegger and richest man in the town. It seems that this man was a collector of cars. As the odometer would reach a certain number, this man would drive his cars into his pond, which is now covered by the lake. He couldn't bear to sell or tow the cars to the local wrecking yard, He figured that at least the fish would have a place to hide and he would know the perfect spot to fish. To the west, one was awestruck by the water generating plant which appeared to be a fairy castle with its flickering lights illuminating the fog rising from the lake on moonless nights. I fancy that pixies darted in and out of the watery car graveyard whispering tales of summer's past.

Next week, the bull dozers are coming to demolish more of Fry Street. I am saddened to see that even more of Denton's history will soon be gone. I was thinking about one of my favorite breakfast joints of all time that resided there for many years.
For those of you who regard yourself as breakfast connoisseurs---take heed. Back in the day across the street from the zebra painted cinderblock Fry St. records and Tapes (which was really a front for a head shop), and caddy cornered from the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity house with its broken out windows, a Jimi Hendrix tapestry hanging from an upstairs window, and rotting settees resided Jim's Diner. Jim's Diner served the breakfast of champions, guaranteed to clog every last artery, since its opening on August 21, 1939
