Hissy Fit Hall of Shame

July 31st 2007 04:37
I was recently reading about Amy Whine-house’s recent “erratic behavior” in Cornwall at a concert benefiting the Eden Project. The New Zealand Herald reports that “during her performance she appeared on the brink of tears, hitting herself in the face with her microphone as the lyrics to her songs seemed to slip her mind and screaming "F**k it, f**k it, f**k it" at the audience before leaving the stage.” My grandmother called such behavior “hissy fits” which is a very Southern expression for a temper tantrum. Good Lord maybe girlfriend just needs a nap or a time out in the “naughty chair” to get it together. My guess is she just has a headache from all of that hair. More on this story

Today the weather was wicked. so I decided to get my freak on by dusting off my fabulous funk collection. There is something so satisfying about listening to 60s and 70s funk on vinyl during a rainstorm. Who doesn't love the musical groove of soul, jazz and R&B combined to make catchy danceable tunes? (Didn't get as much done around the house as I thought I would....had to take several dance breaks). Readers here is a snapshot of today's rootsy musical journey.

There may be any number of pop songs that mention food, but far fewer are the tracks that are actually about it. 'Strawberry Fields Forever' does not concern itself with fruits, you wouldn't want to taste Frank Zappa's 'Burnt Weeny Sandwich', and when Robert Plant asks you to 'squeeze my lemon', he's not in need of help preparing summertime drinks.

I read there's a new feminist movement of knitting clothes with friends. I've got nothing against knitting. I miss the days when I had hope of kickass female rockers getting a foothold in the music industry. I long for "new generation" of performers like Chryssie Hynde, Joan Jett, Ann Wilson and 1990s era Courtney Love. These bitches played really loud guitar and shouted a lot. I tire of the feminist emanations of some of the Lilith Fair acts. I just want to rock!

A week of uproar over the use of dead rockers images in a series of Dr. Martens ads has concluded today with the firing of the agency that created them. The famous footwear's parent company, Airwair Ltd., apologized in a statement for the ads' use of the images of dead rockers Kurt Cobain, Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone, and Sid Vicious wearing Dr. Martens in heaven. The company said that it has terminated its relationship with advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi, which created the ads. For more reading Adlong blog This coupled with the Wallabies loss got me thinking..... I miss Bon Scott of ACDC, Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon, Duane Allman of the Allman brothers, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Keith Moon of the Who, Bradley Nowell of Sublime, Randy Rhoads of Quiet Riot, Chris Whitley, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, just to name a few

Today I was reading an article about "Grassmusic". "Grassmusic" is a musical salute to weed by cannabis aficionados . This “grass roots" movement has enjoyed steady popularity for the past 40 years. I guess I underestimated the level of member dedication. This group has even created a manifesto (no mean feat there believe me)

I really appreciate a well put together live show I love it when a show draws you in and doesn't let you out or when a band brings its audience members to its knees and leaves them begging for more. But what if the opposite occurs? What about crappy ass pretentious over rated bands? I have been to concerts where "free" would have been too high a price to pay...

My top five most disappointing concerts

Today's post means no disrespect to the families of rockstars who have met their untimely death in car crashes, plane wrecks, drug overdoses, drive by shootings, etc...... or any who will do so in the future.....

Today while I was negotiating a settlement agreement with a couple who were figthing over who would retain their membership at an exclusive country club, my mind began to wander. (A very dangerous predicament indeed

Wikipedia defines a "protest" song as

A protest song is a song which protests problems in society such as injustice, racial discrimination, war, globalization, inflation, social inequalities, incarceration, and global warming. Protest songs are generally associated with folk music, but more recently they have been produced in all genres of music. Such songs become popular during times of social disruption among social groups.

What's on Jesus' iPod?

July 5th 2007 23:25
I am putting together a sermon for church that I will be giving at the end of the month. In my research for "material" I came across a 2005 article entitled "What's on Jesus' iPod?"written by Mark Morford and published in the San Francisco Gate. It is one of my all time favorite pieces of writing. I am sure that most of you have read it.

Today I was looking through my music library and came across Steve Marin's hit from 1978...King Tut. This got me to thinking about my favorite novelty songs. A novelty song is a popular tune that is either written and performed as a novelty or that becomes a novelty when removed from its original context. Regardless of which of these two categories applies, the assumption is that the song is popular because of its novelty, because it sounds different from everything else being played on the radio.

There are some days when you don't get a lot accomplished (and don't want to). You my be filled with apathy or maybe the life has been sucked out of you due to life circumstance. Today was like that for me. It started when I began my day listening to Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good."
