Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life

Ramble On - June 2007

Okay folks today I heard "Wings Beneath My Wings" in the elevator on my way to a collaborative law meeting. I know that this song is usually relegated to weddings, funerals, graduations, scout functions, and old folks homes. I was surprised how irritated I was at hearing it. The song is such a downer and so incredibly snarky. My teeth were decaying just listening to it. I will have to say this song is best sung totally trashed during karaoke night at your local bar

Ch Ch Changes: David Bowie

June 27th 2007 14:40
I was introduced to David Bowie back in the day by a fellow student. Her tastes tilted towards the sensitive, misunderstood or deranged poet genre and Bowie fit the bill. This is hands down my favorite song of his...although I have many of his albums on vinyl and on CD.

Changes began as a nightclub song parody. He considered it a "throwaway song" and was surprised that during concerts the audience would ask for it by name. Bowie said in a Rolling Stone interview that he had "no idea it was going to become such a hit". He also cited "Changes" as his "theme song." Bowie once appeared on stage with a circus elephant called "Changes

What is Your Favorite Breakup Song

June 26th 2007 19:27
Something must be in the Texas air. This week has been fraught with folks ending relationships. He's left the toilet seat up for the last time. Her recording of Gilmore Girls over Fear Factor on the TiVO has come to an end. Guys and gals are asking Miswanderlust how to overcome the awkward prolonged talk about how things "just aren't working out". They want an end to the tearful diatribe about how their significant other is so much less significant than they were before. It IS me not You...I am tired of your shit... I say celebrate it with a song.

Great Road Trip Songs

June 22nd 2007 04:24
I love to take road trips and drive with the windows rolled down and the moon roof open...especially in beautiful weather like today blaring my favorite music. When I travel, I like to put together iPod groupings that fit the theme or motif of my travels. I adore these "musical pilgrimages. During my last last trip through the South I put together some of my Southern Fried favorites: Allman Brothers, Little Feat, Kings of Leon, Skynrd, SRV, James Gang, Ryan Adams, Slobberbone, The Band, Drive by Truckers, Black Crowes, The Outlaws, ... just to name a few.

On an earlier post, I discovered that Yoda76 and I were in the "mutual admiration" club for Hayseed Dixie... a band that sings "hillbilly" versions of AC/DC Hayseed Dixie website. The term "cover version" originally implied a rival version of a tune recorded by an artist subsequent to an "original version" . Now covers refer to any remake of a song. This got me to thinking about cover songs in general.

Bo told me about a nifty podcast called Coverville link to website that focuses on cover songs - . The show is produced and hosted by Brian Ibbott, in his home in Arvada, Colorado. Really a gas. (Love his wife when she is a "guest" on the program). I also stumbled across a great coversong database called Second Hand songs Website link

Under Pressure: Queen

June 16th 2007 02:52
Recently Dusk posted a comment regarding how Vanilla Ice sampled “Under Pressure” for "Ice, Ice, Baby. I had already begun researching info regarding this Queen masterpiece (in my humbe opinion). “Under Pressure” (initially entitled “People on the Streets”) was recorded at an impromptu session in Montreux, Switzerland. A collaboration with David Bowie, this song is credited to "Queen with David Bowie" because the B-side of the single is Queen's "Soul Brother." It was recorded at an impromptu session in Montreaux, Switzerland. According to Queen bass player John Deacon, Freddie Mercury did most of the songwriting on this, although everyone contributed. Deacon stated that "the lyrics deal with how pressure can destroy lives, but love can be the answer."

Sugarhill Gang: Rapper's Delight

June 15th 2007 01:17
Today I was putting together an iPod grouping together of favorite high school songs. Rapper's Delight was a staple at every party I attended. I especially enjoyed watching my plastered friends attempt to sing it. Oh I wish I had a dollar for every time I sang at the top of my lungs "Ho-tel, Mo-tel, Hol-i-day Inn." (Do not attempt this song at your local karaoke bar...it is too damn long) I also loved "Apache". My friends had such dirty revisions of that song. [wink]

"Rapper's Delight" was the first rap song to enter the US Top 40. Rap was considered a fad at the time, and many people thought that Sugarhill Gang was a novelty act. The group was put together by Sylvia Robinson, owner of Sugarhill Records, to take advantage of the rap music that was gaining popularity at New York City block parties. She picked 3 local unknown rappers for the group… Big Bank Hank, Wonder Mike, and Master Gee. Some members of the early Hip Hop scene thought the group was a sham, but it became very popular in clubs and had a huge impact

Mrs. M posed this question to me

would you want to write one all time classic song that stands the test of time (My Sharona) or would you rather have a long(ish) career with what will end up being relatively forgetful songs?

Girl You Want: Devo

June 11th 2007 03:51

Devo achieved dance club greatness with "Whip It ". This Devo-tee prefers dancing her ass off to their earlier hit "Girl U Want". During an interview Devo member Jerry Casale was quoted as saying, "Devo didn't sit around and try to write hits, but when people liked "Girl U Want" and we wanted to key on that, we thought it made sense, we thought it was an easy song to like - it's very poppy, it's got a good hook. And it had subject matter that is more typical because here's Devo talking about girls

Good Girls Don't: The Knack

June 10th 2007 23:16
Aside from looking like the sort of fake new wave band you'd see on 21 Jumpstreet, L.A. power popsters The Knack were - lyrically-speaking - the sleaziest band to ever 'shift units' to teenagers. I loved 'em. My girlfriends and I went to a Knack concert in 1979, were chased by a guy in a gorilla suit out in the parking lot after ending our evening up close and personal. with these "Beatles wannabes."

The Knack recorded their debut album "Get The Knack" in eleven days for eighteen-thousand dollars. It went platinum in '79. Not a bad return on investment for Capitol Records. This album sold five million copies and had one of the biggest commercial debuts in rock history. The song “My Sharona” rocketed to #1 for six weeks, went gold, and sold 10 million worldwide. "Good Girls Don’t" reached #11

Ice Cream Man: Van Halen

June 9th 2007 19:51
Ice Cream Man was one of my favorite Van Halen songs due to it's naughty subject matter. Back in the day, they were a great live band to watch (through the haze of pot and beer googles.) It was this tour in 1979 that David Lee Roth gave each of the crew members 5 backstage passes, which they were supposed to give to beautiful women. If Roth shacked up with one of the babes, he gave the roadie that got her in $100 the next day.

Walk on the Wild Side

June 5th 2007 00:49
Today was one of those rainy days where I had to be inside for work and not inside in my pjs with a good book. My grandmother would say that "idleness is the devil's playground". So my mind turned to Lou Reed and his hit "Walk on the Wildside." I began that inner reminiscing about times in which I spent time engaging in similiar activities.
