Rachel Bilson Interview

December 22nd 2006 04:24

Rachel: "Mischa who?"

The O.C's Rachel Bilson spills on Mischa Barton's controversial departure from the hit US show...

How have you adapted to Mischa Barton not being around this season?
Who?

Oh she was on the show for a while, played your friend Marissa?

Oh her, I think I have heard of her before. [Laughs]. No it was hard at first, but then it comes down to we are working and trying to make the best show we can, so you can't think about the personal issues of it. (You) try to keep doing your job well and that is all you can really focus on.

You have had a lot of different supporting cast over the years — who else have you missed?
Well Michael Cassidy was so much fun! But now Chris Pratt is on the show and he is so much fun and they are actually really similar to each other. I have been so lucky with the guys I get to work with on the show, it's been a blast.

Are you hearing all the "this is the last season of The O.C." rumours?
I think people say that every season because you never know what's going to happen, but there is not much truth to that that I know of. Hopefully not.

How long can you go on?
Well you sign a seven year contract for a show, and that is just a series regular contract thing.

Given that Mischa met her onscreen demise after three years though, does job security scare you a little?
Right I know! And I hope not. But I think I have a really good relationship with everyone and my character... I don't know. I think it's different for everyone. It wasn't a personal thing with her departure, it was more a creative decision because her character had been through so much and there was not much left for her to do.

Well your character Summer started out as her sidekick but she has certainly risen in the show. What's been the biggest change for her and you over the years?
I don't know, I think they just gave me more to do which is really cool and probably the biggest change. It's just been more and more over the years, and that has been nice and I have been very fortunate.

But she certainly has a lot more substance this new season. Is she different for you to play?
Oh definitely! She was just a guest star when the show started and represented the Newport bitch, so to speak. Now Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke) has taken that on and does a great job, so I get to do a lot of other things too and that has been a lot of fun.

Do you miss that edgy bitchy part?
Well she still gets to do that sometimes and really she gets to do it all I think. But for me it's nicer to do everything.

Your character has become an activist this season. How do you feel personally about environmental issues?
I do support the environment. I recycle — I do! Really I think it's cool especially for the younger audience to see that part of Summer is nice as it raises awareness of the whole environment issue.

Now Adam's character Seth has a few changes this year too — a tattoo?
Right!

And you are not too pleased about that?
It's funny, people always say that when you get a name or a face tattooed on you it's bad luck.

You don't have any?
No!

And not thinking about it?
No not right now.

You didn't have the college experience in real life, did you?
No. I went to junior college for a few months out of high school but I didn't have that experience so for me it's fun to play it because you get to sort of live it vicariously through a character.

A few years ago you said that you couldn't wait to get a script and rush through it to see what was going to happen . Four years later are you still doing that?
Yeah! It's fun and what makes it better is we don't get the scripts 'til right before we shoot, so that also keeps it interesting.

If this is the last year of The O.C., what will you remember most about it?
Oh my gosh! It's been the most amazing experience of my life, and it changed my life, and I will forever be grateful to it.

How does it feel to be a cartoon character in the Atomic County comic on the show?
It's weird, but kind of cool. There is a giant cardboard cut-out of me that I gave to my dad because he is into reading the comic books. That is weird!
