Race Car Game.

February 26th 2007 17:19
As you may know my son Callum is (I'm told like all boys) addicted to cars, anything car related. Now add into this mix that my husband and I quite like to play console games and we are careful in the ones we play when Callum is around, but there are those games that you like to play when he's asleep in bed... one of them being Grand Theft Auto. Don't ask me how but somehow Callum found the game and wanted to play it, hey it had pictures of cars on. So Daz thought what harm can come about from it, all Callum wanted to watch Daddy driving the car around. So Daz took off the blood rating and muted it so he couldn't hear the sound and made it as child safe as he could for him to just drive around safely. So there they are the two of them sitting happily together driving cars around and having fun and Daz is driving safely and our little boy is happy as larry. Daz was even careful enough (or so he thought) not to let Callum see how he "acquired" the car. At some point Daz has to pause the game to go and check on the toast he is doing for their breakfast, the same point in time I wake up from my lie in and go into the front room to see what my boys are up to. What do I see? Callum holding the PS2 controls and beating up a police officer and stealing the car!! Ooopppsss. He had been told to not touch the controls but hey he's a toddler and they never listen to what you tell them to do.

So the game gets very well hidden but we have the next couple of months with Callum asking to play "car game" and pointing to GTA whenever he sees it in a catalogue or a shop and saying "My game. I want to play.". With this in mind we decided to buy him his own child friendly car game, just a cheap second hand one. After looking in a shop we settled on V-Rally 3 and it's a popular choice with Callum, he loves the intro song and now knows the words to it and goes around singing it, bless him. The thing with this game is it's quite hard to play with a three year old sharing the controls with you but we perservered.

Now fast forward a few months and Daz and I are well and truely fed up with the game, it's driving us mad. It's decided and agreed we need a new and better game. On Saturday we did so. What did we buy? Burnout Revenge. Now this game is awesome! It's crashing into other cars at fast speeds what more do you want from a game?!? Yes I think Mummy and Daddy are maybe going to enjoy playing this game more than we should, I've already spent half and hour or so today sitting cuddled up with Callum playing it and he was the one who asked for it to be turned off! Also another bonus is that it has an age 3 rating.

So we have a happy White House now.

great alternative... GTA would be a shocker for a kid..

I love it, though. The freedom and the secrets. Seeing how bad you can get... seeing how long you can keep away from the police.

I've watched friends who let an ugly side of them come out, though. They'll viciously beat up civilians and have this gleeful look on their face.

Hi Sarah

Everybody has it spot on ...

Callum is (I'm told like all boys) addicted to cars, anything car related

My son is just about to turn four and he loves cars too. Thankfully he hasn't been introduced to GTA (yet) but I'm sure that day will come ...

He actually enjoys sitting at the computer with his big sister playing the online games at a site called Squiglys Playhouse, which is full of games for children (just children!). Maybe there is a car racing game there your son might like as well.

Gee Sarah, you should have heard me audibly suck in my breath after reading about him playing GTA!

I'm glad you found a solution to that one!

Hiya Cibbuana.

It's mostly my hubby that is into the GTA games but they can be fun, especially when you're like him and can never remember the way to places. But I'm much happier letting our Monkey Monster play Burnout Revenge. On Vice City (I think that's the one) I love how you can go shopping and choose all the different outfits... I'm such a girl! LOL.

As for children playing these games I've heard so many people say they've allowed their ten year old have the game for themselves, I'm shocked. With us it was just a simple mistake never to be repeated but to actively allow your child to play the game on their own and fully is in my eyes wrong they have and age consent for a reason.

Take Care.

Sarah.

Hiya Andrea.

Thank you for the link. I'll have a look at that and see if I trust Callum near the laptop... last year he thought it would be fun to pull out all of the keys and I spent a couple hours and trying to fix them all back on. Since then he's under strict instructions not to go anywhere near it...

I wonder why boys are so into cars, personally I find them a bit boring but then again that could just be from having to spend hours upon hours upon hours upon days upon weeks (I think you get my drift) lining them up and talking about them all. Daz and I even get woken up at 6am by Callum saying "I want to tell you a story, it's all about cars.". Bless him. LOL.

Take Care.

Sarah.

Hiya MelissaA.

LOL Sorry about that. It was one of those moments though where if you were there you would have seen the funny side of it. He does love the police though, always dressing up as one at playschool and he just adores the Sgt from our local community safety team that we know... even though said Sgt says he's scared of Callum. LOL.

Take Care.

Sarah.
