Quick Energy Saving Tips
July 28th 2010 13:44
After a long hiatus, I've returned to bring some tips on how to save energy with a few changes to your household:
1. Vampire Power, Wall Warts, whatever you wish to call them, devices with chargers are a major source of energy loss in the common household. Don't believe it? Get yourself one of these and take a look. By simply unplugging a charger when not in use, you can make a significant impact.
2. Charge you laptop less. Did you know that you can get more battery life out of your laptop by reducing its work load? An easy way to do this is by adding a tool like a Script Blocker to disable ads and automatic items on the internet. These scripts cause your computer to use computing time and power. If your a FireFox user check out this add-on: NoScript.
3. Thinking about upgrading that 20" tube TV to a new 3D TV? Well, make sure to look for an EnergyStar Compliant one. These appliances can save significant amounts of electricity over others.
4. Don't just put devices on standby, turn them off. This can go a long way in reducing unnecessary power draw.
5. Some appliances, like microwaves, also draw power when not in use. The typical microwave still draws around 3 Watts when idle. If you don't depend on it for a clock (especially with one on the stove and radio) then unplug it and save some juice.
These 5 tips are no where near exhaustive, but they can reduce the amount of electricity drawn by your house every day. It's the little things like these that, when combined over millions of homes, can change the way we think about energy. And, as usual, don't forget that almost all of these tips apply to the workplace as well!
