Queenstown Tasmania and surrounding West Coast Towns

February 12th 2010 06:55
I wrote this blog during winter, and thought with winter coming up I would share the travels of my West Coast adventure.

While winter, and sometimes summer may see some rain and snow on the West Coast, there are some very nice places to view while you are on the West Coast. You can get a bus from Hobart, to Queenstown which takes 4-6 hours to get to the end you stop on the way you go passed Tarraleah, Gretna, Hamilton, and a few other small towns...you stop for a brief period at Ouse which is still a long way from your chosen destination of Queenstown.

I am sure some that live in Tasmania would rather speed to get to Queenstown and get here in "Record time" well that would mean you miss some key parts of the pleasure that is traveling to the West Coast. Tarraleah is a nice place to stop and have lunch (see my photos for the bridge photo.) there you get to see the powerplant of Tarraleah.

Now Hamilton and Gretna are nothing you are going to blink and miss them both practically. The last stop you are going to have to get petrol will be Derwent Bridge, while you are here, I would suggest a coffee, and a bit of a walk around sure there's nothing really to see here and it;s just a little tourist thing you are going to be driving again for at least another hour if not more.

You are going to pass your final patch of water coming up on Queenstown, you have Gormanston and Linda before climbing into Queenstown and coming down the other side. You also have to climb Mout Aerosmith on your way as well, but yeah at the top of the hill when you have entered Queenstown take a long look at the surrounding areas, you get to see the town and the mountains before fully entering the town centre.

Now we are in Queenstown, we need something to do, visiting the now famous Gravel Oval is a must for any football fan, or anyone that likes to see the main attractions of these country towns. You can also view the Wilderness Railway but if you are planning on riding it you will need to save some good money for a trip on it...sure you get to see some nice sights, but the price is not that good.

Now you can see the Vedanta Mine here in Queenstown, they have tours, you can walk around the town, you can also see the bars, and yeah after that what are you going to do? Well you can pick 2 places to go from here you can goto Strahan, which I will write about in a moment, or goto Zeehan, now Zeehan is closer then Strahan, though like Queenstown, it's not big and it is just a mining town.

You can goto Burnie, or some smaller towns like Corina, and such, but let's stick to some other towns shall we? Good.

Zeehan is a 45 miniute drive from Queenstown, there's a look out and there is a place to go hiking, I would suggest if you go hiking you have some good hiking shoes there. So you should be finally in Zeehan after seeing nothing but trees and such, it is a kinda boring trip from here to Zeehan but once in Zeehan you get to see the mining village that has been set up, and you can see the mining stuff...in Zeehan there is some old trains there to look at and if you keep on driving into town...

You can come to a turn off and go towards Trial Harbour, now this one here is a place to camp out, you can drive about 45 more minutes down a winding track and you come to the Arctic Ocean which you can fish and such. So now you have seen another one of the small mining towns of Tasmania.

Now you can drive around a long way to Strahan, or you could go back to Queenstown, rest the night in Queenstown, and then travel 2 hours to Strahan, now Strahan has some nice things along the way to see, once you get there you can enjoy the water, it's very marine friendly with a sea plane, and a lot of fishing trawlers and such.

Much like most of the West Coast, visiting Strahan in summer is a good plan, I went there in Summer and got to enjoy some sun, before coming back to Queenstown and getting rain and such...
