Put a Forum (or two) on your Blog
October 17th 2006 03:15
Forums are here and are a great way to attract more people to your blog and create an active community.
They are still very much in beta but you can add Forums to your blog from my.orble.com. Click on "Create a new Blog" and fill out the form as usual (forums are just a kind of blog) except:
Posting Permissions: You probably want to set this to "Any Registered Orble Member" unless you have a good reason not to.
Publish Posts on Orble Hompage: Set this to "No". We don't want random forum posts appearing on the Orble homepage.
Moderator Verifies Posts Before Publication: It is probably a good idea to set this to "Yes" so you can make sure people do not post inappropriate material to your forums.
Choose a Format for your Blog: Set this to "Forum".
Is This A Blog Forum?: Select "Yes" along with which blog you want the forum to appear on.
Show Forum Summary: Should be set to "No".
New Forums will inherit the Theme of the parent blog to start with, however you can modify them as you wish in the usual way.
Also if you want a Forum Summary to appear at the top of your blog (like with the Cars Blog below) you have to "Modify" your blog and select "Yes" for the "Show Forum Summary" question.
An example of a blog with a couple of forums can be found on the Cars Blog where Charles has set up a couple of forums to act as a marketplace for people to sell their cars.
You can set up a forum on just about any topic related to your blog. Forums which seem to do the best are those which allow people to ask for advice from the community however you are only limited by your imagination.
As always if you find any bugs or have any suggestions on how to improve the forums please get in touch.
Thanks,
Jon.

Are we restricted by how many forums we are allowed to create, because I was thinking of possibly creating one for every team (16), or would this overload the system
Cheers

You can create as many as you like -- there are no limits on the system. But I suggest that people create no more than 20 or 30 for now.
I think having a forum for each team is a great idea.
Also remember that each forum can have any number of categories within it just like a blog.
